base, (edited ) do games w Wreckfest 2 Launches With Transparent Early Access Woes and Impressively Destructive Car Crashes

This is a weird one for me.

When the first Wreckfest(back then Next Car Game) launched as a crowdfunded game 12(?) years ago as an early access title it made sense. Flat Out as a franchise wasnt in their hands anymore and it hit rockbottom. So to develop a new game in a genre which had no competitor at the time with the community was compelling. Ngl the development was rocky at times. But in the end they made a super good game. THQ Nordiq got on board and with that funds for very big improvements in the tech it dearly needed. At times the game barely ran on high end PCs. But the engine got optimized so well it started to run well on the (now)last-gen consoles, then the switch and even mobile phones. But with that came also a lot of additions i really disliked. The physics got nerfed for the consoles but also on the PC, DLC galore, FOMO weekly events, the pretty realistic(ish) focus on folk racing shifted more into Flat Out 2 madness. The current game is very different to 1.0 . Not all for the better IMHO(!)

Either way: They again have a franchise with name recognition, they have a decently modern engine and game with lots of content to build upon and a publisher with funds. I dont see why an early access is needed? Especially in this super bare bones form with barely any cars or tracks(some even lifted from the last game) and nothing(!) else. I’ve put hundreds of hours into the last game. I still love it. Also i could really use finally a fresh new racing title after all the disappointments in the last years. But this… in this form isnt it. Especially knowing the community feedback might get thrown out in the future when the money man make decision. Meh

SolidShake,

For fomo people.

Like me! :) I've been having lots of fun with it. The AI is so much better and the car handling as well. Didn't realise till last night there's a massive collision like derby tucked away in one of the speedway modes. That was fun. Can't wait for more content to drop.

REDACTED,

I do not expect to play games for a long time and I’m patient, so when I do want to play some game and it’s still in early access or is in active development (Like STALKER 2), I just put it off for later so that when I do finally play it, it’s a much better game/experience. This reminds me that it’s about time I finally try out cyberpunk (bought on day one, never launched)

My prediction is that Silksong will be a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title or something similar.

Power to them. I’m sure Hollow Knight made them all independently wealthy. I’d be hard pressed to bother to work too hard, too.

neon_nova, do games w 6 years and 1 prolonged delay later, Xbox is still calling "incredible" Hollow Knight: Silksong one of its "upcoming games"

I want them to take all the time they need. The more time in the oven, the better.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Only as long as it’s not in the oven so long due to mismanagement and constantly changing direction.

See: Duke Nukem Forever

neon_nova,

Ohh uh yeah good point.

I didn’t check, but I’d guess it’s the same small group of people who made the first one.

Maybe at this point they are holding off to make it a switch 2 launch title.

CaptDust,

Team cherry is like 4 people, I’m confident that’s not a problem.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It could be the sudden and unexpected success of Hollow Knight paralyzing them the way that happened with Valhiem. Not that it’s necessarily a fault of the devs; you hit a huge success like that, there is now a weight on your shoulder to always be that good.

CaptDust, (edited )

This could be, hollow knight is one hell of a bar to clear. Valhiem was a lesson that studios are hard to scale up, and doing it distracts from development. There’s also something to be said about making a dream project, then having the focus and drive to keep it going and expanding.

Annd It’s possible their main dev might be addicted to balatro and there’s no way to factor or predict that kind of impact.

Development on your game being delayed because you’re too busy playing another game is perfectly fair.

I can’t be mad at that. xD

glitchdx, do games w 6 years and 1 prolonged delay later, Xbox is still calling "incredible" Hollow Knight: Silksong one of its "upcoming games"

are they still working on it? yes? then it will come out when it comes out. There’s enough content in my backlog to keep me occupied for another 5 years at least, and more new games release every day. I can wait.

hal_5700X, do games w 6 years and 1 prolonged delay later, Xbox is still calling "incredible" Hollow Knight: Silksong one of its "upcoming games"

Six years of hype, it never going to live up too. Team Cherry did this to themselves.

Artyom,

It is hard to make a sequel to the best game of all time, unless it is the new best game of all time. I’m not sure the extended dev time is the dominant issue here.

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t have to be the best game of all time. It just has to be at least as good as Hollow Knight.

CarbonBasedNPU,

I just don’t see it happening at this point. I hope they prove me wrong but my intention is telling me it’ll be at most 7/10.

shadowedcross,
@shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works avatar

Even that would be difficult for any developer.

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

True, but some pretty good clones have come out since Hollow Knight, so it’s not impossible.

Abnorc,

The lack of communication from Team Cherry is the only issue, and it’s the primary thing that makes me skeptical about the game ever releasing. If they were working on the game for this long, they’d at least have enough material to give us some kind of an update. It could be as small as a blog post.

Not to imply that they owe us that or anything. They possibly are just completely disinterested in marketing. It’s a little hard to believe given the amazing trailer that they put together years ago, but it’s still possible.

caseofthematts,

They do kinda owe people something - at least those that contributed to the funding of the first game. Silksong was originally a 2nd playable character that was unlocked as a reward from the Kickstarter for Hollow Knight. Then it turned into a DLC, and now it’s turned into a full game.

50_centavos,

Idk if you’re being sarcastic but Hollow Knight is far from the best game of all time. Not saying it’s not good, but to crown it ahead of soooo many better games is pretty ridiculous.

SomethingBurger,

And even if it were the best game of its genre, how can you compare it to other best games of all times like GTA SA or Mario Galaxy 2? They are totally different.

