I really like some of the Halo games for this, especially any levels that don’t involve The Flood. The inventive hit-boxes, slow movements, the vehicles that are fun to just drive around, and the addition of gameplay modifiers, they’re pretty cathartic for me.

Zahille7,

Hell you could even jump into a custom Firefight mode if you just want to kill waves of enemies.

I love playing reach in God mode with infinite abilities just mowing down enemies. Just remember to turn on Grunt Birthday Party.

Horizon Zero Dawn, Planet of Lana

ninjaphysics,

When you get around to HZD, the DLC Frozen Wilds and Horizon: Forbidden West are highly recommended. I’m halfway through the second and it’s so amazing.

Get it on GOG, to avoid things like the recent shenanigans.

payday 2 was kind of a cosy game where me and my friend would do heists whilst making tea and fetching snacks.

shadow raid? More like food raid 😊

What about Extraneum? It’s cute as a button and very chill with plenty of things to shoot. It feels a bit like a modern wolfenstein since there aren’t any stairs. Gunplay feels nice and the secrets are rewarding. Plus between levels there are funny data discs to read.

The Witcher 3

DdCno1,

Gotta finally make it through The Witcher 1 first and then play The Witcher 2. The first game in the series is so rough around the edges (even after many patches) that this is easier said than done. I hate jumping into the middle of a game series due to the fear of missing out on references and character backstories, which is why I’m torturing myself like this.

TehPers,

Fortunately, if you need character backstories and such, you could instead read the books or watch the TV series instead. I jumped straight into Witcher 3 and had no issues with missing background knowledge.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t play 1 or 2 though, just that there are other options.

teawrecks,

I highly recommend skipping straight to witcher 3 unless you really love the series and want to consume everything it has. Still, 3 + the dlc has a lot.

TBH my favorite part of W3 was all the side quests. The writing and dialogue are intriguing and give you more of a flavor for the dark fantasy of the world.

Baldur’s Gate 2

Sadly I just can’t read so much at the moment.

TwiddleTwaddle,

Dark souls remastered for me. I’m just about done with my 2nd DS3 run

Main backlog I actually want to play currently:

If you can’t tell from Isles of Adalar and Monomyth, any game that looks like a Morrowind knock-off is a high priority for me. :P

In reality though, I’ll just play more Avorion and Starsector.

Glide,

Do yourself a favor and stop putting off Cassette Beasts. Every time I play it, I am gobstruck that an indie team made this and sells it for a fraction of the price of whatever mediocrity Pokemon is pumping out.

I could sing it’s praises all day, but I’d rather just politely nudge you to push it up the list.

Splatoon singleplayer maybe? Side Order is built for casually grinding out runs.

“what remains of edith finch” and “gone home.” waiting for the right rainy day to play them.

FeelzGoodMan420,

Both are great. What remains of edith finch is a really interesting and emotional one. It’s beautiful the way they tell the story. Definitely a tear-jerker.

Oooh tough question. Maybe Bioshock Infinite? I only ever played the first one but picked up the full bundle on sale on GOG last year. I have to get through 2 first which has put me off a bit since it’s a big time commitment.

Animal well and wingspan. I think there are others too, despite trying hard to keep stuff in my wishlist instead of backlog.

Mostly my backlog comes from starting a game and then getting distracted by something else.

INCISION and ULTRAKILL

dh34d,

Adding to this,

DUSK

Amid Evil

Turbo Overkill

Selaco

Zortch

There’s no shortage of great boomer shooters these days, and I think they check the “brain off, cozy shooter” criteria.

sag,

Yep, Zortch is so good

Zahille7,

If you’re recommending Incision, might as well recommend Selaco and Hedon: Bloodrite; maybe throw in some Supplice for good measure.

sag,

Yep, I have played most of Boomer Shooter. Including these one. But, I repeatedly play INCISION and ULTRAKILL. I love that Gore Graphics.

Give GUN JAM a try. It’s a rhythm shooting game, the stakes are as high or as low as you want them. There’s only a minimal story and you just focus on the music, aiming and staying on the beat. Can be a lot of flow state fun.

Remnant 2. Gotta finish Cyberpunk 2077 (again) first though. The damn DLC adding extra achievements has thrown everything off!

sylveon, do gaming w Which unplayed game in your library are you most looking forward to playing eventually?

My backlog and my library are huge so I’ll choose a few (in no particular order):

  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood
  • Inscryption
  • Hades
  • Hollow Knight
  • Outer Wilds DLC (I’ve been putting it off because it’s supposedly scary)
  • Stray
  • Little Kitty, Big City
  • Monster Train
  • Moonstone Island
FeelzGoodMan420,

Stray was really good.

teawrecks,

It’s worth noting that the “scary” parts of the Outer Wilds DLC (are very mild, and) are not mandatory. That is to say, for the most part, if you find solving a part of the game too stressful, try approaching it differently.

I loved the base game and DLC. Should be the top of any backlog IMO.

sylveon,

I guess the level of scariness is subjective, at least from what I’ve read not everyone seems to agree that it’s very mild :P But I’ll definitely play it eventually, the base game is one of the best games I’ve ever played.
