Moonguide, do gaming w Looking for coop RPGs
  1. Remnant is a coop soulslike shooter, if that’s up your alley. Fun bosses, some puzzles with unique rewards if you get the clues (some are really hard and you’ll definitely end up looking up guides for most of them), and build variety is okay. Haven’t played Remnant 1, but Remnant 2 is fun.
  2. Outward is an indie open world RPG with survival mechanics. With mods, you can play with more than 2 people. It’s janky, but it has an old school approach to game design that feels refreshing. For instance, the ingame map is just a map, not a gps. You orient yourself with the on-screen compass and landmarks off in the distance. The levelling system is completely non-standard compared to modern rpgs, as it is classless, has skill trees (with passives and actives), and uses money, not XP, to level. So every red cent counts. The story is honestly not impressive. Not because of the presentation, but because there really isn’t much there. If you end up playing this, is because the exploration and builds are fun. Having to deal with environmental threats while you’re low on resources (e.g: can’t see but you ran out of lantern oil, freezing but don’t have a campfire, starving or dehydrated but have no food) adds a lot to the game, because combat is not easy until you get a good build going.
  3. Valheim could work if you’re up for it. Though not much of an RPG, it can be played like one with the right mods and world settings. You can tone down the survival aspects and increase the combat aspects. Nearly 0 story though. My only gripe in this regard with the game is that build variety only comes online in the latter half of the available content. Before Mistlands, everyone is either melee or range. Once you get Eitr, you can combine melee or range with magic. With mods though, you can get classes and unique enemies to hunt down.
  4. Same as before, Project Zomboid can be played like an RPG with the right mods, but you won’t find much of a story besides the ones you shape yourself in-game. There’s a lot to building a character, and you will get attached to them since infection is certain death, and then you have to roll up a new character. B42 just released on the unstable branch, but is only single player atm. B41 can be played multiplayer, and it has thousands of mods for you to tailor the experience. I’ve had a lot of fun playing on private servers with my friends. I treat it as a survival game, and they treat it as an RPG.
  5. Return to Moria might work? It’s not much of an RPG, but it has a loose story to egg you on. No builds, however.
  6. Wasteland 3, though its similar to BG3 I think. Haven’t played it online, and I think it’s limited to 2 people. Build variety is up there though, and the story is great.

Not really much to offer, now that I realize. If BG3 wasn’t your cup of tea you might not have a lot to choose from.

Outward

Outward looks interesting. I’m not completely sold on it because of the open-endedness and survival elements, but we might try it as it’s cheap.

Edit: we tried it for ~8h and liked the start but didn’t really get anything (combat, progression, etc.), so we dropped it as we weren’t enjoying it.

That’s steam but the games I’ve put the most time into are:

Minecraft, must be over 10k hours.

Halo 1, 2, 3 and Reach, pretty sure over 10k hours combined.

There’s surely some game I’m forgetting right now, just woke up.

There are also several mobile games I must have put thousands of hours into over the years.

caut_R, do games w What did everyone grab during the Steam Winter Sale?

A bunch of EA games they‘re practically giving away considering the 90% discounts (Mass Effect etc.), and a bunch of indie puzzle games (Cats Organized Neatly etc.) as well as some steeply discounted Devolver Digital games (Hotline Miami 2 etc.).

I think I paid the price of one full price game (70 bucks nowadays) for like 20+ titles, but also yet again lost the battle of the ratio of games purchased vs games played this year… Damn you, Gaben!

Now I‘ll just wait for Monster Hunter Wilds which is easily my most anticipated game at the moment and probably the first triple-A game I‘ll be getting on launch since Elden Ring.

Same here.

FYI, Monster Hunter Wilds is available on Green Man Gaming and Fanatical for -18%, taking its price down to a normal triple A price of 57€.

iAmTheTot,

Even cheaper if you have max discount at Humble.

Tombstone is out! Skilling MMO (So think runescape) with a retro-future wild west type theme and pixel gfx that can be played from steam, its own client (available on itch), a browser, or android. Runs on anything, obscenely fast update pace, developers on discord respond to issues dummy fast. I’m currently playing tombstone.

Project: Gorgon is my forever home MMO, I’m not super active currently but am online for events and such. I’ve found it to be the only title on the market that feels like a world you join instead of a game you log in.

FFXIV because I’m trans and I think it’s a requirement at that point.

illi, do games w What MMORPG are you playing, and why?

GW2 is probably one of the best MMOs out there, but it just no longer grabs me as it used to. I play sometimes, but in bursts. As soon as I run out of story content, I just fall off.

Lately I’ve played Corepunk and quite enjoyed it but it has ways to go still. And the servers are down for like a week now due to tech issues.

Last MMO that really grabed me long term in the last fee years was New World, but I feel the devs just don’t know what game they want. And there was huge content drought with them focusing on launching console version. I’m playing with an idea of getting the expac and make a leap of faith that it has a future because I’d really love that.

Also keeping my eye on Soulframe. It’s (or is supposed to be) a MMO lite but it looks like something that could definitely scratch an itch for me. Still in pre-alpha but I like what they are aiming for and it already plays quite well.

SilverShark, do gaming w What is your Game of the Year?

Deadlock

It brought me a new multi-player experience, something to share with friends, and it is super fun. I also don’t get toxicity out of it.

@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

I tried it when I first got an invite to it. Invited as many friends as I could. I think we ran with it for a few days and just couldnt stick with it. I personally couldnt tell what I was supposed to be doing, or if I was even helping or just being a weight to my team?

SilverShark,

I had to watch a few videos to understand what I was suppose to do. Really didn’t get it at the start. But I think they also improved the interface and such.

dino,

Deadlock is nice, but the toxicity is the same as in every moba like teamgame, therefore I stopped playing it because I felt the time I spent playing were not enjoyable to me. Its sad because the game is so promising and delivers Valve typical polish which rivals triple AAA garbage.

SilverShark,

I think that the fact I keep voice audio muted helps me not to get to much toxicity D:

dino,

But then your coordination will be lacking.

IsThisAnAI, do games w My recent experiences with big budget AAA after years of avoidance

Anytime I see someone bitching about the writing in Diablo I know they are just looking to be mad.

Diablos writing and story has been garbage and unimportant for 35 years. It’s a slot machine.

Diablo hasn’t changed since D2. It’s just gotten quicker to do hundreds of runs.

Probably a bit harsh in this post, op seems to mean it, but they clearly don’t represent the general audience.

_sideffect,

He’s not bitching, but it sounds like you are.

Tetris is Russian propaganda that teaches children doing good work is pointless as it will just be taken away and you’ll be forced to do it again until you do it half assed.
