Now we need a Windows handheld mode for these Steam Deck competitors

No, what we need is for game companies to stop using DRM that blocks Linux.

Incredible Mark Hamill Cult Classic Lands On 4K Blu-Ray This Summer

I come to Lemmy to get away from frustratingly annoying titles that intentionally miss out a key piece of information - in this case the title of the film or TV show the article is about - to trick people into loading the page, only to find is a film they’ve already seen or don’t care about or whatever.

I just ignore headlines like this now and move on, don’t give them what they want - clicks.

inkican,

Would that you contributed actual content to the community instead of only complaints about the content.

Tar_alcaran,

Fwiw, they’re right.

Rule 3: Mutual Learning and Collaboration
The federated internet community should serve as a platform for mutual learning and collaboration among its members. Encourage individuals to share their knowledge, insights, and experiences related to science fiction. Foster a culture of curiosity and intellectual growth, where members can engage in constructive dialogues and learn from each other. By embracing diverse perspectives and promoting collaboration, the community can become a vibrant hub for science fiction enthusiasts to expand their understanding of the genre.

Pronell,

I get ya, I hadn’t even really noticed since the movie was named in the box below.

But it is frustrating, and I do tend to block communities and posters that seem like advertisements.

Exactly. Content creators gotta eat too, so there are levels of 'please click on this so I can eat' that I'm prepared to accept in the landscape of 2024 digital information exchanges.

I’ve played the first two hours on PS Plus and it’s excellent so far. I’m actually considering purchasing it separately on Steam just so I can play it on the Steam Deck as well 👀

redsol2,

I went straight for the Steam Deck version and it is a perfect handheld game. The fights don't drag on too long, and the suspend / resume is really nice to have.

yoriaiko, do gaming w Valve Reveals New Hardware Lineup: A Controller, Compact Gaming PC, and VR-Ready Headset

Box looks nice…

I see many flaws on many sides, some doesn’t bother me at all (like it is very mid tier spec machine, I don’t expect hdmi2.1 for over 60hz, but still a flaw), then lack of ability to add extra hard drive, dvd, floppy (/s on this one) is slightly bothering me, and no output set for home audio 5.1+ set is already a thing for me (probably can extract them from hdmi port, but, uhm, buying extra adapters?, no fun).

Much depends on price, some said to expect 500€, which I could probably, maybe… some expect 700€+ while pointing economy trends, which is much nupe imho.

GammaGames,

Definitely agree, relying on sd cards for expanding storage sucks

TehPers,

From what I’ve seen, the hard drive at least looks replaceable, so it should be possible to upgrade it I believe.

HER0,
@HER0@beehaw.org avatar

There are a bunch of compromises for the (unknown) price point and form factor. It is clearly targeting the “relatively accessible living room gaming PC” market. At the same time, I don’t think this is as restrictive as your comment makes it seem.

I don’t expect hdmi2.1 for over 60hz, but still a flaw

This is likely a legal limitation rather than a technical one, but the included DisplayPort can do 4k at 120 Hz. Most games probably won’t be able to actually run with good performance with those settings.

then lack of ability to add extra hard drive, dvd, floppy (/s on this one)

The SSD is user replaceable, and other drives can be added through USB (even floppy drives). Micro SD is also a bit clever in that you can use the same cards for the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame.

no output set for home audio 5.1+ set is already a thing for me

Back to USB, it has more connectivity than consoles, and works with more devices (because it is really just a PC). This includes USB audio interfaces and such if you need audio options outside of HDMI.

yoriaiko,

It may be ok for building whole new rig, cube as base, and then add all next based on cube possibilities - don’t buy weak monitor, but only one with audio in it, don’t buy extra ssd, buy sd card, solid usb hub or at least wireless kb/m (personally I like wires here)… unless some may have non compatibile monitor without audio, few ssd and many wired tools already.

