ContractVille is a pretty similar game except it’s also open world and coop. It has its fair share of performance issues and bugs though, especially when you’re playing coop as a non host.
This isn’t going to be fixed. It would take too much work to actually fix it. Maybe they have enough time before April 4, but that is extensive reshooting. They’d pretty much have to trash all of the video and keep just the audio probably.
From the trailers it even looks like the story is gonna be super linear and boring. At that point they’d need to rewrite the whole thing. Even the most ambitious studio is gonna have a hard time committing to that.
I‘m somewhat sure the person who made the trailer will make a version of the film out of pure spite that works exactly like this and its going to be the best thing ever, maybe even shaking the movie industry.

Nobody is going to spend that time on a ‘fixed’ version of the movie, let alone have access to everything needed to even do this. It’s more likely that someone will make a fan-made movie with audio from the original.
The irony is, something like this probably would have been a lot less expensive to make, while also appealing more to fans. It’s funny how so many people in the movie business are not very good at, you know, the movie business.
It’s just your typical meme-movie that nobody really asked for, they gather a bunch of classic game tropes and shove it into a movie and then max out on publicity like “Haha look, so funny and recognizable Minecraft stuff. Are we right, fellow kids? We totally get you!”.
They probably could’ve gotten away with it if they just used 3D characters like the Mario movie too and it would’ve worked fine for younger audiences. It probably still will work fine for younger audiences but it feels so terribly forced.
I think they’ll get away with it because they’re deliberately marketing it the way so many similar movies are managed: formulaically for kids, but with some actors and writing meant to give ‘the adults’ something to watch too. Unfortunately, ‘the adults’ are almost always assumed to have only a passing familiarity with the subject material, and I have a feeling they’re going to write the ‘for the adults in the room’ jokes with that assumption in mind.
It feels like it’s being written on an outdated manual, ignoring the fact that there’s a very sizable core audience of 20 and 30-somethings they could tap into. My guess is that everything they tried only tested well with children in focus groups, since apparently they were dead-set on a live-action format from the very beginning. I hate to be so cynical, but it’s possible they decided to go all-in on kids because they can hit the appeal without worrying as much on the production standards.

Thanks for sharing this video. While it is a bit long and has some duplication about some games in the introduction part and the specific game parts, it was nonetheless interesting to hear about this in depth talk about the romance genre.
I think the biggest problem romance in games will always have is the inherent contradiction between game mechanics and the realistic development of a relationship. It will be between the two extremes of being a pre written story or being a “relationship vending machine”. But maybe somebody will find a way to combine both in the future. I never would have guessed that I found it fascinating to play a autocratic countries border guard and then along come Papers, Please, so who knows.
I don’t really understand the downvotes, is it due to the length or directly proving the point of the video that too many people are scared of romance in games?
I think an important step would be to not be afraid of creating characters with actual… well, character. It was somewhat mentioned in the video but it seems like devs are unwilling to make NPCs with their own likes and dislikes, ones that might disagree with players instead of being all over them no matter what. This might be a slight exaggeration but boy do I wish we had more “real” feeling NPCs in games. I’m sure I’m not the only one who couldn’t care less about being the most important being in the universe and would rather be treated as an equal part of the world.
From a mechanical standpoint, relationship system in Scarlet Hollow feels like a good step into making interactions more natural (here is a detailed look by one of the devs) but I realize it’s a lot of work for something a good chunk of players won’t care about. I understand why this isn’t something many (especially bigger) devs would be interested in using but it’s still a disappointment.
Maybe AI will be able to help somewhat with this problem in the future but I’m not going to hold my breath on that.
Same household only? Why can’t they just allow a certain number of people in your “family” use it? I have no kids, but I’d like to allow my siblings or in-laws use my games. They live in different cities.
I really doubt they’ve got an IP lock in place; just set up a Family and invite your siblings and in-laws.
Edit: tried it with a buddy, and it is in fact IP locked; he was unable to join until I set up a VPN for him to connect through. After initial setup, you don’t need the same IP address.
They do point out that they will be monitoring how it’s used, and could adjust things later.

Even if people are using it to share with actual family around the country, they may get caught up in future updates that remove that feature. Also note that any publisher can opt out of the sharing. If EA or Ubi or some other big company doesn’t like the lack of limits, they may be able to force Valve’s hand in changing the policy.
The idea is wonderful, but there are a ton sof ways this could end up worse than the old system.
This is technical but you could set up a wireguard vpn server and let your friends connect to your computer. Then you all look like you are sitting in your home network from the steam servers point of view.

Your friends will have a bit of lag though since all their connections have to go through your computer to the steam network. But I believe it may not be noticeable.

Free for 100 devices! You can legit install it on every device virtual and physical device in your home and maybe run out of devices for the free plan. Right now I use it to secure the connection between my VPS proxy and my Minecraft server, as duct tape fixing some network fuckery, and as my primary means of connecting to services inside and outside of my LAN
Oh yeah I fully expect it at some point in the future. Right now their business model appears to be “get the nerds hooked on using it on their personal stuff to see how awesome it is to then sell enterprise licenses” and they’re in the “establish growth” phase so I think there’s a few years before enshitification begins.
There is a competitor called Netbird that does similar and is fully open source and self-hostable. I haven’t tried it yet but it looks good on (virtual) paper
By my memory of what I read headscale is a reverse engineered backend using the official tailscale client, so more opportunities for breakage or the weird issues that come from a reverse engineered server with a stock closed source client. I also could be horribly misinformed and/or misremembering
I think it was initially 5 before they upped it to 100. They said they initially assumed they’d have tons of people using the subnet routing to share more than the limited number of devices, but found that wasn’t the case so they upped the free accounts
Because the point of this is to force friends and adult family members to purchase extra copies of games. Do yall actually think Valve is giving away free game access?
To those who are saying it’s not IP locked: people on reddit are all saying that the newer sign-ups are locked but they didn’t clear older sharing from early beta.
You can likely use it from different physical locations. But just know that I’m order to set it up, you have to login with your account on their computer at some point to enable the family sharing feature. So unless you go there qnd do it, or remote into their computer to do it, or give them your password, you can’t use that feature. Some level of trust in each other is required.
That is not how the new families work. The new on all you need to do is sent an invite and they'll be able to join the family. No need to log in their computers or authorise anything, just a simple invite.
It actually is how it worked in the beta at least. I’ve been using it for several months with my friends and the invite wouldn’t work unless I had logged into steam on their pc previously.
That is certainly not the case, either something unexpected happened or either of you didn't have the families beta on. I have never logged in someone else's PC and neither have someone logged on mine, I always use Steam on beta and I was able to send family invites to my friends, however only the ones in my region (country) were able to join.
We’ve been using it since it came available to test, and is such a lovely change from before. The check out system is so much cleaner than the old locked out of account while someone in the family is playing.
Also, you can share DLC now which is nice. I believe the old system if your share partner has the same game but without the DLC, you can’t share the DLC with them. Now they can play your version with the DLC.
Unfortunately multiple sources seem to agree Dong Nguyen has no involvement, which is consistent with the way he originally shut down Flappy Bird due to people spending too much time on it :(
