How about you re-release your older games on platforms I’m willing to pay for, ones that aren’t tied to an arbitrary subscription service or apart of a digital storefront that can go down at any time?

This could have been Beta 1.8 and no one would have been able to tell.

MyNameIsAtticus,

I nearly went for one of the Betas, but my computer was having issues with the Beta tried for some reason.

@missphant@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If you ever wanna try again you could give betacraft launcher a try, it’s specifically for playing alpha/beta versions.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Briefly skimmed the page but I saw a .Jar version. Is that a Java build to run in a JVM or for something else entirely?

missphant,
@missphant@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The launcher is written in Java so that’s the universal binary unlike the other platform specific ones. Just like the (very) old original Minecraft launcher.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Ah. That works out great then. Im on steam deck and get the feeling Proton wouldn’t play nice with a Minecraft launcher

arudesalad,

There’s also an .exe you could use if you’re on windows

lostme,

I wanted to nerd out, but to be sure i checked every thing i thought of. I remember that hunger was introduced in beta 1.8, but, as it turns out, so were glass panes, experience, and the new porkchop texture. And the softer cobblestone texture was introduced in beta 1.7

Frustrated, i examined the image closer and spotted some gravel in the distance with the texture that came way after beta 1.8

I concede that i wouldn’t have noticed it, but it’s not impossible >:]

silverchase,
@silverchase@sh.itjust.works avatar

Good catch with the gravel texture! I didn’t notice it in the back. On the topic of textures, I know there was a complete but very subtle texture overhaul sometime after 1.0, but I can’t tell if this is before or after that change unless I reference the changed textures side by side.

Those oldest memories of Minecraft are the most peculiar of them all. I still remember starting with either the last Alpha release, or the earliest Beta release. I had come across a comic (using screenshots from the game) of Steve looking out into the night and seeing a single pair of red eyes in a distant hill. He looks out again and a monster is looking back in (or something like that). Always wanted to find that comic again. Anyway, that was my extent of knowledge going into the game. I knew there was mining, night time, and monsters.

I remember digging a hole into a hillside to survive my first night. There was a single torch placed outside of the hole, and throughout the night I watched various animals gather around the entrance to look in at me. I remember feeling awful, thinking they wanted shelter from the monsters outside, but realized while looking back much later that they were just spawning in my torchlight.

I also recall finding sort of a canyon or mountain pass with lava flowing into it. There was a small doorway or opening on one cliff face, and several flaming poles between it and the other side. It looked like an altar of some sort. This was back when lava/fire burned leaves and left the stumps to burn eternally, but in my inexperience I thought these were pyres placed deliberately by some entity, and began to worry there was truth to the Herobrine myth. Maybe other players were in my world.

Early Minecraft was a trip.

Wolfram,

Early Beta Minecraft was interesting because it felt like anything was possible. The documentation was not like it is now, so it felt like there was a lot more. That was probably enhanced by me being an imaginative kid at that time. The early generation kept things weird and fun. I miss those days.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

Some of the oldest memories I have of Minecraft are Me and my Sister spent our entire summer looking for Herobrine (we did totems, rituals, even Herobrine “seeds”), we built this really cool multi story house for us to live in (and then I promptly evicted her after she stole one of my cats), then we compromised and built a brick house for her in a swamp.

Those early memories are some my favorites, I wish I could get back to them, even just for a moment.

I’ve been playing ones like Enigmatica. As long as it contains the Create mod then I’m happy

MyNameIsAtticus,

I fucking love create to the point when me and some friends put together a server, create is the first thing I go for. It’s cool until like the next day where I have an iron farm setup and they’re still trying to get enough for an armor set.

MintyAnt,

Yeah it’s great. If you haven’t yet check out the pack “Create: Above and Beyond”, it’s a Create centric expert pack. Pretty challenging and a lot of fun

Man, I remember I got Minecraft right after the Nether’d been introduced. Played pretty constantly until right around the oceans update, and then I got distracted and fell off.

Now looking at it there’s so much it seems almost unrecognizable.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I got Minecraft on the Xbox right around TU 3/4 (probably TU 3 since I believe TU 4 added horses and those were only added after I started playing). I would play almost daily with my Younger Sister until we both ended growing apart. The game really has grown a lot. Sometimes I can’t tell if something is a mod or vanilla when I see a post online.