Artyom,

What a shit take. Excuse me while I go play Hollow Knight again…

50_centavos,

👍

I mean… basically every platform is calling it an “upcoming game”. I want to say even fricking Nintendo have put it in a few sizzle reels?

Yes, it is a scientific fact that acknowledging Silksong adds at least another week until it releases. But it is also THE biggest indie game out there.

ampersandrew, do games w 6 years and 1 prolonged delay later, Xbox is still calling "incredible" Hollow Knight: Silksong one of its "upcoming games"
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

There’s a beta test branch on Steam that was uploaded 5 months ago, and the game has been age rated in South Korea. Yes, that game is coming. For good reason, it’s also the belle of the ball when it comes to marketing deals, so as much as it’s a meme to say maybe it’s at the next Nintendo Direct, it might be at the next Nintendo Direct. For everyone’s sake, I hope it gets its release date soon so that we can stop talking about it.

JPAKx4,

If it was at the direct, they would have rolled with the “teasers” that people invented

RightHandOfIkaros, do games w 6 years and 1 prolonged delay later, Xbox is still calling "incredible" Hollow Knight: Silksong one of its "upcoming games"

That title seems like it is intended to sound extremely derogatory / condescending

CaptDust,

GamesRadar has been pushing these “but where gam?” articles for some time. It started right after silksong was delayed past the original hollow knight dev time. They seem utterly convinced silksong will be vaporware, or (more likely) it drives plenty of clicks complaining.

tonytins,
@tonytins@pawb.social avatar

I wasn’t aware of that.

CaptDust,

It was way more obvious back when team cherry went radio silence (circa 2022?) - and on some level I can understand “we’re game journalists, no one gets a pass” targeting a heavily delayed game, but I’m admittedly one of those fans that have no problem giving Cherry whatever time they need. I’m in no rush.

I guess I know not to buy more from then in that case. I’m tired of playing same slop from different companies that dont want to try anything new. DRG is good game but it also feels like its not living up to its fullest potential, now i know why.

50_centavos, (edited ) do games w "Games are meant to be engaging, not exhausting": Lead dev on promising Soulslike RPG says

I’m a huge fan of Souls-like games but I have no problem with a difficulty slider IF the hardest setting rewards you with exclusive achievements or access to bonus areas in the game. It would be funny if the easiest setting replaces bosses with cute animals or something. Like kill this baby deer or play on hard mode.

Also, IMO if a game is not challenging it becomes incredibly boring after a few hours. I tried playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and put it on the hardest setting and it was like mild sauce from Taco Bell. Only bonus was a tiny more XP.

@sneezycat@sopuli.xyz avatar

What some devs don’t understand is the “reward” on soulslikes is actually learning the boss itself. Figuring out the parrying patterns in Sekiro feels very good, it’s not about what happens after beating the boss.

What makes it challenging and not punishing is having telegraphed moves, windows to punish the boss, and clear animation that shows you how to dodge/parry, without bullshit hitboxes.

lime,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

i feel like that was done better in sonic frontiers than in any soulslike

Would you recommend DRG? I’ve heard some good things, but never tried it.

Delphia,

I asked a friend who plays it and he says its good with randoms, but great if you have a crew you regularly game with.

Sciaphobia,

It’s great either way. It has a good community.

omarfw,

I’d say try it out to see if you like the gun mechanics and movement/different classes. If you do then you’ll love the game even more when you get to the higher difficulties. If it’s not your thing, you can refund on steam if still under 2 hours of playtime.

isyasad,
@isyasad@lemmy.world avatar

I personally would not recommend it. I’ve played ~20 hours with friends. Despite being a simple co-op game, it has these seasonal battle passes and multiple currencies that I would expect from something like Fortnite / Call of Duty / pay-to-win mobile games. That’s mostly an aesthetic gripe because it doesn’t directly effect the gameplay, but I’m not a huge fan of the gameplay either. Combat is really imprecise/messy, which I’m sure is the point but I can’t get behind it. May be worth to play with friends, but I would not recommend it solo at all. What I can say I really like though is the 3D map tool for the randomly generated caves 🤤 beautiful 3D map

RowRowRowYourBot,

All of those “currencies” are free. There is no paid way to get them. You just have to change which season you are playing to get that season’s scrip. There is no pay to win. There is merely paid skin packs

isyasad,
@isyasad@lemmy.world avatar

Yes I know. I just mean that the multiple currencies is something I didn’t like and is a downside of the game for me. Not only because I think they are not fun to collect, but because they aesthetically remind me of pay-to-win currencies and it’s a slight ick. As they say in the article, they deliberately copy elements from other games to add to their own. That’s cool, but I don’t like the specific things they copied: battle passes and multiple-currency upgrade trees.

RowRowRowYourBot,

Ok but your objection is based on vibes then and run counter to the actual facts at hand so why misrepresent what Ghost Ship is doing? Their passes and scrip have nothing in common with paid for battle passes (which aren’t examples of pay to win either)

Abnorc,

To be fair, a game giving you bad vibes is a valid reason not to play it. It’s not a piece of software developed with a practical task in mind.

isyasad,
@isyasad@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t believe I misrepresented anything, I never said that the currencies or battle passes were paid. OC asked if people would recommend, and I think I wouldn’t recommend because I didn’t enjoy it and I described the reasons I didn’t enjoy it, which as I said in my comment were aesthetic complaints (rather than monetary or gameplay or anything).

My objection is based on vibes because I think vibes and aesthetics and artistic direction are important to me, and those are the grounds on which I don’t like Deep Rock Galactic

JoeBidenUnofficial,

It’s extremely fun with friends. I’ve got probably 100+ hours in it
