CharlesReed, do kbinMeta w Is Ernest still here?

I've been wondering the same thing. I really like kbin's interface, so I'm holding out that he comes back before I think about trying another instance.

athos77, do kbinMeta w Is Ernest still here?

Someone in another thread said he had an operation about a month ago, but I don't have any details other than that.

Yeah he did have a medical procedure, on top of just finishing with divorcing his wife. Guy's got plenty on his plate I'm sure.

just finishing with divorcing his wife

Has—against his best wishes—he been shot?

Note: This is an irreverent reference to an event and I have no more reasons to think he has actually been shot than I do to believe she was in hospital having GRS.

In any event I imagine Ernest is fine.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

Phew, sure is reassuring that our confirmation of this is that you imagine it.

FfaerieOxide,
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

You want me putting out in the universe the opposite? Them's dangerous vibes to be fucking around with.

Either Ernest is fine and you can take comfort in that knowledge or Ernest is dead and you can take comfort in the knowledge that you can do things like throw up websites and they can keep going months after you kick it.

I don't think if Ernest were dead you and I would be talking about it on kbin.social.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

Seems kind of extreme to suggest such a drastic scenario. The possibilities are more numerous than either he’s 100% fine or dead (which, btw, you are the one “putting that into the universe). I wouldn't guess that’s what people were thinking… rather that perhaps he was in ill health, had lost interest or had other projects that were taking priority, perhaps due to practical financial considerations. Thankfully Ernest has posted an update answering this question, and he says while he has been hindered by some health circumstances recently, things are basically on track.

FfaerieOxide,
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

you are the one “putting that into the universe

No, I put out into the universe that he was alive. You are welcome for the vibes.

I wouldn't guess that’s what people were thinking

He hasn't been, like... hit by a bus or anything

That's what people said they were thinking.

Tlaloc_Temporal, do gaming w Male players: Why do you play female characters?
@Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca avatar

My favorite reason is seeing women in roles not explicitly written for women. Either it helps me reframe what women can be (reframing being a great reason to read stories anyway) or it points out how hilariously coded those roles are.

My second favorite reason is about playing something I am not, and examining how that changes my outlook and decisions. It’s the same reason I want to play as a robot, or an alien, or a golem, or a dwarf, or whatever else.

Lastly, but maybe most poignantly, is women tend to have more varied depictions than men. There are far too many depictions of men that are brutish, boisterous, and warlike, which I am extremely not, and usually don’t have any want to play as. Games that give you a character creator are way better in this respect, and I’m much closer to 50/50 male/female characters in those.

IHadTwoCows,

I also do not like the way men are portayed in games, though Kyle Katarn was reasonable. Guys like Dwayne Johnson and Jason Mamoa do not intimidate me; they are actors selling their body as a marketable image.

I usually play as a woman if possible because I get to watch a fine ass walking around. The developers know.

violetraven,
@violetraven@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Imagine experiencing this IRL.

bermuda,

Agree with the varied depictions. I did two playthroughs of cyberpunk (before phantom liberty) and female V says similar lines but in such different tones and much more expressive. I.e. when I pick an aggressive dialogue option it sounds like she’s more devious where male V is more of a brute. Stuff like that.

wfh,

Female V’s voice acting is 🔥

Pratai, do gaming w Male players: Why do you play female characters?

By-and-large, they are more committed to the VO from my experience, which lead to a more believable character and is almost always more immersive as a result.

Male VO is always played as arrogant and tryhard/heroic but comes off as cringy and bland. Whereas female VO seems to typically be played as a survivor-type just trying to figure things out and live. Which is almost always the correct call for the character.

daredevil, (edited ) do kbinDevlog w RTR#30 Monthly Recap and Planned Next Steps

Do you have any favorites that have significantly improved your instance experience?

  • @kbinDevlog -- transparency and continuous updates were probably the biggest thing for me. Thank you @Ernest.
  • Transfer of abandoned magazines
  • Request for magazine moderator
  • Improved account and magazine deletion
  • Anti-spam protections
  • function

Regarding Collections: I'm wondering if it might be useful to allow transfer ownership of collections as well? Probably low priority, but this could be useful if:

  • The owner becomes inactive
  1. A magazine or community becomes problematic + has inactive moderators
  2. Other magazines/communities become more/less relevant over time, thus the collection needing adjustments

Re 1:

  • Could be mitigated on kbin magazines due to magazine ownership transfers, however, may pose an issue on federated magazines from lemmy
  • Also could be mitigated by the creation of a new collection, hence probably low priority

Re 2:

  • Could be low priority in regard to certain magazines/communities becoming inactive over time, however, the chance to miss out on discussions and threads should possibly be considered
  • However, this is also mitigated by also creating new collections -- I just think people generally like to avoid migrating when followings settle in.

