FergleFFergleson, do gaming w System76 or Framework for Linux gaming

I haven’t used any Framework systems, so I can’t really give a proper comparison. I have owned two S76 laptops, a now-ancient Lemur Pro I bought back in 2017, and just recently, a Pangolin I just picked up a few weeks ago. I haven’t really had a chance to put the Pangolin through its paces, but it does have AMD-based 3-d acceleration built in. The old Lemur (and the new lemurs) only have basic Intel graphics.

I was able to use my old Lemur for some very light gaming. I think last time I was traveling, I was able to play Football Manager and Fallout Shelter quite successfully, but Lord of the Rings Online was just a bit beyond its capabilities. I would assume that Skyrim would definitely be beyond the Lemur’s reach.

It looks like the F13 does have some amount of built-in 3d acceleration, so just looking at specs I would expect it to do better than the Lemur. Lemur’s got a slightly larger display, but neither are very big. The rest of the specs look like they can vary quite broadly depending on your order so that makes the rest a bit hard to compare fairly.

Like I said, I’ve never even seen a Framework laptop in person, so I can’t give a hands-on comparison. I can say that I’ve been very pleased with my experience with System 76. If you’re looking at S76, consider the Pangolin. It’s only a little bit larger than the Lemur, the price is pretty close, and it comes with more capabilities.

edit-to-add: Whatever you pick, I hope you will come back and tell us how it turned out.

Icarus,

You sound like me lol. I had a lemur first snd upgraded to a pangolin a few years ago. I do a lot of gaming on my pangolin, but mostly indie games. Per Aspera, parkitect, firewatch, stuff like that. It will play Valheim but it’s a little choppy on low.

I expect the latest version of the pangolin would run better. Not only is it a much improved APU, it looks like it has vastly improved cooling.

Borderlands Borderlands 2

  • all the DLC’s.

Then if you’re still interested, Borderlands Pre-sequel

And if you find yourself really into the series, Borderlands 3

MK8D would be perfect if only battle mode wasn’t such a mess. If they could just take MK64 battle mode and implement it exactly as is in MK8D, it would be perfection.

zenpocalypse,

64 was the last good battle mode, imo. I don’t know why they removed levels big enough to hide in.

Viri4thus, (edited ) do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

Brother, picking on your example, Avowed had the gall to charge 11€ more than KCD2 while offering a facsimile of what it promised while KCD2 improved upon their past game in every way. The polarisation stems from a game published by one of the richest companies in the world and in production for over 6y delivering a mediocre experience (at best) when compared to CHEAPER offerings that do much more. In truth, it’s not polarisation, it’s requiring a modicum of quality for your money. I returned it because I was advertised an Obsidian RPG and got a linear shooter with barely any choices and performance issues that would not be foreign in a mobile marketplace. That’s the future gamepass brings, slop. Luckily, there’s US indie, Asian and European developers making good games, KCD2 or BG3 being such examples. Shit, even Lords of the Fallen is a better experience than Avowed as people were delivered the experience that was promised in the promotional materials at less than 70€.

Edit: Dragon Age was technically well executed, but, again, as an RPG, it had little to offer. Would be another game perfect for a mobile app store. The total sales of that game and predicted sales of avowed confirm as much, it’s shovelware capitalising on a franchise name to drive sales while having no craft or passion behind it. If you read the reviews for avowed, the overwhelming majority of the thumbs up reviews complain the game is not worth the price of admission and it’s a mid game at best.

pfjarschel,

I am sorry, but it seems your Avowed is different from the one I am playing. I agree with your comment, but I am enjoying Avowed like I haven’t enjoyed any game in years! And barely any choices? Really? I just finished the first area (not the tutorial), and there were LOTS of meaningful choices! But speaking of the tutorial, there was a choice there that impacted certain future interactions. The R is definitely there in this RPG. I haven’t played a game where even the little choices matter as much as in this game!

nyctre, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

The only problem is that people are idiots, especially online. Go to any comment section and you’ll find people angry at the content, no matter what the content is. And you’re taking them seriously, for some reason. Laugh at them and move on, no more polarization problem. As you’ve said, 77% of people enjoyed avowed. Probably even more, as people are a lot more likely to leave a bad review than a good one.

Elevator7009sAlt, do games w Gaming has a polarization problem

Makes me appreciate reviews that are able to give pros and cons to the game, and the ones that are able to say an opinion between “best game ever” and “absolute trash”. Which I still often see on the Steam reviews, usually voted as one of the Most Helpful!