Also doubt my full size mounted dvd and even hdd (aye, sata2 hdd!, magnetic discs!), would be so easily Woah just googled, we have usb to sata adapters, and not even that expensive (10-20€), still would need few, boosting total price.

Im absolutely buying the steam controller whenever its available, I have the original steam controller and I love it so looking at this I feel like ill also love it :3

I’ll probrally also buy the Steam Frame when I’m able to afford it… Eventually :,3

TemporalSoup,

I love the feel of the steam deck’s built in controller, so I’m 100% getting a steam controller to use the steam deck in docked mode

kittenzrulz123,

I dont personally own a steam deck, I dont really travel a lot and whenever I do I have a tiny RG35XXSP :3

(Considering Valve is heavily improving Fex and general Arm support I might just get a Retroid flip 2)

Crotaro, do gaming w Valve Reveals New Hardware Lineup: A Controller, Compact Gaming PC, and VR-Ready Headset

The Steam Controller is almost going to be a sure buy from me, but I am very unsure about the new iteration of VR controllers. I can’t find anything confirming or denying that they have full finger tracking (instead of only thumb/index). The full and intuitive finger tracking of the Valve Index Knuckles is just so nice and for me pretty much necessary in multiplayer stuff like VRChat

GammaGames,

Linus Tech Tips confirmed that the handles have capacitive sensors so they still track each finger

Crotaro,

Thank you for that info. I read about the capacitive sensor, but I was not quite sure if that would apply for each finger. That is going to make VR sign language much easier (or keep it at least as easy as with the current Index controller)

_Lory98_, do gaming w Valve Reveals New Hardware Lineup: A Controller, Compact Gaming PC, and VR-Ready Headset

Very interested in the controller, I might get it day one.

Kind of curious about the Frame. I’m not really convinced VR is going anywhere, but a fully wireless setup that can run PCVR games seems interesting, if it’s not ridiculously expensive like the Index. Also Valve contributing to FEX could be useful for playing games on those Android emulators like Retroid’s, AYN’s etc.

Those new controllers look like EXACTLY what I’ve been hoping for.

The Index controllers are great, unless your hands are big. Then they’re barely usable imo.

The best fit for me was the OG Oculus Touch controller, and these look like they stole everything about those that worked.

stargazingpenguin, do gaming w Valve Reveals New Hardware Lineup: A Controller, Compact Gaming PC, and VR-Ready Headset

That controller will be an easy buy for me! I don’t do a lot of couch gaming because I don’t like standard controllers, but I’ll happily use one of these. The Steam Machine and VR headset aren’t that exciting to me, but I’m sure there’s a market for them.

HubertManne, do gaming w Valve Reveals New Hardware Lineup: A Controller, Compact Gaming PC, and VR-Ready Headset

darn. I really wanted the vr to conentrate on external screen and being light as possible. working with the deck or pc. sounds like its trying to be a device in itself.

NuXCOM_90Percent,

It is both. Standalone device but also designed to communicate with a PC via a USB dongle. So lower resource games “just work” and you take advantage of your PC (or Steam Machine…) for the heftier stuff. Which is as close to the “norm” as it gets in VR these days (although the facebooks connect over WLAN)

HubertManne,

yeah but it means heavier than needed because of what had to be put in capability to run games. I would rather they make a belt holder for the deck and keep the headset as light as possible. Also would prefer something that can be worn with glasses rather than getting special lenses.

NuXCOM_90Percent,

I would also like a fanny pack form factor (great for spare batteries too) but it’s “just” a snapdragon. The actual chip is likely nothing compared to the displays and battery

It definitely doesn’t look glasses friendly but that is also a solved problem these days. Many of the online glasses companies directly sell them and they just push on rather than needing to buy the lenses and print a mount and then remove the old lenses and blah. My ex and I both wear glasses and we never had a problem swapping out on the facebook quest or whatever.

HER0,
@HER0@beehaw.org avatar

It says that it can accommodate glasses up to 140mm wide.

HubertManne,

oh thanks. Although that seems kinda small but its possible I have a big head.