Transferring collection ownership could also be excessive/unnecessary? Thoughts? Does the status of an official collection change automatically based on the user count?

Also regarding collections: After following a collection -- going to a collection's page and attempting to unfollow is described as "delete". This may give off the wrong impression to unfamiliar users. Perhaps "unfollow", or "unfavorite" may be better suited? I also wonder if it may be more appropriate to have favorited collections appear at the top of the collections view so users can quickly find the collections they follow in order to avoid being buried by the popular ones. This could also potentially be solved by giving subscribed collections its own tab in the navbar next to magazines? Is that perhaps too many tabs in the navbar?

Anyways, thank you so much Ernest. I know some people were unhappy about /kbin's development progress for awhile, but I'm really glad I stuck with it. Despite the challenges that came your way, watching you get back into the swing of things and /kbin's growth has been a joy to be a part of. The consistent communication and having our feedback be heard is also a big plus. As always, looking forward to what else is on the way.

Edit: Also, really glad to hear you're prioritizing sustainability, balance, and a strong foundation for the future. I hope you're able to get the support you're looking for, so you can give this project the time and effort you think it deserves. It's clear you care a lot about this project.

firebreathingbunny,

It's not an argument. It's a series of questions that you failed to answer.

Same arguments people use when pronouns are important to them. Guess were not so different after all!

firebreathingbunny,

It's not the same argument because I have answers for the personal pronoun pushers but you people have no answers for me.

ampersandrew, (edited ) do games w What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for?
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been fairly nostalgic for 6th gen consoles lately. Not that it was some magic time for video games, but there were certainly genres that were well represented back then that aren’t so much today, like stealth games, arcade racing games, and campaign first person shooters with co-op and split-screen deathmatch. These days, every multiplayer game is designed to be played forever or not at all, rather than being designed to be fun with friends a handful of times.

Games also came out at a rapid clip, with most sequels coming out only a year later. Sure, some of that was due to crunch that we were oblivious to, but even if that cadence were twice as long, it would still be a huge improvement over development cycles today. Most single player games these days are open world by default, as though that’s the natural goal for all video games, no matter how many of them it’s made worse and no matter how much time and money it takes to make them.

Edit: I was half-awake enough while typing this that I ended up going almost opposite of the prompt, but so much to say that no era was all sunshine and rainbows, so I’ll never be fully nostalgic for any era.

I remember how many damn licensed games came out during that period. There was just almost a game for everything, it was nuts.

American Choppers had a game. Hannah Montana had several. Let's give Dukes of Hazzard a game, let's give Starsky and Hutch a game. Do they have to be good? Nope, they never were but let them be a thing anyways.

otp,

Do they have to be good? Nope, they never were but let them be a thing anyways.

There were definitely some good licensed games!

TMNT Turtles in Time and The Simpsons are two amazing beat 'em ups.

The licensed games by Capcom on the NES are generally a safe bet for a good (if not great) game. Even into the 16-bit era, too.

The [X] of Illusion games on the Genesis are great kid-friendly platformers (Mickey Mouse games).

Plenty of great licensed games throughout the generations too. For something more “recent”, consider the success of the Lego games…which are often basically doubly-licensed.

I'm glad that you're feeling somewhat better and are on the mend!

Bringing more people on board for moderation is definitely a good idea, as is delegating administration. I think it's clear to everyone who keeps up with all your updates that the coding/development is where your heart lies :) Absolutely prioritise these things; reddit's IPO is in a week and a half, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the fediverse, and /kbin, grow because of that.

I'm happy to put my name forward for helping out with moderation (as I'm sure plenty of other people will, too). You've made something special in /kbin, and helping keep it focused and spam-free through moderation feels like the least we could do to help out!

I’m not attracted to masculine characters. You want me to care what a dude looks like? You’re barking up the wrong tree. And if I wanted to look at myself, I’d look in a mirror

My avatar is not me… If I’m going to watch a character for a couple dozen hours, it’s going to be someone I find attractive. Hell, if I’m going to spend more than 5 minutes on a character creation screen, it’s going to be a woman, because it’s hard to get invested in a male character for me
