JerkyChew, do games w Return to the year 2000 with classic multiplayer DOS games in your browser

ITT: People who don’t know that Windows 95-98 and Windows ME were gui front-ends for a DOS kernel.

Most games of this era wouldn’t run on Windows 2000, the first consumer Windows OS not built on DOS.

curbstickle,

ME was the only consumer release in 2000.

2000 was the direct successor to NT4 and was specifically targeting the business market. It was available in Pro, Server, Adv Server, and Datacenter editions. I would not call it a consumer Windows OS.

CosmoNova,

That‘s interesting because I remember our home computer ran on it for a while. I guess that was only because my father was friends with a PC shop owner who knew about it.

curbstickle,

ME was basically 98 but much less stable, so a lot of people grabbed a copy of 2000 one way or another to run it at home. XP came out in 2001, bringing an end to DOS based kernels in the Microsoft lineup.

Crashumbc,

A LOT of people ran 2000 on home computers. It was the half step before XP.

Pretty much anyone not buying a prebuilt ran 2000

loutr,
@loutr@sh.itjust.works avatar

Most geeks were running 2000. Windows was easy to pirate at the time, you just needed a valid key, no online checks or anything.

RightHandOfIkaros, (edited )

Windows was built on IBM compatible MS-DOS, not regular DOS. The term “DOS” was so ubiquitous with IBM compatibility specifically, that it almost exclusively referred to MS-DOS, and not any other variant. Windows 95 does not run on top of Atari DOS, for example, and therefore trying to run any Windows 95 application in Atari DOS would not be possible.

Software natively compiled for Windows 95 will not usually run in any other variant of DOS than MS-DOS, and in some cases, even MS-DOS itself.

Quake II released in 1997 natively for Windows 95, but was not compatible with other DOS based operating systems at the time. Over the years, fans have tried to “backport” it to other variants of DOS, most notably Q2DOS. But its original PC release does not natively support any OS other than Windows 95. Many games of this era are like this, and a game released in this era usually said it was compatible with “Windows 95/98/ME,” not “DOS.”

grue,

I distinctly remember running most, if not all, of my games on Windows 2000 (not ME). I mean, yeah, NT 4 was pretty hopeless for gaming, but 2000 was better.

Flamekebab, (edited )
@Flamekebab@piefed.social avatar

I never encountered a single Windows 9x game that wouldn’t run on Windows 2000 Pro. It was my primary OS in 2003 or so, having moved from Windows 98 SE.

Is this a case of confidently incorrect?

I ran everything on 2000

4 real when Zelda was released on the switch is ran at like 1080p 30 fps. The emulator version was 4k @ 60 fps…

NuXCOM_90Percent,

The reason the switch 1 was emulated so fast was a hardware vulnerability on nvidia’s part. Presumably we won’t see that again.

Also: While switch games DO run better on a steam deck, they don’t run great. And I think estimates put the switch 2 at closer to a PS4 than PS3 in terms of power? But even PS3/360 games don’t run gerat on a Steam Deck.

Not to mention nintendo’s lawyers putting the fear of mario into the emulation community.

So in a few years? I could see MAYBE some proof of concepts. But I doubt we’ll actually be able to properly emulate switch 2 games until at least 2030.

_cryptagion,

Well, then I look forward to playing games for this retro console for free in six years when an emulator drops for the Steam Deck 2.

I like the fact they tried to compete with Steam from the begining. I have a large library of games and some real gems that I wouldn’t normally look at.

EGS is ok, GOG is ok and also Steam is just ok too for what I want from a store/launcher.

A sentiment too advanced for most G*mers.

CeeBee_Eh,

Find me another company that supports open source and Linux the way Valve does… I’ll wait

GeneralEmergency,

You mean completely ignore it until it makes them money?

CeeBee_Eh,

Bad argument.

It would hold water if their solution was proprietary and closed source. But it isn’t, and anyone else, literally anyone, can take Proton and use it in their project for profit.

Even if they closed shop tomorrow, or even just gave up work on Proton itself, we’d all still reap the benefits at no cost to us.

p03locke,
@p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Steam is just ok to for what I want from a store/launcher.

