There is still a GPU shortage, but they just blamed Covid. Before they blamed crypto. Now they blame AI.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

The vendors should stop calling it GPUs if its not used as a GPU. AI workloads are not GPU, cryptomining are not GPU. Nvidia and alike should create a different name for it. Nvidia H100 for example is still called GPU, but it has nothing to do with a normal GPU you and I use.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

that is also fine. Or just call it "AI cards" when these chips are obviously meant from AI interference workloads.

Most unrelated thread of the month!

So I'm playing games like age of empires. But also open source alternatives like 0ad using lan. Works great!

I'm talking the old school age of empires and age of mythology games btw.

Next, there are also good need for speed games like need for speed 3 hot pursuit from 1998. Which works very well via lan.

Maybe red alert also works, or open source alternatives like OpenRA. And then we have games like Planetary annihilation, which also have lan feature.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Skill issue.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Also try 0ad for the people who like age of empires games. It's free and open source.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Correct. Nishiura said that emulators are not illegal. Depending on how it is used ;P

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Indeed

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

That is impossible in software. Even if it was written in Rust ;P

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Thanks. But it doesn't matter who you will hire.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Nooooooooooo

"You own nothing and be happy", right?

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

They mean grab by now buying it and you will keep it on Steam. But it will be unavailable for users after late December to buy it.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

ya I do agree, we shouldn't reward them by taking games away. Let's just go to 1337x

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Fk Nntendo. First, the company killed the Yuzu emulator with legal action; now, Ryujinx has been taken offline.

Until archive.org soon will be ceased. Other big ROM sites were forced to close as well.. It's madness!! And we are not doing enough to prevent this. For example: https://www.timeextension.com/news/2024/06/one-of-the-webs-oldest-rom-sites-removes-games-by-nintendo-sega-and-lego

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

We need to leverage existing solutions like how Ana archive is working. Which makes use of torrents. https://annas-archive.org/
Like read this carefully: https://annas-archive.org/datasets

1:10 Can I also then just leave the family? haha

Day 53 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I’ve been playing until I forget to post Screenshots (lemmy.world)

Today’s game is Mario Galaxy. I decided today was my day to be productive for once, and I dumped all my Wii games ROMs for safe keeping, along with all my Blu-Ray discs. While I was testing the Wii Games to see if they worked, I got distracted by Mario Galaxy....

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

try to not upload it to archive.org, or they get another lawsuit.. bankrupting them slowly. I really love archive.org, but it doesn't look good

I hope the cat is still alive. That being said, it seems that chatting was more important. Since she could indeed save the cat, if she wanted.

Steam Deck is just Linux... It's the same as installing Linux with Steam. And run Proton via Steam.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

I hope this person tries out real games. Like counter strike 3, halo 1, battlefield 3, call of duty 4 or something like that. Current games kinda suck.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

BF2 is also still good. CoD4 I really liked in the past.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Real games are games that aren't Fortnite bs (no offense). Fortnite definitely negatively impacted First person shoots IMO.

It looks very real. Is this with or without ray tracing?

Ernest needs to quickly delegate or this instance will quickly die (kbin.social)

I appreciate that earnest made a post yesterday, or maybe it was the day before, saying that he is not dead and hasn't given up on kbin. It's not on this magazine, so I'm not sure where it was since this seems to be the most appropriate one, but in any case....

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Mbin was created to get kbin to the next level.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

I asked Ernest 1 year ago about delegating and empower the software developers, but that didn't happen and will never happen. That was the reason to create Mbin.

RE: Is Ernest still here? (kbin.social)

I check in here quite often, but for now, I'm just focusing on clearing spam and keeping the instance alive. In January, I was working on the AP module, and there has been significant progress in the work, which hasn't been publicly published yet. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the year, I developed a skin condition that...

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Done that, tried that. Not working great. Hence Mbin was created.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Because this person is gaming behind his (she I think?) desk 24/7. Didnt shower for 2 weeks. And never met anybody in the past 4 months.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

You have the same problem with Steam already for years.. I mean you do not have a physical copy anymore. In fact if Steam is down, you might not be able to download, play or play multiplayer. So you own nothing and be happy - WEF.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

I did thought you were crazy in the past indeed. Since digital is the future, right? It might still is, but for some reason all game studios, producers and distributors like ubisoft or steam just create bad software/games. Where you need 24/7 internet connection and doesn't allow you to own a digital offline copy of the product. It's not just games.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Nope.. Some games will fail to start if the "main" server is down or some authentication server or whatever server it nowadays might depend on. So even if you install a game now and let it rest of years, the changes it will start again over 10 years is very low. I'm not even talking about multiplayer, since multiplayer will be definitively broken by then. And LAN features are no longer implemented by game devs.

I do agree that gamepass will only make matters worse.

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

Some games might work fine, I mentioned "some" game will fail. Especially if they require you to login first to some kind of auth. server.

Prototype for new Kbin app: Interstellar (kbin.social)

I've been working for the past week on a new kbin app. At the moment, it's just a prototype and only the "Feed" view has content (you can't sign into an account or post anything yet); you can see threads, thread images, thread comments, thread links, and thread votes/boosts. You can also change the "Theme Mode" and "Instance...

melroy,
@melroy@kbin.melroy.org avatar

I contributed a lot kbin directly in the past. It has a long history and story. Long story short: Ernest was offline for months without process, and contributors weren't allowed to merge other PRs, except their own. The way of working within the kbin project means that only Ernest will have the last say and every review goes via him. Development halted when he was gone (yes he is now back). Multiple contributors had the same feeling, hence the reason for a fork. Mbin is community focused, it's not driver my a single owner. All contributors have all rights. We work closer together and review each other code. I speak for myself, but I feel that this change of approach empowered all contributors in Mbin and more sense of responsibility. After all the drama at Kbin, Ernest didn't change either. So I'm glad a fork was created. I wish it wasn't needed.
