I'll give it less than a week until someone puts an app meant for something else on the App Store that actually just solves this problem for everyone. Then less than 6 months before they make it subscription only.

muddybulldog,

Already exists. The Star Trek Archive, one of the showcase apps for VP, can play arbitrary videos and supports all the major 3D formats, including the side-by-side commonly used in the andult industry.

You already don’t own your games. Or much of anything else really. You purchase a license to use the product.

At any time the people who sell you these products decide they don’t want to offer their products or services, if they want to abandon them altogether, if they want to brick your hardware and not accept responsibility, if they want to remove features, if they want to add new paywalls, they can do all of these things and see no repercussions.

The only thing you can do is wait until the game has demonstrated that it might be worth what they’re charging, buy a copy from a DRM-free store, then create a local/cloud backup.

I could see myself not playing with a subscription service. I can only play games only so many hours a week as I have a lot more commitments now. I’m not gonna spend money on a monthly subscription for a handful of games that I might play. I’ll just go back to pirating games.

Agree, I own a lot of games in Steam but most come from bundles or were not bought a full price. I do buy full price games on GOG because I can have a backup offline. hack score match 2023

  • DebatableRaccoon,

Not even slightly. I tried to explain this concept to my friend some weeks back and he downright refused to believe Steam or other platforms would leave players without their games if they were to go belly-up, for example.

    TheEntity,

Do we really own any games at all? We own licenses, nothing more. Even if it's on a DVD.

TommySalami, do gaming w Epic Games Admits In Court That Its PC Store Still Isn't Profitable

I think I’d be more surprised if it was profitable. Anecdotal, but I (and most people I know) exclusively use Epic for free games.

    plistig,

They gave away so many good games … and in doing so taught their target group not to spend money to buy games on their platform. Outstanding move!

    NightOwl,

When I saw Alan Wake 2 was an epic exclusive my immediate thought was I can just wait for a giveaway like they did for Control.

    espiritu_p,

exactly that was my thought on Borderlands 3.
And after gatting it for free my realisation was that it even is the worst part in the whole series. Not bad, but the story isn't that overwhelming as the stories in BL1 or BL2 had been.

Turmbaumeister, do gaming w 2023 Is The Best Year For Games In A While (And Maybe Ever?)

It is but perhaps because the last few years were just lacking any great games. For me there wasn’t a single title better than 9 out of 10 since DOS2 until this year.

Everyone had just been dumping pseudo big, pseudo long open worlds with a boring story. And the main strategy games are ruined by corporate greed with countless DLCs (just check EU4 price with dlc).

This year though: Lies of P, BG3, FFXVI, F1 23, just great and I still have lords of the fallen to play.

Imagine leaving Lost Odyssey off of this list.

(Although I suppose maybe you need more than one game to be considered a “franchise” 😢)

    Vordus,

I think they published it, but don’t actually own it.

    @brawleryukon@lemmy.world avatar

Microsoft at least owns the trademark on it. Not being a lawyer, I don’t know if that’s at all decoupled from “the IP” or not, but I suspect they’d be tied fairly close together.

It would also be weird if Mistwalker signed a contract giving MS ownership of Blue Dragon (which is on the list, but has multiple games from different publishers) but not Lost Odyssey. I guess maybe the solution would be to remove Blue Dragon from the list rather than adding Lost Odyssey. 🤷‍♂️
