Sibbo, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?

Still playing Divinity Original Sin 2. The sale will be over by the time I finish.

aStonedSanta,

Enjoy it. If you haven’t tried dos1 yet it’s also great but a bit rougher around the edges.

Gabu,

How good is it? I’m on the fence about buying it, since I’ll probably not play for a while.

Sibbo,

If you like RPGs with difficult round-based combat and lots of story you will probably enjoy it.

Phroon, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

I always assumed that the Boom in Boomer Shooter was more “Gun go Boom”, which seemed to fit the genre quite well.

shea, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

Old=boomer sorry. That’s just the way it turned out, nothing we can do about it. Raging against new slang is just gonna make us more out of touch, and intensify the feeling of being old, so I just accept it and try to keep up. Boomer is old now, not just the Baby Boomers.

Can recommend, but only when you’re subverting expectations. Young student is unloading a bunch of empty beverage crates from the elevator on the ground floor, making you wait, already looking quite self-conscious about it? Bellow, loud but not shouty, “Unbelievable, the students of today”. See them flinch and cower, “oh fuck this again”. Continue, with flawless timing, “why isn’t that beer?”.

Aasikki,

I’m 26 and I’ve already been called a boomer by younger people. I don’t really see the problem as to me it’s just funny and reminds me to try my best not to eventually become a boomer that hates everything that isn’t how it used to be.

lolcatnip,

Ok.

Katana314, do games w Can we talk about FF7 - Rebirth?

I’ll admit, it’s probably not disingenuous to the original for it to be crammed with minigames, whether or not they changed it up with new ones. When the original was one game, leaving Midgar was very much a moment of freedom they wanted to capitalize on, so it was the perfect checkpoint to start giving the player optional activities.

That said, the “Towers” subject in particular (what I believe prompted the “Ubisoft style” comment) is something I feel like gamers need to cool down on. As much as people habitually throw shade on Ubisoft for starting them, they make sense, and can be done in an interesting way. If you have an open world environment, you want players to rely on the ugly minimap as little as possible; that often means both a focus on vertical movement that allows you chances to see the space in front of you, as well as tall buildings that encourage distant exploration. I really think towers get unfair criticism, even if a few games have done them in less fun ways (I could be biased - I think even in their initial appearances in Far Cry 3, they were actually fun to climb)

relic_,

Yeah your understanding about the towers is correct. I don’t think it’s inherently bad, I’ve even enjoyed it in some of the AC games, but in rebirth it just feels like a bad chore list. Some of the combat challenges can be interesting but the ones with the summon stones (I forget the name, but they reduce the power of summon fights and do other things) and scanning the life springs are just terrible imo.

Nibodhika, do games w What are some good games with *zero* replayability?
  • Spec ops: The line. I think this was delisted from most stores though, so you might need to sail the high seas to get it. It might not be as impactful today as it was when it came out, but it’s a great game with a great twist.
  • Life is strange. It’s a story driven game, sure you can replay it and choose different things, but realistically you probably won’t since the main of the story is the same.
  • Batman games. Those were my go to for a while when I wanted something linear with an end.
deranger,

I patient gamered Spec Ops and beat it a couple weeks ago. I found it to be rather mediocre. The combat sucks ass and the graphics don’t help.

Couple cool sequences but I felt it was massively overhyped.

Silentiea,

I think it kinda falls into the same sort of category as citizen Kane. Important for what it did when it did it, but not really good by modern standards.

deranger,

If I played this in 2012 at release I think I’d feel just the same. What do you find is important about this game? I’m curious as I see it mentioned all over the place, but I really don’t see what’s the big deal. Releasing a game where you shoot US soldiers, in the middle of hyper patriotism in the US, seems edgy for the time but that’s about it. The moral choices were few and only had impact in terms of a bit of flavor. No serious consequences.

I did enjoy the music and especially like the detail of the characters getting progressively dirtier as the game went on.

Silentiea,

I haven’t played it, I’ve only experienced it through essays. I think it’s because it took a look at war and such from a pretty different perspective than other shooters had before, and examined the messier psychological aspects of it in a way that incorporated traditional shooter gameplay as hadn’t been done before?

