and I’ve got my fingers tightly crossed that the new owners will be able to keep it running long into its twilight years—even if they’ve got little planned in the way of fresh content

The Borderlands games made billions of dollars, and no one needs to keep them running.

I don’t feel bad. It’s a big number, but it was spread out over 20 years. I’m sure I’d be shocked at a lot of numbers amalgamated over 20 years.

I got Steam so I could play Half Life 2 when it was released. May 4, 2006. 153 games. $1,725 spent.

This thing about not owning the games … um … Steam is a more reliable, stable, all around better repository for my games than any device I’ve ever owned. Other than the Ubisoft games that are designed to not be re-usable (never buy Ubi again) I have access to every game I’ve bothered to spend money on for the last two decades.

CarbonatedPastaSauce, do games w Ex-PlayStation exec argues 'only the dog can hear' differences between consoles and gaming PCs: 'They're all quite similar'

Very unbiased source there.

I’m primarily a PC gamer but I buy ALL THE VIDEO GAME THINGS, so I have every console that comes out, even if I’m only going to play one game on it (looking at you, Returnal). Who is he trying to convince? Cause he’s full of shit.

PeteWheeler, do games w PC gamers spend 92% of their time on older games, oh and there are apparently 908 million of us now

New games just don’t have a ‘punch’ to it anymore. They are not not game breaking anymore.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with old games either. They are the same as they were, which is why reboots and remakes are so popular.

Luminocta,

I want to agree but some games are really well done. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a good example.

However

I feel like many people are so focused on graphics and looks, like raytracing for example, that gameplay/story has become less important? Sucks but it is what it is I guess…

ScoreDivision,

A good story isn’t something groundbreaking that marketing teams can slap on the box in the same way they can with ray tracing dlss or whatever else I guess

I have a large backlog of five(?)+ plus year old games that are really good and I have yet to play. I’d much rather burn through those enjoying them on high settings instead of playing current games on low settings while trying to dodge crap monetization.

EDIT: I just read the article and saw the mention of the “Dwarf” category. It’s maxed out on my spider graph, and I’ve only played 2 games with dwarves this year, out of 180 individual games I’ve played.

MajorHavoc, (edited )

“Dwarf” getting added as a category was a publicity stunt write in campaign by Deep Rock Galactic players, if I recall correctly.

There’s not a ton of games with the tag, but both DRG and Dwarf Fortress tend to get a lot of play hours by their players, I think.

cobysev,
@cobysev@lemmy.world avatar

I used to be big on Deep Rock’s Galactic, but I’ve hardly played it at all this year. The other dwarf game I played was The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria.

I have them on CD-ROM.

I also think I have the final patches for them on floppies that I stuffed in the boxes. Not sure if they’re readable (or in fact the final patches)

inclementimmigrant,

Thankfully it seems that PC gaming wiki still has working links to the patches.