I got a confirmation on my MIG being shipped just a few days ago. Also finally managed to cancel my Nintendo online subscription, they couldn’t have made that more difficult.

I think OPs point is that if Indy was burrowing a hole in the desert, and some random started talking to him, Indy probably wouldn’t respond by punching his way out of the hole.

d00ery,

I’m not sure he’s digging a hole when he seems to be stuck up to his chest!

Aielman15,
@Aielman15@lemmy.world avatar

Because he is. The person he is speaking to is a Nazi. there are other Nazis behind him. They probably dug a hole a left him there to die or something (we lack context for the scene, but it’s believable). Full scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e17p2IVDUU

For those out the loop (probably everyone since no one plays this game it seems) this is Concord by Sony, which after years of dev hell launched two days ago as an online game, but has yet to break 700 players online at a time SteamDB Source. In contrast the four year old, often called abandoned, Red Dead Online has more players during off-peak SteamDB Source

rtxn,

In contrast, the super secret Deadlock has 36k players at this time, with a 64k all-time peak, in the same week that Wukong was released. Something tells me this super secret totally restricted early access might have been a 4D chess marketing move.

I’ve been busy travelling but somehow already reached 30+ hours playtime… and still only tried a few heroes. redacted is my fave thus far, I like how redacted is redacted.

RandomWalker,

They lifted the info embargo! You can talk about it now! I’m having an amazing time with Abrams except when I play teams that know how to parry. Laning can be tricky at first, but his regen is so good you can somewhat ignore the other hero and focus on last hitting.

Randomocity,

Any chance I could get an invite. I’ve been wanting to give it a try.

something_random_tho,
deathmetal27, (edited )

I like how they say “It’s redactin time” and then redacts all over them.

poke,

I just want to provide a contrasting opinion to the other response here. I and a few of my friends have tried it and we just aren’t ready to dedicate way too much time to learning a game that seems to want to be almost as complex as DOTA2. So many characters, map mechanics, and item builds to adapt to the situation (this one in particular) - its just too much. Like, pick two and maybe I’d find it worth my time to start learning, but the complexity of all 3 make the game too daunting.

glimse,

That’s where I’m at with it. I can’t get into a game knowing I don’t have the energy to get good at playing…

Spiralvortexisalie,
Karyoplasma,

They did the same with Dota 2. If you wanted a key, you could just ask Valve directly and get one (if none of your friends had a spare), it was not an exclusive club house for the cool kids.

I don’t think it’s 4D-marketing chess, it’s more like people who’ve already shown enough interest to ask for an invite are more likely to leave feedback when they find something off with it.

For the record the devs said this game took eight years to make, and might’ve been pitched even earlier than that. I can’t imagine working on a project for a decade and releasing to… This.

LouNeko,

Red Dead 2 took 8 years to make. I bet my soul on that Concord was quickly thrown together in the last couple years by temp diversity hires and 3rd party contractors, or at least the version of Concord that we got now. I love that one of the devs said that “a lot of talented people worked on it”. If it really took them 8 years to make that is the oppsotite of talent. In 8 years I could probably get get a double masters in programming and game development and make a better game myself.

xep,

I strongly encourage you to try making a game to see what it's like, especially if it sounds like you might enjoy doing it.

shooters peaked at titanfall and it’s all been downhill from there.

I don’t want a fucking ‘hero’ character unless it’s a PVE game with an actual GODS DAMNED STORY.

Fuck this shit.

ChillPenguin,

Spec ops: The Line, perfect example of an actual ‘hero’ character shooter with a story.

Bosht,

God damned right. Yes, Apex Legends was/is great. Sure. But I’d rather have had more Titanfall. 10000 times over more Titanfall.

ocassionallyaduck,

Yea originally I hoped all the Overwatch shorts were building to something.

But no, the overwatch “plot” is just random erratic threads going all over the place. Fuck that.

Every other hero shooter has been similar, and most don’t even get close to having unique enough characters or an interesting setting to care. Concord at least have the character part it seems,but the gameplay and well, everything else is just meh.

that was the plan for overwatch, but they massively fucked it up on several fronts. game’s still fun though imo