BrianTheeBiscuiteer,

Focusing on the gameplay really misses the point. It was practically an interactive story, but they wanted it to be a shooter so you’d feel more responsible for the outcome rather than just watching things unfold. And while the “choices” in game made little difference, that pretty much reinforced the message that some situations are basically fukt and “pushing forward” doesn’t make it any better.

deranger,

Gameplay is 90% of time spent in the game, which is why it colored my experience so much. Regardless; what do you feel the game does well? Specific examples, please.

I read a ton of positive comments before playing it, and avoided spoilers for years. Turns out there’s much to spoil, IMO. There’s the white phosphorus scene, but you can’t even choose to not do that. It was very disappointing when I sat there and it railroaded me into using WP when my squad mate was telling me not to. I don’t feel it was a pioneer in any way, and feels quite dated even against games many years it’s senior. Bioshock came out five years earlier and has deeper social commentary, more engaging gameplay, and much better graphics.

If you have specific examples I’d love to hear them. It’s entirely possible I’m just not getting it, but I feel this game seemed epic for some console gaming teenagers in 2012 and it’s mostly nostalgia. I don’t feel the game did anything that special.

Spoilers

:::

spoilerMy interpretation and granted it is probably a bit shaking as I havent played in a long time is: I personally found spec ops interesting into the slow descent into darkness, how your team is professional in the beginning and over time they become savage, to the point of blood thristiness, their animations changes, their speech, mannerisms and their models get gradually worn down. You do actions but over time you think wait - am I really doing the right thing, like if you decide to help the cia guy, you find out you’ve been played and just destroyed the water supply for a whole area that is in desparate need of it, this come back to haunt you later on when an angry mob catches up to one of your team. I still remember feeling vindictive of hearing my teammate scream in panic and fear as I was rushing to get to him Then to get there and see him murdered and and an angry mob looking for blood, my first reaction was vengeance not orderly dispersal… The character and the remaining team mate gunned down civilians mercilessly because I felt outrage at them killing one of my own… and the crowd had just cause to be pissed as your rag tag band of misfits have been blowing up commiting warcrimes after to warcrimes justifiying it to some “greater cause” As you play the game even the loading screen are questioning you if you are enjoying yourself and nothing is stopping you from continuing to play. It is quite in your face to say that what you are doing is wrong, but if you keep playing and by finishing the game you are justifying the main characters actions, you are complicit in the acts of violence as you the player are determined to see the game to the end just as he is Their original mission was to just scout… and it somehow turned into this Dubai tour de violence because the main character believes that there was a radio call from someone he idolised If I recall there is that scene at the end that shows all the bullshit, the hanged men, the voice on the radio your character thinks they see and hear is in their head - they have severe ptsd, and have “main character hero syndrome” and none of the game would have happened if they just followed orders

:::

deranger,

You’ve got a solid recollection of the events. I think my expectations were set too high from what I read online. It was decent, but I was expecting S tier.

I did really enjoy how “degraded” the characters got as they went through everything like you mention. Very nice little touch.

spoilerIt was watching like a train wreck in slow motion, I ended up just going along for the ride to see how far this rabbit hole would go I really tried to be trigger disciplined in the beginning only firing after the point of a negotiation seemed impossible and before I knew it I caught up in this zoned out mentality - no decision is right, all that matter is the mission, just trying to survive and just devolved into killing on sight and in scenes that feel like it is out of some fever dream - still remember that “lights out” section as someone in some sort animalistic fight or flight zone blinking and someone just appears in front of you I guess it stuck with me how the main character kept making excuses and blaming someone else for all the problems and by the end of it and you see that scene with the chair looking out at Dubai and see that “I caused this” and with that call backs to the the choices and saw how it all was just some “cope” it kind of stuck with me

Microtransactions annoy me, sure. But the season pass, live service, bullshit stuff pisses me off more. It’s just a step towards what I hate about apps on my phone these days. There are so many apps that require a subscription but have no recurring fees or content updates. I’m talking calendar apps, or apps for taking notes, etc.

Ubisoft guy recently implied he wants to take things this direction but it’s not that far off with their games already.

Drummyralf, do games w What games do you recommend for my girlfriend?

Games that I played with my wife that wr thoroughly enjoyed

--------COOP-------- -Unravel two. Great cute platformer where it doesn’t matter if one player isn’t that great at platformers. A mpving stoey with beautiful graphics and fun coop.

