My team’s return to office was so successful that we all had the opportunity to share covid with each other and nearby teams. Management’s complete lack of understanding of the work they are tasked to oversee makes arm waving butts in chairs policies seem like a viable way to not seem incompetent.

mesamunefire, (edited )

My old place of employment told everyone that they had to go back to office earlier this year. 1 month later, about 10 people out of a 15-ish department found remote jobs. They just shuttered the local office after a couple more months. My new place is much better :).

Most of us are experienced software developers or software adjacent. There is a lot of companies looking.

This is going to be the pattern at all these places doing RTO: The ones who are capable of getting WFH jobs will get them, and they'll be left with their least capable folks.

mesamunefire,

Yep! I was lucky in a way, I had a friend of mine who recently got a job that needed help/was hiring. There were a couple people when they let go of everyone that is still looking for work.

WFH jobs are a huuuuge benefit.

vexikron,

Its real estate. They have huge, expensive offices they /know/ are barely necessary, and they absokutely cannot afford the loss they would incur if they had to sell (because all that is debt financed and based on bullshit) AND uf one large tech or office firm did that, soon there would be pressure on all of them to do that.

That could crash the commercial real estate market and lead to the real estate market in general going down.

While this would benefit the vast majority of workers, it would financially harm those with lots of vested stocks and other investments.

Oh and of course working from home makes middle management /obviously/ more or less useless. And basically all managers (there are some exceptions) and all VPs (near 0 exceptions) and above are sociopaths who crave feeling important and superior to others, and they will do anything to continue that lifestyle.

Why do you think the largest union actions in the US in maybe 50 years are either not covered by the media, or demonized in the few instances they are?

I only played the NDS version of this game which definitely included Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario as playable characters. And a multiplayer mode where each character was Yoshi and could put on hats to play as Mario, Luigi, or Wario. Was any of that in the N64 version of the game?

TALL421,
@TALL421@lemmy.one avatar

No. DS only. N64 Mario 64 is only Mario, no multiplayer. But having grown up on the ds version as well, i would just like to say all that stuff is rad.

Larian Studios made a beautiful game without microtransactions, battle passes, and other BS! I think not being on GamePass is quite alright as they deserve the full asking price for this wonderful game! I am going to buy Baldur's Gate 3 for my Xbox because I love the game so much (I also want to create a Charismatic Terror character...This gives me the excuse to do just that).

Phegan, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 'Isn't Going to be on Game Pass', Insists Larian Boss

Game pass might be a good deal, and I don’t fault anyone for wanting to maximize gaming on a budget, but the transition to subscription based gaming is going to be very bad for studios in the long term.

XbSuper, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 'Isn't Going to be on Game Pass', Insists Larian Boss

That’s unfortunate. I want to try this game, but I feel like I’m either going to love it, or hate it, and don’t want to waste my money if it’s the latter.

Any place I can try a demo?

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

That’s unfortunate.

Nah, it’s expected. BG3 doesn’t fit in a service for 7/10 games.

Any place I can try a demo?

Get it on Steam, try it for up for 2 hours, and return it if you don’t like it. That’s possible since years.

Metz,

Weird to see you getting downvoted for a legitimtate question. It’s a shame Demos are not really a thing anymore.

WeLoveCastingSpellz,

pirate it, buy it if you pike it. dont’t if you don’t like it

talab,

If you or a friend has a PS5 with a PS Plus Premium subscription, you can trial the game for two hours. Your progress will transfer over if you decide to buy, but that’s as close as you’re going to get to a demo I think.

bouh,

On steam you can try for a few hour and get a refund if you don’t like it. Maybe on gog too.

stopthatgirl7, (edited )
!deleted7120 avatar

The only demo is on PS5 if you have a PS+ Premium. I’d suggest watching the first hour or so of a Let’s Play to see what the gameplay is like.

darth_helmet,

Steam has a two hour refund window. Watch a stream and then set a timer and try it out.

pory,
@pory@lemmy.world avatar

Pirate it. There’s no DRM. Buy it if you like it.

yildo, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 Developers Explain Its Controversial Endings, Beloved Characters, and Making the Best RPG of 2023

SV: One of the basic questions of the game was whether you would become a monster if it would save the world. So that's where you get that in that moment. And then the interesting bit was, well, if you're not going to do it, are you going to ask someone else to do it, or you just going to say, "F*ck everybody?" That's essentially what that moment was.

Yep. My first playthrough was as Karlach with a strict code of no non-consensual body mods ever again and no giving baddies power, so when I got to that choice the only true thing I could choose was "F*ck everybody" with the automatic loss dialog box. Oh well

My current playthrough is as Astarion with a slightly more flexible moral code. Of course, now I've gone for the brainworms and I'm regretting it simply for the visual effects on the skin

ryathal, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 'Isn't Going to be on Game Pass', Insists Larian Boss

Game pass needs games with lots of dlc and season pass bullshit for it to make sense for non Microsoft games. If you actually make a good game, it’s way more profitable to ignore game pass.

Osa-Eris-Xero512,

It's also profitable for long-duration early access games where most of your users and potential purchasers already have already bought it. Good cash injection right at the end of development from an audience that probably wasn't going to buy it anyway.

echo64,

Whilst devaluing your sales for the next thing as now people say “ill wait for it to be free”

Rose,

That’s just untrue. Games like Immortality, Citizen Sleeper, Unpacking, and Planet of Lana are complete, highly-rated, and on Game Pass.

Ashtear, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 Developers Explain Its Controversial Endings, Beloved Characters, and Making the Best RPG of 2023

Great interview.