It’s not just ok, compared to the alternatives. A games library that cannot be matched, regular sales, easy no-frills refunds, cloud saves, beta support, family mode, big picture support, seamless integration with the Steam deck, which in its own right, has pushed right-to-repair and Linux gaming to new heights. The competition doesn’t even have any of this stuff, including the console market, and if they can’t compete, they don’t deserve my money.

No digital game store is worth your loyalty.

I’m fine being loyal to a privately-owned company that actually gives a shit about its customers. As long as Gabe is still alive and they will continue to be privately-owned, the company will stay in good graces.

B0NK3RS,
@B0NK3RS@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not going to argue my point any further but I will say, use it all for what you want. Absolute loyalty, which you seem to have, is pointless.

Default_Defect,
@Default_Defect@midwest.social avatar

It isn’t even loyalty for me, I just have to real reason to go to the other store with 99% of my games being on steam, mostly purchased during a sale. The only exception is GoG, because they actually offer something the others don’t with their DRM-less versions of games.

CeeBee_Eh,

No digital game store is worth your loyalty.

When that store is run by a company that contributes massively to open source and works harder and puts more money into enabling alternate platforms for gaming than all other companies combined; ya, they have my loyalty.

HKayn,
@HKayn@dormi.zone avatar

Don’t confuse their initiative for benevolence. At the end of the day it’s all still for their own benefit and their ecosystem.

The contributions to open source are still a nice side effect.

There are some that I’d be sad about.

I’d really like to see American Mcgee somehow get the entirety of the Alice license back under his control. That man has been trying to finish his vision in some fashion for almost 2 decades now. I think he may have finally given up, but dude has had it rough and it’s obviously his lifes work. I’d also love to see someone take the Sims back to its roots and I don’t think anyone is going to get the money required to do it right without getting the name.

boonhet,

Last 2 decades? Mass Effect trilogy, DA: Origins, the last few good NFS games and so on all came out less than 2 decades ago.

I will however admit I have no idea what they’ve made this last decade. I think they had an actually good Star Wars game with no MTX or online some time ago?

v4ld1z, (edited ) do games w 11 years after launch, 49M people still use their PS4s, matching the PS5

If any of you guys have a PS4 lying around gathering dust, consider jailbreaking it. Depending on the firmware, it is pretty easy to do and opens up a lot of possibilities. Surely better than being neglected :)

Edit: Firmwares up to 11.00 are jailbreakable as of recently. 11.00 is from around late 2022, so if you have a console that hasn’t been in use since then, there’s a good chance you can jailbreak it. Base model, Slim, or Pro - doesn’t matter

dependencyinjection,

Best uses of a jailbroken one?

PotatoKat,

Bloodborne 60fps

v4ld1z,

Sadly, only around 40ish fps on a base model but very cool nonetheless. The framerate and semi-smoothness kinda puts it in an uncanny valley territory for me since it looks smoother but also not smoother at the same time coming from PS5 performance. Lies of P runs a lot better in comparison even though it’s graphically more demanding, I assume

v4ld1z,

Well, obviously piracy if you’re into that. Apart from that, using cheats for games, dumping your physical games and having a permanent copy you can use without the CD and an active license (probably possible with a digital game too I assume? not sure), applying patches like a 60fps patch for Bloodborne, emulation of PS1, PS2, PSP and a bunch of other consoles etc etc.

Running Linux if you’re that kind of person :P

dependencyinjection,

Piracy is interesting. Are the HDD replaceable. Could you add a NAS.

v4ld1z,

The HDD is replacable and afaik, you can insert an SSD too. Not sure about the sizes, but an internet search should point you the right direction.

Not familiar with NAS. Isn’t that some kind of server?

dependencyinjection,

Thanks ill Google it.

NAS is Network Attached Storage. Typically a rack of drives connected to the network.

ClockworkOtter,

What kind of possibilities?

samus12345, (edited )
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

It requires an old-as-hell 9.0 firmware or below, right?

v4ld1z,

Actually not anymore. There’s been a recent breakthrough that led to a new exploit up to 11.00 being possible now. 11.00 is from, like, late 2022 I think? Obviously not an option if your PS4 has been in regular use recently, but I lucked out and got an 11.00 console from a friend of mine who hadn’t been using the PS4 for a while.

If you’re on a newer firmware, there is no way of reverting back to 11.00, unfortunately, unless you’re up for some soldering.
