I prefer Dpad for platforming and top down as being able to move precisely diagonal is more important than speed control, plus the analogue stick wears out quicker and dpad allows switching directions faster. Analogue for driving and therpy gamess

It’s all about timing, just like face buttons. Platforming or fighting games, you gotta have that instant response. Aiming or acceleration needs the precision of analog. So, “depends on the game” is my hot take…

I realised all these years later that so many games from my childhood had the issue of “floaty characters”.

Mario 64 felt so good because you could run at full speed, snap the alalog stick back and jump, and Mario would pivot on a bees dick and launch himself at your face.

Depends on the game really. If there is a need for fine precision be it movement, pointing or aiming an analog Stick can’t be beat (the latter even enhanced by gyro) if its a 2D game its gotta be a dpad.

Hi, I’m Dito, I made the game!

Check out ΔV: Rings of Saturn! It’s a slower-paced simulation game, and it goes all the way to explore the idea of 2D spaceships with Newtonian physics in an asteroid field (or rather a ring system).

I also recommend Heat Signature, it’s one of my favorite games! It’s only partially about flying spaceships, but I was directly inspired by the pod controls in it.

Edit: I’ll also add Flywrench to this, it’s a tough and satisfying action game about maneuvering through multi-colored obstacles that you can phase through by switching your ship’s polarity in time.

Load levels in chunks, preload the first chunk of the next level before the player reaches the end of the previous one, and either have a smooth transition, or at most put a skippable cutscene.

Loading screens are for poorly developed games.

Portable: my black Gameboy Advance SP, playing my original Gameboy games on it (Donkey Kong Country and pokemon Blue)

TV: this is gonna sound weird, but I absolutely love my PS5, it’s just so sleek and I love the controller haptics and finally having most games running at 60 fps. Again I mostly play older games on it, but a lot of them got PS5 updates like Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, Spider Man, Days Gone…

What you call rigamarole is the standard way to map button presses to tge screen. It only looks like rigamarole to a PC user who is coming to gripa with how a controller interfaces with a screen. A third party mapping utility is STANDARD use case because you’re mapping button presses to the screen. That’s litterally how it works and it works well. When we mobile game players play games THIS is how we play and this IS THE reason why what you call “mobile games” TsumTsum candy crush etc are losing popularity because people be playing more intense games on mobile these days. Because of controller support.

That’s what we do. Xbox controller comes with a clip on. This is mobile gaming. Been this way for about 5 years now. Popularized by pubg at first but then more of this controller style games came along and the button mapper apps got a lot better. Right now the best are Octopus and Mantis. I prefer mantis.

I’m against censorship. Sucks not being able to see what the developers created first hand you know. First thoughts that come to my mind is its because of corporate, political or religious reasons. Really could give a crap about someone wanting to see boobies move as they battle monsters 😂 I just see it as you see an ad and when you get the product it’s nothing like you envisioned. Stuff like that isn’t new and folks will learn to focus on these examples and decide in the future to support or object such business practices.

There’s such thing as consumer-driven censorship.

Let’s say that I’m a game developer, and also a terrible person. After beating my game, it shows a victory screen that says “You know, Hitler might have been right!” Everyone will shit on the game; and that’s just normal player reaction.

Now, it’s easy to predict that no one would be so negative towards giant exposed breasts - except yes, plenty of people are. For all the porn-obsessed pervs out there, tons of people just want to enjoy an action adventure game without cringing distractions.

Don’t believe me? Look at Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The game lost a bunch of its potential sales to players that might enjoy a sweeping JRPG, but couldn’t stand frequent boob/butt shots of its overendowed and subservient female main character.

Is this really something you waste time thinking about, whether or not the devs waste their frame budget on boob jiggle physics?

Seriously, there’s so much to optimize in a game to get good performance, jiggling boons is way down on the list of things to worry about.

I think it depends on the developer. They might lump it in with other realism things like hair physics.

I think what OP is talking about is things being removed. It doesn’t have much to do with optimising the game.

It does if you’re using physics to simulate it. Sure, if it’s just part of an animation you’re not losing anything by having it. But if you’re calculating the physics in real-time, it’s costly. They do it for hair, clothes, and apparently boobs now.

I get that. I’m saying showing less thigh doesn’t make the game run faster and developers might not view something like that as a waste.

It was the NDS (and 3DS), Now It’s the switch (hopefully a successor is on the way…)

I like all consoles in general and have had most modern ones up til Xbox One S and PS4.

Only own a PC and Switch now.

I like the portable form factor, I don’t feel the need for a Deck as I can play everything I want on my current devices.

NDS is definitely first, but Steam Deck is close. These days I’m probably more on my Steam Deck tho.
