I’m not going to pick through his last year’s posts and make a diagnosis, but if you’ve seen no evidence of that, I think you’re wilfully ignoring the signs.

Ok, I'll continue "ignoring" evidence you can't even describe ("He talked somewhere about..."), much less cite.

For all we know his frequent absence is down to a great work-life balance on his part.

Irrespective this thread is not about who is or is not burnt out, it's about how posts like your are what enabled the xz backdoor to happen.

I don't know what this xz thing is about, first time hearing it.

Someone pressured the maintainer of a compression tool used in a bunch of open source software to hand over the keys by citing burnout and offering to "help" then spent ~3 years slowly adding tiny changes that combined to form a backdoor in SSH that nearly compromised the entire internet or something.

It was only barely caught by accident because it made some thing some guy was doing that wasn't even related a fraction of a second slower.

Been all over the FOSSiverse for days, and the social engineering that was used on the xz maintainer reminded me personally of similar pressure certain people have applied to Ernest in most threads about kbin performance I have seen.

I said that already, mbin might be good but I didn't like the advertisement.

I'm not quite sure what your position is. I am by no means an mbin booster. In fact I find some of the people pushing mbin over kbin (in lieu addition too) jerks about it.

This whole thread has been about the similarities I noticed between comments people made about/to Ernest previously and the sort of comments we later learned led to the xz backdoor.

When I started to read breakdowns about the social engineering behind the xz backdoor I was like, "Waaaaitaminute, I've seen that sort of talk before." I found it notable to point out the similarity and maybe poke around at it.

People decided to use the thread (to my excessive chagrin) to talk shit about kbin and rehash the exact same pressures I was attempting to analyze.

Kbin/Mbin is still the only platform(s) to try to bridge the two.

Moreover it seems to have better discoverability than mastodon Mastodon. I can type a word or phrase in the search bar on kbin and find "Mastodon" posts whereas I'm stuck viewing whatever is timeline trending on Mastodon proper unless I follow someone or can figure out whatever hashtag person might have affixed to their post.

Even with kbin being down a good 1/5 of the time it remains the best ActivityPub viewing experience (in my).

Has there ever been a time kbin.social didn't do that from time to time? 503 is a friend of mine at this point. Neither one of us has abandoned this place for twitter so this place is clearly at least robust enough (code- and community- wise) for us still to be having this conversation here.

Heck, I could (though won't and don't yet) argue the errors are a feature to keep you getting hooked on scrolling. There's at least 2 projects I have finished I wouldn't have worked on if this place hadn't been down at the time.

Lemmy hasn't grabbed me yet like kbin has. Is mastodon as integrated with lemmy as it is with kbin?

Apparently you can't say fag on lemmy.world which could cause some problems with some of the magazines I mod here. Also I'm left with negative feelings from lemmy.world not federating images and posts I reply to .world threads from .social.

I'm curious what counts as a decent instance for you?

Open signups, non-US servers, GDPR-compliant, file uploads, local magazines among other attributes.

Also if you visit an instance and it appears that whoever runs it never even conceived you might not be viewing it from a phone, that's a turn off.

I said "around", not "on". It was rather clever wordplay.

Telling every single person in the world there are possibilities they can explore is a good thing and no level of unease at that self-examination is any person counters that good.

A person who is trans will be better off knowing and dealing with it and the sooner the better.

A person who isn't trans is part of the dominate social hierarchy and will be fine, even if they are exposed to info that doesn't apply to them or the consideration of that info makes them feel icky.

I empathize if you've been tied to a chair and forcibly boofed with horse urine, I condemn such an affront to your autonomy.

I do point out that that this is a reply thread than began with someone informing a person hormones existed and describing their effects. No comment was made that the person to whom this info was proffered should take the substance, nor was any comment made about what it would mean for anyone's identity whom did.

If it is being suggested to me I should consider the "harm" a hypothetical cis person may come to in being told it's possible to not be cis and in so considering refrain from or hesitate in informing a hypothetical trans person of the same, I never will.

A person can say, "I am confidently cisgender and enjoy typical pastimes generally associated with my sex." That is a great time to tell them hrt exists and what it does.

A person can say, "Nice weather today, huh?" That is a great time to tell them hrt exists and what it does.

Rose Tyler can walk into the time vortex of a TARDIS heart, and that would be a great time to write that hrt exists and what it does across all of time and space.

No one is better off not knowing transition is possible, and the implication mention of trans existence should ever be avoided for the benefit of non-trans persons I find just-this-side-of troubling.
