I’m still doing stuff in Cyrodiil. I’m trying to save Shivering Isles for last because it was the best looking thing from the original version.

Also, that screenshot of Akatosh and Dagon fighting looks insanely epic

I was debating between Shivering Isles and Mage’s Guild, and ended up going with the Shivering Isles mainly because the beginning of the Mages guild is always something i struggle to get through. I didn’t know much about the Shivering Isles though and was expecting another Knights of the 9 situation, not a whole realm to explore

You don’t have to do everything in an open world game. Just go from main mission to main mission and you’ve pretty much turned it in to a linear game.

endeavor, do gaming w Open World Games: yay or nay?

Yes for good games like stalker with it’s incredible, unmatched alife or arma where the large world serves a purpose or gta and red dead with it’s detail.

No to terrible checklist games where the formula is copy pasted across series and not backed up by good ai or good worlds, only with timewasters and checklists, eg ubisoft.

Personlly ive ended up dropping witcher 3 and elden ring thanks to open worlds but for some reason cyberpunk works for me.

Arma is an interesting example. I’d say that it is only an open world game in some scenarios, and often times is a linear game that happens to have a big map and sandbox.

In any case, I’d agree that it having a large world with many possibilities is important for the gameplay and ability to mod/create content across the maps.

Maestro, do gaming w Open World Games: yay or nay?

Days Gone is well designed and balanced. The map isn't overly large. If you just follow the quests you pretty much go everywhere anyway. I highly recommend you just give it a go. It's a great game!

The Shivering Isles is a ton of fun. I didn’t know what to expect in an Oblivion DLC (I barely played the original game) but I was pleasantly surprised by how weird it is. Like you said, it’s an Alice in Wonderland scenario with bizarre quests and a crazy king. Sheogorath’s voice acting is legendary.

By the way you should repair your armor :P

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

i keep meaning to get the Armor fixed but everytime im in a town i forget. Luckily it’s just the hood i’m wearing that’s broken now, but i really should fix it sooner rather than later

simple,

You can buy repair hammers from the blacksmith to repair equipment on the go. It’s cheaper to buy repair hammers and fix them yourself than let the blacksmith do it, too

I think my armor skill is to low level to repair magic armor and weapons right now. I really need to work on getting it up so i can repair those

AceFuzzLord, do games w Would you like to see a mainline Pokemon game created in the old style?

Ever since the switch to 3D, I knew they would never look back. Biggest reason why fan games are so valuable to me. The only thing I like about the upper half gens (not including 5) are the pokemon (case by case and not including regionals) and the terastal mechanic, in terms of the games and their mechanics. Gens 6-9 I really don’t have almost any care for any of the important characters outside of the designs for characters/character art for characters like Geeta, Diantha, Brasius, Kiawe, and Rika. Those are pretty much the only characters who’s names I could even remember.

That’s mostly due to, in my opinion, when I think they started absolutely dumbing and watering down the story and characters so they could start focusing on nostalgia baiting people to keep them coming back while also completely dumbing down exploration as well. I think two of the only characters from gens 6-9 I really care about were Lysander and Kiawe because I thought Lysander’s genocide plot was interesting enough and Kiawe only because of the episodes of the anime I saw (which is kinda cheating since the anime is where they put every ounce of character into 99.99% of all important NPCs).

Pretty sure a large amount of fans would absolutely love returning to an older form, at least aesthetically, myself included, but good luck convincing Sintendo of anything without getting their corporate legal open secret stasi (lawyers) getting involved.

I didn’t really like the games when they were the new hotness and think the format of Arceus is way, way better.

rumschlumpel, do gaming w Oh, Nazeem... tsk, tsk, tsk.

Most dragon killing in Skyrim wasn’t fun, though, it was annoying and you did it because dragon attacks depopulated villages (i.e. remove interactable NPCs).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Every single time I go to Solitude the first time, that scene where the dude is getting beheaded always gets fucked up because a dragon is always attacking the city and then I spend the rest of the game carrying around every single Talos amulet I accidentally picked up because I can’t finish the quest to release them from Quest Item purgatory since Greta almost always dies. 😬

grue,

Maybe you should try going to Solitude the first time before progressing the main quest enough to trigger the dragon attack.

kooks_only,

Fast travel or take a carriage to somewhere just outside of solitude, the dragon is supposed to attack there. Then go in and the beheading happens.

psx_crab,

From my experience the villager will just run indoor, guards will help with the fighting, and sometimes some chad will draw their 2 handed axe and chasing the flying dragon, and eventually slaying the dragon like it’s tuesday.

Kit, do gaming w Open World Games: yay or nay?

I only like open world games when I can really immerse myself into roleplaying. Oblivion and FFXI (if that counts) were perfect for this style of playing. Most open world games just don’t hit the mark, unfortunately, and I’d rather play a linear game that feels like reading a good book.

monotremata, do games w What is your favorite indie game?

Sticking only to ones I haven’t seen mentioned:

  • Tandis : geometry puzzler
  • Gateways : a 2d portal-style puzzler
  • Elliot Quest : pixel adventure
  • Phoenotopia Awakening : also a pixel adventure, had trouble with the final boss but the rest is great
  • Wuppo : flash-animation-style comedy adventure
  • Alba : sweet game about a girl who loves wildlife
  • Salt and Sanctuary : 2d soulslike
  • Legend of Grimrock : tile-based first person dungeon crawler (“dungeon master” spiritual successor)
  • A Short Hike (really short but amazing exploration game)

Ones I have seen mentioned but can’t bear not to mention:

  • TIS-100 : the finest of the Zachlikes; a programming puzzle game
  • Crosscode : 2d adventure with incredibly fine-tuned combat and puzzles
  • Outer Wilds : fantastic time-loop puzzle
  • FTL : space adventure “one more run!” game
  • Slay the Spire : deck-drafting “one more run!” game