I’m personally not interested in any of the games, but I wish the best of luck to the people that are hoping to win one! I like this, it’s better than letting the codes go to waste

slaacaa, (edited ) do games w From the trailer of Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014)

Loved the new games, though Youngblood was the weakest. I wish Arkane would have made more of them, instead of being forced to do that live service shit Redfall.

Edit: I mixed up the studios, the new WE games were developed by Machinegames, Arkane only helped with Youngblood.

MilitantAtheist,

Wat.

bestagon,

I do wish we had more of these but they were made by machinegames who just put out the new Indiana Jones game which has been favourably received. I’ve been meaning to check it out

slaacaa,

Ah, you’re right I mixed them up. Arkane only helped with Youngblood a bit. Yes, the Indiana Jones game was really good, I loved it

newthrowaway20, do gaming w Is there an in depth analysis of what's going on in the gaming industry?

It’s really tough to pin it down to just one thing… to me, it’s a perfect storm. This is anecdotal, of course. But companies made several bad decisions in a row. They seemed to think growth during COVID was normal and would continue annually. Some companies bought a bunch of other companies thinking this would be a new big push in gaming. Embracer group comes to mind.

Other companies decided to divert their very talented developers away from the types of games they were so good at developing, and towards what the business wanted to chase as far as revenue opportunities. Gatcha riddled live service games. Ubisoft, WB, Sony, EA, Microsoft, practically everyone chased this trend. Some put everything into it. Others dipped their toes. Some pulled back before it cost them hundreds of millions. Some spent hundreds of millions and got nothing to show for it. Some companies lost a lot of talent when the really good developers left to go work on stuff they care about. Others had no choice but to cut the business down to the bone because of all the money and time they wasted chasing a trend.

The government also started raising interest rates, which makes it more expensive to borrow money. So a lot of companies aren’t willing to spend the kinda money they used to, not without a guaranteed return. So now you will see more consolidation and less risk in the types of games being made by AAA studios.

So yea. I think there’s several factors, all could have been planned for with actual solid management, but that’s not the kind of management running these companies right now.

Those are all mature systems, and I’d say that rankings for games on old systems are reasonably consensus at this point. You can just search for “best system whatever games” and get lists, look for games in genres you like; I’ve had luck doing that in the past, as that avoids a lot of the chaff.

I personally probably have gone back and played Super Metroid the most on the SNES, but depends on what one likes. If you like RPGs from that era, different set of games.

For this ranking of SNES games, as an example:

www.ign.com/lists/top-100-snes-games/92

  1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  2. Chrono Trigger
  3. Super Metroid
  4. Final Fantasy VI
  5. Super Mario World

I’d say that probably those games are going to cluster near the top of any list of SNES games.

sleepybisexual,

Thanks

ramble81, do games w Are modern Final Fantasy games bad?

FF games are like pizza. They’re all a round, baked dish, but you can have them so many ways and everyone will have their opinions. For example

  • I thought 10 was linear and boring and only played it once
  • I really liked 10-2 and the entire dress sphere concept as well as being open to go where you wanted.
  • I absolutely loved 12, as it had amazing lore and call backs to literally every other FF game in the series. A lot of people hated on the battle system but the magic of the strategy was figuring out the best gambit combinations
  • 13 had a beautiful story and graphics, but was way too linear and then suddenly opened up in the end game. Would have made a better movie or visual novel
  • 13-2 is one of my all time favorites in how it was non-linear, expanded on what happened with the 13 cast, who I liked, and also had secret endings
  • 13-3 is good, but it becomes one massive fetch quest. However it has New Game+ which is perfect for curb stomping baddies
  • 15 was one I thought I wasn’t going to like (an FF with cell phones?!) but oddly they pulled it off well and it wasn’t too bad. The villain was frankly one of the best in any FF series. Voice acting was top notch and the DLC really fleshed it out (you could argue it should have been part of the core)
  • Playing 16 right now, and hopes it was Square returning to its roots, but frankly…… it’s not an FF. The pacing is all over the place, and they randomly throw in an FF theme or name in a way like it’s saying “see! We’re a final fantasy game!” This is the first game that I really thought they lost their way on

I haven’t played 11 and 14 but I figured that’s my $0.02 when everyone has their own favorite toppings.

SolidShake, do games w How the hell is there not a Green Arrow video game?

It would have to be very short to be any good I think. And have a really good story.

But yeah just unlock different arrow types throughout the game and you’re good. Half finished.