It Takes TwoA platforming game with a great story. Good feels all around

-Stardew ValleyMany people already suggested this. It’s amazing. Super addictive, great coop, but can be played singleplayer as well if you’re not around

- Trine seriesAnother great platformer series. Difficulty can easily be adjusted (by allowing lifting boxes with people on it with wizard). And can also be played solo.

Escape SimulatorGreat escape room game with many small escaperooms that take about 10 to 15 minutes each to solve. Solo and coop.

-OvercookedGreat hectic coop game. I find this game quite hectic and exhausting to play for a long time, but my wife couldn’t get enough of it. Even when she was tired. Best to play coop, can be played solo.

-------SINGLEPLAYER------- My wife enjoyed management style games a lot, where you had no time pressure of any sorts.

- Strange HorticulturePuzzle game where you try to find the right plants by deductions. No time pressure, very relaxing. Only single player, although you could play it together.

Planet ZooProbably the best zoo management game out there. Wife was addicted to it for months

Planet CoasterSame as above, but with theme parks

**Cities Skylines (first one)**Great city planner

Hope this helps!

simple, do games w Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Review Thread

Despite the high scores across the board, it seems about as split as FF7 Remake. A lot of people love the game but aren’t a fan of how they changed the story, and here we see the same pattern.

neatchee,

As I said with the first one: I already have ff7. I don’t need ff7 again. If I want ff7 I’ll go play ff7. I’m incredibly happy they decided to spice things up and give it a twist. This has me even more excited for next week!

Wugger,

As I said in 2002: this story is awesome. But they have cubes for hands. We have the ps2 now. I hope I can play this game again someday without cubes for hands. This is not that game.

Still only cubes for hands.

neatchee,

Nope, it’s not that game. Nor, IMO, could they possibly make that game successful enough to justify the cost of the remake. There aren’t enough people like you to generate the sales numbers they are looking for. Could you make a reasonably successful product like that? Sure. Would it make the amount of money square-enix is interested in? I strongly doubt it. Because I wouldn’t buy that game and I enjoyed ff7. I don’t really care if they have cubes for hands. I’m not playing it for the graphics heh

Chet_Awesomelad,
@Chet_Awesomelad@kbin.social avatar

Wrong. FF7 was the second-best selling PSX game of all time, and is also the best-selling single-player Final Fantasy game. If you consider that remaking FF7 means getting the original fans PLUS introducing it to an entire generation of gamers who never played it on PSX then you would definitely expect it to sell.

If they didn't think a remake would sell then why did they literally call it "FF7 Remake" and not something else?

neatchee,

You’re missing my point. An exact remake, scene for scene, wouldn’t be successful. You don’t have to believe me 🤗

Wugger,

That’s just not true at all. Literally one of the most famous games ever made remade with modern graphics couldn’t be successful? When squenix announced a remake, and the internet exploded, that is exactly the game everyone expected it to be. Even at launch day we still thought the story would be mostly unchanged.

I’m not arguing in favor of keeping turn based combat.

How exactly would keeping the original story have made a remake less successful? New players would have played it either way, and I find it very hard to believe that the number of fans of the original who would have avoided the game due it being “the same game” outnumber the number of fans who were sold a remake and didn’t find out until half way through that this was a different game.

rambaroo,

If you’re willing to put some effort you can get the original on PC and mod it. It looks much better with mods. The mods are pretty easy to install and it won’t cost you $180 over however many years to get the full story

rambaroo,

… But it is FF7. It’s not a new game.

If you really didn’t want to play FF7 again you’d play literally any other game

neatchee,

And I like that it’s just different enough to leave me wondering if what comes next will be different than what I expected. I think that’s awesome. And I really like the changes they’ve made so far, in terms of how it will obviously impact the future

EvilBit, do games w What adventure games do you recommend?

The Longest Journey. It’s my favorite point and click of all time. Epic, beautiful, and fun. A couple of Babel fish-level puzzles, but otherwise a steady and engaging story with a very likable lead. The much-delayed sequel, Dreamfall, tried some things and mostly failed, but was still a pretty interesting story extension. I haven’t played the last episodic entry, Dreamfall chapters, because I’m slowly working my way through the first two again first.

daniyeg,
