_Lory98_, (edited ) do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of April 20th

I’ve been playing Under Night In-Birth II. I had bought it last year but never actually played it. After this first week of matches I’d say it’s my favorite in this latest “generation” of figthing games.

I randomly bought Azure Striker Gunvolt on Switch, since I rememberd hearing good things about it when it came out, but it’s not much fun to play. It feels really unpolished, the levels and bosses are a bit on the annoying side and the combat gimmick, where you need to tag enemies with projectiles to be able to damage them, feels really bad to use as it’s slow and unsatisfying.

Everyone playing Blue Prince reminded me of La-Mulana, which I’ve been playing in the last few days. I’m a bit conflicted on it, since I like most of what the game does except for the combat which I find rather bad and unfairly punishing when considering how imprecise it is. I am enjoying the game, although I’m a bit worried it might be too long.

chloyster,

Yeahhh I bounced off la mulana pretty hard. It’s good but I think it’s maybe a little too much for me

_Lory98_,

Understandable, yea.

The puzzle part feels like Outer Wilds, but without the log to help you and it’s also a bit less linear, which I’m personally enjoying but I can see why it could be boring.

The platforming/navigation is a bit janky but usable after a while.

The combat is IMO absolute garbage (the bosses in particular are pretty bad fights that waste your time and the hitboxes are terrible) and wouldn’t be surprised if this is what makes most people quit.

For now at least, the exploration and puzzles overshadow the negatives, but they are pretty big negatives that are hard to ignore.

apotheotic,

I wanted to love La-Mulana a lot. And I do love it for building some of the foundation that some huge greats like Fez and Tunic and Outer Wilds stand upon. But holy shit, the game doesn’t want you to love it. The combat and movement are so punishing in an entirely unfun way. I stopped playing after getting what I understand to be like 70-80% of the way through the content the game has to offer and by the last ~20% of that I was dreading playing.

It is a game I have to thank for making way for the existence of some of my favourite games, but I hate it nonetheless.

I’m glad I got my (second) Anbernic earlier this month.

I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus two years ago and liked it so much I wish I'd bought a more expensive model with analog sticks. I keep looking at all the shiny new stuff on the market and feeling the temptation to upgrade, but holding off because something better is always around the corner.

Well, guess I no longer have to worry about temptation now.

SolarPunker, (edited ) do games w I want a law for PC games to be offered in physical versions again

I’m always pro to retail in arts, people should care more about digitalization into other fields. As a PC gamer I’m starting to collect some used console and blurays, they costs mostly the same as digital but you own something. Also don’t forget the preservation issue.

JakobFel, do games w Does the 2 hour refund limit on Steam affect game design?
@JakobFel@retrolemmy.com avatar

I love Steam but I’ve always felt like the refund policy was a bit of a joke. I feel like the time limit should be flexible, being a bit longer for games that have long tutorials or a bunch of intro cutscenes.

zipzoopaboop,

Alternatively you can have Sonys policy of did you boot it? Yes? Fuck you

Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong, I know it can be worse. I just think it could also be better.

mohab,

I agree. Like, you know what's gonna happen if I'm close to the 2-hour limit and haven't decided yet? I'm gonna refund and move on.

I want the law to allow resales of digital game licenses, and the storage medium shouldn’t matter.

Carry him in a poke ball! You’re just ruining your car that way.

sauce, do games w What's a cancelled game you really miss?

The Cycle: Frontier. It was a pvpve extraction shooter that had such potential. Struggled to keep cheaters at bay, but it felt like they were making progress until one day they announced they were shutting down. Every month or two someone in our group chat brings it up and we’re collectively sad that it’s gone.

Orcs Must Die Unchained. Pretty good game overall, was trying to be a league of legends type of game with 3D TD, it didn’t get a player base going, so they swapped it over to a solo game, the maps were fun as hell and picking through 10+ characters was fun, it was really dynamic and the endless mode was very fun to push. They ended all support, it’s offline. Sucks. OMD 3 came out, it’s not even a quarter the game. Theirs 4 different player characters, they are all humans. All enemies are orcs or other bad guy type of mobs, unchained had human enemies and a few other variations, there’s no where near the number of maps and most maps play in a really predictable way. In Unchained there were maps you needed to build a kill box, sell it, move it, all to get one wave killed, at least on the first few waves, anyway. It almost scratches the itch, but not well. I’m honestly perplexed on why they didn’t just include the characters and maps from unchained.

Anyway. It’s a very ‘‘there are dozens of us!’’ Game. So. I don’t expect much here.

MrScottyTay,

I thought that game came out?

Snowclone,

It was a must have online servers game and they stopped all support, so it’s gone, canceled, over. Idk. That’s the way I think of it at least.

MrScottyTay,

For games and other media that gets “released”. Cancelled is usually the term that gets used if it doesn’t come out.

A film that is no longer in the cinema doesn’t get said it was cancelled for example.

For games that cease to be playable after release they are more often described as being shut down or being sunset. Like I’ve never read about an ongoing game being cancelled unless they were specifically talking about an originally upcoming piece of dlc or content being cancelled.

Snowclone,

Cool.

The Culling

Before the devs ruined it by throwing away the movement and combat system.

Wasn’t canceled but they might as well have because they lost 99% of their playerbase from that one change in Beta.

Technically it was never released, but I was invited to a closed alpha (or beta?) for a game called Chroma, by Harmonix, the OG Guitar Hero people. It was a lot of fun and I’m still sad that it was canceled…
