Yoshi P (FFXIV): “Yeah, the game was a huge cultural hit that grew more successful with each expansion, so I thought to myself… now that we’ve brought in millions upon millions of players, why not nerf all of the overworld content into absurdity to bring in maybe forty or fifty noobs? So I did. And then I changed all of the classes again once everyone had reached max level. Nobody liked that. So I thought… why not do it again?”
Zenimax (ESO): “So I just kind of made up whatever and then dialed the difficulty down to about a tenth of what it used to be. Now overworld content is on par with swinging an aluminum bat through a pile of packing peanuts. Also, the Second Era was filled with superhero sky ninjas with lava wings who rode around Tamriel upon lightning horses and mechanical spiders. Deal with it.”
This isn’t quite in line with your question but it’s adjacently meta:
the first time you fall to your death in Bastion the (amazing) narrator says “…and then he fell to his death. … Ahh, I’m just foolin’.” and then you respawn on the platform because videogame.
For some reason there is a disproportionate love for the tutorial world on Xbox 360. I guess a lot of the current generation of players got their start there.
I’m old. I started playing in alpha. We didn’t even have a food bar.
Yah I felt low key attacked when they said that the “old villager” model was nostalgic. I played before villagers even existed, when we did crazy redstone stuff with very basic things.
The tutorial world was always super cool to me growing up. The big floating minecraft sign, the large structures they make for showing the basics, and all the hidden locations around the map. As a kid I thought that was the only way to collect all the discs was to find them hidden in the tutorial world. There was a lot of magic in those worlds, I miss them
I don’t know what it was, but Life Is Strange singlehandedly changed my trajectory in life. So many things opened up inside me I didn’t know about myself and my attitude towards others shifted. I took real stock of myself and my future and what I wanted out of life, and what that might cost me.
Nothing has ever hit me harder than Disco Elysium, and I don’t think anything else ever will. Everything from its themes of failure and depression and addiction and clinging to the past to its surprising message of hope in the face of unrelenting nihilism resonated with me on a molecular level. And the Final Dream is just the single most impactful, emotional and heart-rending moment I’ve had in any game ever. The culmination of the entire game distilled into one scene, and even the whole pathos of that one scene concentrated into three closing words:
The second game of the reboot trilogy starts with Lara in therapy session about how she became a thrill addict from her survivor’s guilt from the first game and how she’s liking it.
I’m looking up the opening scene for Rise of the Tomb Raider and I can’t find the therapy session itself. Maybe it was only in the trailer and they cut it from the game, I remember people thought it was weird when they released that trailer because it was unexpected at the time that this was the direction they were taking? But the game does have you find tapes of Lara’s recorded sessions talking with the therapist, like how she’s having control issues and it turns out she has become a different person in a bad way.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed still holds up as, in my opinion, the best kart-racing game out there, for sure beating out all of the Mario Karts. Got high hopes for Sonic Racing Crossworlds.
Similarly, very much looking forward to Palfarm, assuming it’s real (which it seems to be). Fuck Nintendo.
GTA VI I feel is going to stretch about 4 generations of gaming before ever seeing VII.
GTA V has started in the PS3/360 era, went through the PS4/One era, is sitting in the PS5/X era and we're now about 2-3 years away from the next gen of gaming to happen.
Also it is hard for me to believe we got both GTA IV and GTA V in the same generation.
There’s possibility that GTA VII will come faster. Rockstar does waves on new engine versions. GTA I + II, engine switch, GTA III, VC, SA, engine switch, GTA IV, GTA V, possibly engine switch?, GTA VI, GTA VII? Or some offspin?
Cheaper/better value than anything else on the market
excellent customer support
trackpads for games that need them
OLED available
configurable rear buttons
no other handheld competes on power efficiency or battery life
All repair components readily available.
Runner up would be Legion Go. If you want the SteamOS experience you can easily install it on any other handheld (although I would recommend Bazzite or similar instead). Other handhelds will deliver better performance at the expense of battery life.
Cheaper/better value than anything else on the market
I just want to make this a point. As the hardware is not only cheaper, the games are too. Especially because of the sales, and the option to use other storefronts (through heroic) like epic to get free games every week or two.
Nice dude! If you didn’t complete Elden Ring yet and struggled with it as a first souls game I would highly recommend you check out “Lies of P” next. It’s quite similar to bloodborne and also introduces a lot of the advanced souls mechanics in a beginner friendly manner with lots of good quality of life changes from the classic souls games without diluting the core experience.
Yeah the difficulty and Elden Ring in general suffer a lot because of the open world. Lies of P is more like a classic souls game but with a lot of quality of life upgrades and multiple difficulty modes for beginners.
Yeah the DLC for Elden Ring definitely kicked it up a notch. The base game definitely was easy if you’ve been playing souls games, I still found it pretty fun though
Mandatory launchers can fuck right off. I was lucky enough to get Rockstar support to accept my Steam purchases but even then I had to try twice because the first time they pretty much blew me off.
I also had a similar issue with Ubisoft. There it was actually easier to restore my old email than get Ubisoft support to cooperate.
In short, fuck forced launchers and anyone who says "it's just another account". Yeah, it is at the moment but who knows 10 years from now. You'll be locked out of your games because some fuckery happens and support won't do shit.
You know what I meant. If I buy a game on one launcher it shouldn't open another launcher that then launches the game. The other launcher is completely unnecessary but it is mandatory to launch the game, hence mandatory launcher.
Edit: just to make it clear, if I make another account on another store that IMO is fine. I don't have a problem with having steam, gog and itch accounts. But when I buy a game on one storefront/launcher and then I have to make an account on another storefront/launcher to play the game I already bought, that's bullshit. In OPs case he was forced to make an account for a game he bought elsewhere and is now being punished because the company is stupid.
Think It’s the complaint is where a launcher is required on top of a launcher. Like if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 from Steam, GOG, or Epic it doesn’t required another launcher on top of the launcher you bought it from.
Good thing is that it does seem like majority of games don’t do that. Even EA is moving away from it.
And I’m talking about launcher the type you have to log in again.
Example being Ubisoft games where you get it from Steam or Epic and then have to install UPlay and then log into UPlay.
I’ll even use Finals as an example which isn’t DRM free. You install on Steam and go on playing with no additional login into a secondary launcher. Or you install from Gamepass with no additional login for a secondary launcher.
I mostly play open world games like just cause 2, GTA VC, and total overdose. I have also tried bully in past. Moreover i have played NFS MW, and moto gp2
There are only a few reasons I can surmise that this would be the case:
CRTs don’t add any input lag
There’s no extra latency from being connected to the internet
There’s no latency from bluetooth/wireless on the controller
Because most older games are extremely badly optimised by today’s standards. The original Metroid slows to an absolute crawl when there’s more than about 4 sprites on the screen; the dragon boss in Mega Man (2, I think) was such a laggy, slippery mess that I gave up trying to beat the game; Ocarina of Time runs at 20FPS (worse if you’re in a PAL territory like I am), and that’s one of the better playing N64 games.
I think you’re either noticing one of these extra sources of delay, or you’re blinded by nostalgia.
Unless it’s an HD one, there’s no input buffer so it’s impossible for a CRT to have more than a frame of input lag. And the console needs a frame to notice your input anyway.
You measure lag by taking the capture of a frame an input happens when it is halfway down the screen. Therefore, CRTs have input lag of half their refresh rate. For NTSC, that’s about 8ms. For PAL, 10ms.
Incidentally, a modern gaming LCD has a 2ms average pixel response time. Which is about the same as the difference between NTSC and PAL.