It’s interesting to hear how sanguine they are about putting so much into content that only a fraction of players will see. A year on ending permutations! That’s exactly the kind of thing that being an independent studio makes possible, because corporate AAA producers and publishers aren’t going to go for that.

I would not think there is much incentive to do so when the game is good and selling well.

ABCDE,

Because I want it to be. (:

Will be getting it on Steam later on though!

MindSkipperBro12,

Pay full price, it’s worth more than they’re charging it for.

Bob_Robertson_IX,

I agree, I was of the mindset that I wasn’t going to buy it at launch because too many games are broken at launch, but then I the reviews were all great, and I learned that there would be no microtranactions and I realized that this is the type of game I want to reward by buying early and paying full price. I’ve not been disappointed.

ABCDE,

Okay? I already said I am going to buy it but it would be great if it was on Game Pass which I already pay for, which apparently is downvote worthy that I am a bit poor at the moment.

caut_R,

People can be weird, don‘t worry about it. You wait until it costs whatever it‘s worth to you, not others.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, you didn’t mention anything related to you only being able to afford gaming via GamePass in your current situation, so it can’t be that. Maybe your comment just didn’t jive with people on its own merit, completely unrelated to your financial situation. (I don’t have any particular feelings about your comment in either direction, so I’m just speculating.)

ABCDE, (edited )

It’ll get it on Steam later, the implication was there. Odd, though. I was considering console until I saw how the frame rate is: “frame-rates are in the low 30s in performance mode (with some screen-tearing) and a nearly locked 30fps in quality mode” (Eurogamer). Definitely getting it on PC, eventually.

Rose,

Games reach Game Pass via deals similar to those offered by Epic. Microsoft pay the publisher a fixed amount, so if it is believed that it beats the proceeds from the projected sales for the given period, there’s no reason not to agree to it. In other words, it’s all about how much they would offer and how long it would have been since the game release.

Venat0r,

It can decrease the value of the game in the customer’s mind though, which can result in them being unwilling to buy it at a higher price.

What!? Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t win. Who saw that one coming?

HeyJoe, do games w IGN's 2023 Games of the Year

The only reason I wish it was BG3 would be for the industry to know there is absolutely still a market for these kind of games. At the same time I think they realize that now anyway. It will be interesting to see the uptick in that game type over the next 3-5 years.

Son_of_dad,

After the layoffs, it’s clear that the studio doesn’t care about their devs or the industry, for that alone Baldur’s Gate doesn’t deserve the win.

De_Narm,

What layoffs? If you’re refering to the posts earlier today: The layoffs happened at Hasbro and Larian was only commenting on it because they worked with them. Larian itself had no layoffs I know of.

Nioro,

It wasn’t the studio that laided people off.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Larian didn’t lay anyone off. Hasbro, a completely different company, laid people who worked on DnD and MTG off at WotC.

WarmSoda,

The industry knows. There were articles about how the game scared everyone because it was released finished and it’s fun.

SuperSaiyanSwag, (edited )

“Finished”

Edit: to anyone downvoting. I’m playing the game with my partner on ps5. It has been fun, but now we are in act 3 and the game crashes every time she joins the game. The solution I have found is if I return to the camp and then let her join, it works. That’s why it’s not a “finished” game for me.

WarmSoda, do games w IGN's 2023 Games of the Year

They both deserve it, imo.
I hope there’s more CRPG goodness on the way, and I hope the next Zelda is another departure in a different direction.

SuperSaiyanSwag,

BoTW started something fresh and imo ToTK perfected it. It is my game of the year, but I hope the next game is a departure.

All misses for me. Maybe next year.

Also, isn’t Phantom Liberty a fucking DLC and not a game?

Chozo,

Yeah, I'm not sure why Phantom Liberty is in the running at all. Maybe because the 2.0 update was such a significant upgrade to the base game that they're classifying it as a new entry? I'm not really sure what else they're thinking.

Rose,

Patting on the back for fixing a broken game is almost enabling game developers to release unfinished games only to finish them years later.

VerseAndVermin,

I nominate No Man’s Sky for Game of the Year.

Why9,

I’m not going to lie, I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun playing a shooter as I did playing Cyberpunk after the 2.0 patch and Phantom liberty DLC.

It became one of my top games of all time, and despite having finished it and trying to force myself to play something else, I’m itching to redownload it so I can get back to night city.

It took a while but I don’t think it should be excluded from the list just because of its original shortcomings. The game’s come a long way and it’s absolutely a contender for game of the year.

BG3 is still the well deserved winner though

GrammatonCleric,
@GrammatonCleric@lemmy.world avatar

While I understand, Cyberpunk was released long before 2023. They already had their shot at this.

Why9,

Yeah you’re right.

That was me just letting my emotions for the game get the better of me. The best and only award it could have won is the Best Ongoing Game award, which it won at TGA.

It’s good to see CDPR finally get back into gaming’s good graces and I’m sure they’ve learned their lesson as the public and critics were far, far more harsh for the release of Cyberpunk 2077, than they were for Witcher 3. Time will tell what state Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 II release in!

Gamoc,

Then they should go back in time and release the current version instead of the original. Phantom liberty is an expansion, 2.0 is a patch, neither is a game.

Why9,

Yeah, true. It was good of them to get recognised but they really shouldn’t be considered for anything beyond the award they won at TGA (Best Ongoing Game)

Rose,

The Game Awards also treated it like a game. I think it’s giving it special treatment. Some DLCs like Freedom Cry were available without owning the base game, but that’s not even the case here.
