I take a lot of breaks. Just a few minutes doing something else.

What game do you really want to play, but haven't yet because you feel it in your soul that it will get a remake/remaster soon enough?

For me it’s Super Metroid. I have played Zero Mission, Fusion, Metroid: Samus Returns (3ds) and Metroid prime remaster, three of these games are remake/remaster. So you can see why I’m hesitant to start Super Metroid, I’m sure that game still holds up, but playing it with modern controls annd other bells and whistles would...

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

I would never hold off on playing a game for a remake/remaster.

I love my oldies.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

Was Stalker supposed to be like Far Cry?

Am I missing something?

Faydaikin,

Ahh, that headline title could have been more clearly written then.

Make your complaints heard about bad games, says Dragon Age veteran Mark Darrah, but "your $70 doesn't buy you cruelty" (www.rockpapershotgun.com)

Answering GDC’s 2023 survey, 78% of respondents said they considered the harassment and toxicity developers receive from the public to be a serious issue. A simple sentiment is often the most effective, and the title of Dragon Age veteran Mark Darrah’s latest video cuts right to the heart of it: “Your $70 doesn’t buy you...

I have no personal vendetta against any of these individual Devs.

My stake in this is slightly different. Like, when I heard about how Blizzard treated it’s own staff and then the whole sexual harassment thing popped up, I was done with them. From that point on, that company didn’t deserve to exist and I blacklisted them. So i try to keep up with gaming related news.

More studios have joined that list since, for various reasons, and I find myself mostly playing indie titles from small upcoming developers now. I feel better about that.

I do believe we should be(e) kind. But I also believe kindness is a two way street.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

The cost of developing games hasn’t skyrocketed. Developers have more means than ever. Many things that was handcrafted on crappy slow computers then are auto-generated in seconds now.

There’s no massive shipping costs or printing of physical mediums anymore. And no losses if the already printed cassettes or CD’s didn’t sell.

If a game costs hundreds of millions to develop, in this day and age, it’s by design and/or because of bloated companies.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

I see how it’s different. And I’m not making excuses for anyone.

If anything, I’m saying I can understand where it’s coming from. But that doesn’t mean I’m onboard with it all.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

They’ll still make the Xbox consoles as long as they are selling. They’ll hopefully just ease off the “Exclusives” going forward.

It was a shitty way of trying to move consoles anyway.

Although they are late to the party, Sony is also trying to sell on PC and other storefronts. So my guess is that the console market isn’t treating either of them super well atm.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

It’s been a while, but yeah. I do believe they have a couple of projects in the works.

Whether or not they’ll amount to anything is anyones guess.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

I do believe Valve also counts as Indie. They are privately owned and self-publish.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

A quick internet search would suggest that no, you can exchange them, but not dismiss them entirely.

The game seems pretty hard-coded in regards to how they want you to play it.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

Time to build the new giants.

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

And there’s some really good stuff out there in the Indy scene

Faydaikin,
@Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

I’m talking about buying from small indie studios.

Every giant we have now all started as a small studio, doing their thing.

All we have to do, is shop around and make sure that whatever we buy isn’t affiliated with a big publisher.

    Zelda like? You’ll have to specify a bit. What installment are we talking about?

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    That would be fun

    The Two Genders (beehaw.org)

    [alt text: Text which says, “The 2 genders according to chuds”. Below the text is two images. On the left is an image of Geralt from The Witcher 3, and he is labeled, “Male, parentheses (white)”. On the right is an image of Ciri from The Witcher 4 trailer, and she is labeled, “Political”.]

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    To fair, the “peach fuzz” was a superfluous addition.

    As much as I enjoyed Horizon, it was very much a ‘one and done’ game for me. I would have liked more emphasis on replayability than skin textures and raytracing.

    But that’s just me. I’m old-school.

    Faydaikin, (edited )
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I don’t know about Elden Ring. Never got into the Souls games.

    But yeah, quest markers in open world games is lazy.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Ofcause it does. What part of a game that gets attention is a choice.

    From visuals to gameplay to sound design and so on. Everything has a priority.

    And with priority comes allocation of resources.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Yes, but it’s by choice. Big companies aren’t trying to impress nerds. Their demographic is everyone that is easily fascinated by “shiny” things.

    The hardware it was made for also prioritized resolution over frames per second. So hyper realism became a focal point of many of the AAA games created. And hyper realism is a one-way street (aesthetically speaking).

