Never played Fable 2 myself but I can do nothing but applaud the commitment at 316 days, utterly putting my bitch ass to shame. Love these posts <3 Keep 'em coming
There’s definitely been some days that were rough just because i’d be busy all day that day or just couldn’t decide what to play lol. I think the latter definitely shows in some of my posts where i just kind of spent an hour dicking around in a game with no clear goal. And not to mention i’m a student who’s fortunate enough to not have to pay rent so i have a lot of free time. So don’t be too hard on yourself
It’s what I expected overall. Some people loved it, others say it’s more like an alternate gamemode that reuses way too many assets. I think I’ll wait for a sale before jumping in with friends. Looks fun, but $40/person is a bit much.
Curious to hear what the criteria for “masterpiece” is, otherwise I think it is just peoples’ subjective opinion of what makes a great game that they also think others might agree about being a great game. Genuinely curious, interested in discussion, not saying this to shut down any of the answers here.
Historically a masterpiece has been a (or the) work that demonstrates an artist is capable of utilizing their medium to its fullest extent, i.e. it has been mastered. Per ye olde Wiki:
Historically, a “masterpiece” was a work of a very high standard produced by an apprentice to obtain full membership, as a “master”, of a guild or academy in various areas of the visual arts and crafts.
In that light, I’d say the best qualified would be games that completely utilized the capabilities of the platform they were designed for or, perhaps of interest to more people, expanded what everyone thought could be done with those systems. Games which were furthermore well polished and complete, and did not have much room for improvement taking into account the constraints they had to work with at the time. (For instance: No duh we could make Mario 64 run at a higher framerate and have better textures to look nicer on hardware now. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t arguably a masterpiece of its time, on the system it was on.) This doesn’t just have to be technical stuff – It could be the way the game used storytelling, its gameplay mechanics, or anything else.
Then Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom belong to that category - run smoothly as fuck on one of the lamest consoles there is, and are beautiful and complex.
Spyro and Crash trilogies on the PSX, as well as the Quake 2 port, would definitely merit being called technical masterpieces
On the original Xbox, Phantom Dust would fit that bill, despite being a commercial failure at the time. The tldr is that you create a collection of spells (attacks, traps, dodges, curses, buffs) and try to grab them and the “mana” during the real time duels, in order to beat your opponents. Terrain is semi destructible and you have to take into consideration the trajectory of your spells - www.xbox.com/games/store/…/9PCDNBHR11MR
I do think the Spyro games are probably the absolute best of the collect-a-thon genre. Joyful and fun and with fun puzzles. I am worried I am too biased to say it though since I have 120%/100%/117% beat the games multiple multiple multiple times.
Zresztą sam Mentzen zdaje sobie z tego sprawę dlatego niechętnie go popiera.
Hasn’t someone already suggested L4D2? I only played the first and was pretty offended when they promptly released the second and expected me to pay for it. They did eventually turn around and give it away but IIRC it was under a year from release and they expected me to buy a whole other game.
Blue Prince! I’ve been trucking away with this for a while because it’s very possible to play using the controller while holding a baby - no quick reflexes required! I’ve hit a bit of a wall with progress in it though and have reached a point where it feels more like luck than skill/puzzle-solving is needed to tackle my current objective.
I really wish I was better with puzzle games. Even the world’s darling - Portal - is a bit beyond me. Despite having a brain that should enjoy puzzle games…they never catch on for me!
Congratulations on the baby, I hope you get a little more time to enjoy both holding and gaming soon enough :)
I feel like making that comment earlier broke my run of bad luck and I “completed” the game. (There’s obviously a tonne of additional puzzles to work out, but I think I might take a break from this for now!)
Just to preface, I have bias as a person who got a steam deck day 1 and love it with no plans of getting a switch 2 .
That being said it’s definitely on a per-person basis. The big differences are how comfortable you are with small “tinkering” because things work on the steam deck but small adjustments aren’t uncommon and how okay you are with not having Nintendo games like Mario Kart.
If you’re cool with both of those then I’d say Steam Deck! Otherwise waiting for the switch 2 is probably the move!
The only reason you should buy a Switch is if you have no self respect, don’t give a shit about being in an abusive relationship with Nintendo, and don’t care about sending thousands of dollars to a company that hates you to get an artificially limited device, and absolutely MUST play Nintendo first-party games, in the intended fashion.
The Deck is such a better device in nearly every way.
