What have you been playing!?

I’ve been tinkering with my Steam Deck almost since I got it a month ago. I mostly use it hooked up to the TV with a PS5 controller. I have a problem with sticking to one game and tend to jump around a lot between them, but here are ones I can remember playing in the last week or so for a decent amount of time:

Fantasy Life i: Not usually a fan of cozy games - I like more direction - so this one looked right up my ally with an actual plot to follow along. I got about 10 hours in until the game started blocking my progress by requiring I find buddies to advance the story. I’m not interested in having to look up where they can be found, so I dropped it. It was a fun 10 hours, though!

Broforce: Bought it for the 3rd time on Steam so I could access player-made levels, something not available on other platforms. I love this game! Wish they’d make a sequel or even an official expansion.

Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie: I recently decided to test out 360 emulation on the Deck via Xenia and remembered these 2 were on it with better framerates and camera control than the originals. Pretty funny to use a 360 emulator to play N64 games, but until the fanmade PC ports are available it’s the best way to play them.

My next tinker project is seeing if I can get the DS models and texture mod for Mario 64 EX working. I have a thing where I prefer to play official upgrades to graphics when possible, which is why I’m use the 3DS textures for Ocarina of Time on the PC port.

Romkslrqusz,

How’s performance with Banjo Kazooie via Xenia on Steam Deck?

It’s been decompiled but I have yet to see an actual Windows / Linux port yet

samus12345,

100% perfect for both BK and BT, from what I’ve played. I also played through Beautiful Katamari and it seemed perfect as well aside from the katamari not showing up in the King’s hand in the results screen. Oddly, this exact same issue happens in Katamari Forever via the RPCS3 emulator as well.

Untitled Goose Game is wicked awesome

In Conan Exiles (a very flawed game), you can harvest your own corpse.

For years this was MAP16 (“suburbs”) of Doom 2, but over the years I’ve grown to appreciate the more chaotic/abstract levels.

See also TEETH.WAD (“express elevator to hell”) from the master levels. Punishing and IMO tedious.

What a pleasant surprise to find this on lemmy! Excellent write up as always.

If the tutorial makes you buy things, it’s obviously expecting you to pay to win 🤷

Im back to Balatro after losing all interest in it. Just got a couple more decks to unlock until I can decide I’ve completed it. I obviously never will (get gold tokens on all the jokers? Lolno) but it will feel like a good point to stop with no regrets.

I got that Blue Prince bug where your data secretly stops saving twice now. I read it’s been fixed but playing the game has a tension behind it now that’s discouraging me from investing too much in it, psychologically speaking, and also I’m hesitant to play anything else on the PlayStation because closing the Blue Prince application on it risks being hit by the bug again if it does still exist.

Which all seems like the universe telling me it’s time to try Baldur’s Gate 3 Honour Mode again with these new subclasses. I’ve made a dragonborn barbarian, planning for him to be a giant that specializes in punching, playing him arrogant and naive. Lae’zel and Wyll feel like good companions for that temperament but I don’t know who my third should be. Maybe stick with a hireling until I get one of the druids? He’s too insecure to tolerate Shadowheart or Gale. Astarion or Karlach would mean having to reclass somebody so there’d be a support role on the team and reclassing the origins never sits well with me.

UPDATE: Things did not go well at the goblin camp.

Ive been playing some VRising after a friend wanted to replay it.
Then i brought my brother into it (he plays singleplayer) and needed to hold back myself with suggestions because he was simply happy with slaying some skeletons in the tutorial area

Killing floor 1/2, fps zombie horde killing.

Another doot for Remnant, really enjoyed the odd universe and two player coop.

Battlefront 2 multi player for mindless star wars pew pew fun.

thermal_shock,

You recommended killing floor before L4D2? Interesting.

Hasn’t someone already suggested L4D2? I only played the first and was pretty offended when they promptly released the second and expected me to pay for it. They did eventually turn around and give it away but IIRC it was under a year from release and they expected me to buy a whole other game.

unit327,

I was a bit cheesed too, but it’s been umpteen billion years since then and you can grab l4d2 for about $2. It’s time to let go.

I was playing Mafia, and it’s a pretty cool game, then suddenly they drop in an F1 racing level where you need to grab first place against a bunch of AIs that never make a mistake.

The worst bit is, in the previous mission you did a lot of work to sabotage the rival’s car ahead of the race. So you shouldn’t even need to drive all that well to win against him, but it just forgets that.

I just never beat the race, so the game came to a halt for me.

HK65,

shouldn’t even need to drive all that well to win against him, but it just forgets that.

His car breaks down right at the start, which ironically makes the mission harder as you have to dodge the car as everyone passes it.

That said, the hard part was not tipping over, you could get quite a few places by just not giving a shit and flying over the chicane after the first turn.

grrgyle,

That’s like game design 101 – if you’re introducing a new gameplay paradigm that isn’t part of the core experience, make it really really easy.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but I recall the Warthog escape sequence at the end of Halo getting this right. It felt epic, but was actually very doable based on the limited driving skills required by rest of the game.

pinball_wizard,

That’s why many of us are so fond of the warthog. Many games at the time introduced a vehicle and suddenly the game is ludicrously hard (… That fucking BattleToad battle bike…). But the Warthog is introduced as a helpful aid, and then it actually does it’s job with minimal fuss.

Oh that’s so kind of you to say!! Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

_hovi_, do games w What are some good cooperative shooters? Hidden gems?

Darktide is fire, it’s a left 4 dead style game (horde shooter?). If you want 2d shooters, I really enjoyed Broforce and Huntdown (that one’s a real gem)