    It culminates in Hellblade. With ridiculously stunning visuals, but little else going for it.

    At what point would you say that a game isn’t a game anymore, but closer to an interactive movie?

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    The key words here being “I bet…”

    OP is just raging at no one in particular.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    So you’re gonna go of the word of IGN, Pcgamer and the like?

    Because I’m pretty sure they are gonna praise it to high heaven even if it sucks.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Well, your taste is your own.

    I’ve been burned by the bigger media companies before. But I seldomly buy anything at launch, anyway.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Avowed is an established world, while The Outer Worlds was a new IP.

    Vastly different scopes.

    I expect TOW2 is going to be bigger in scale and depth.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    The bar is pretty low, we’re talking Bethesda.

    That being said, I have yet to hear anything negative about F: London.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Didn’t Beth’ update F4 just before F:London dropped, redering the Mod partly incompatible?

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I don’t know. A bunch of the early user reviews complain about severe crashing issues.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I think the general consesus is that Origins is the way to go with Dragon Age. You’re also more likely to see it go on sale soon now that Vailguard is out.

    Are you a patient gamer? (kbin.melroy.org)

    There's no magazine on any instance that I see of such a community on the topic matter. To anyone not familiar, a patient gamer is someone who is immune to FOMO, doesn't get caught up or tied up with current modern gaming. Someone who doesn't care that they've beaten a game from 1996 and here it is 2024. Someone who doesn't care...

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    BG3 is self-published by Larian. Which sadly means you’re unlikely to see a 50% discount or above.

    Well, at least not anytime in the near future.

    It was 10% off at one point. So maybe 20% isn’t out of the question.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I’d say I’m fairly patient. It does depend on the title and how it’s handled.

    If I heard Tim Cain & Leonard Boyarsky was spearheading a new Fallout, I’d be hard pressed not to buy on release.

    If, however, the game is exclusive in anyway, timed or otherwise, it’s instantly blacklisted and I refuse to buy it at all. (I have an array of chips on my shoulders, I know)

    But other than that specific scenario, I can wait for a good sale, no problem.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Not at all. And more power to you for that.

    I’m just saying it’s gonna be a while yet. 😉

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I don’t know what your point is, but yes, BG3 is still a recent game.

    Therefor it’s unlikely we’ll see a higher discount anytime soon.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Which is an anomaly, not a rule.

    But yes, we got lucky with The Witcher.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Meh, of all the games… BG3 shouldn’t make you feel bad for buying. It’s one of the few games in recent memory that is worth the money in full, imo.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    It’s actually 20% off right now and until the 11/11-24.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I’m sad to say that looking at the teaser, it looks like the bloody Sea Truck will be making a return. :(

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    That would be the big question. We haven’t seen hide nor hair of any other vehicles.

    The scary part I’d say, that the Sea Truck was supposed to replace both Seamoth and Cyclops. So there being a SeaTruck in the promo material makes me a bit anxious.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Addendum: It’s called “The Tadpole” and is likely a modular device akin to the seatruck and is theorized to be able to switch between different modules and basically lock into being a Prawn Suit, Seatruck or Cockpit in a bigger Submarine.

    Just speculation of couse. But it would seem a likely route as Unknown Worlds was already testing out the modular concept in BZ.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Already played the original and found it perfect the way it was.

    I don’t feel the need for a remake when it comes to SH2.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Not intentional and an error for sure, but a planned “feature” for sure.

    Ad-hell is definitely gonna get worse.

    I mean, YouTube is working on the whole “Ads during paused videos” thing.

    You can be damned sure the “console commanders” are like-minded in their plans for your home-entertainment devices.

    Faydaikin, (edited )
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I don’t know about “better”. It looks different.

    But then again, I think the original looks fine and that there’s no need for a remake. It’s just a way to milk suckers for more cash.

    “Look at the shiny! Don’t you want the shiny?”

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    I don’t know.

    But once ya’ll figure out where you stand, just know that Saber Int. has their fingers in quite a few upcoming titles.

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    But what type of spooky are you looking for?

    Faydaikin,
    @Faydaikin@beehaw.org avatar

    Welp, as a tie-over I can recommend plowing through some of the stuff on Gamejolt.

    There’s a few pretty good indie spookies for free. They aren’t too long, but have some pretty good concepts if nothing else.

    But yeah, one tends to get a bit numb on horror after a while. It helps to take a break every now and then.
