schamppu,

Huh, interesting. Could you send me the email you signed up with to contact@walkscape.app and at which point the beta application fails? Is it while you try to submit the fully written application, or even before that?

arality,

Emailed! It fails while trying to submit a fully written application.

For the best graphics, you’ll likely want to go with the PC version and a hi-res mod such as this

www.nexusmods.com/…/9

But if you plan on playing on console, the OG Xbox had a slightly better CPU and more RAM than the PS2 and the GCN.

DdCno1,

Faster hardware doesn’t always translate to better graphics. The PS2 is the second-slowest system of its generation, just ahead of the Dreamcast, but it’s capable of unique graphical effects that other systems and even the PC cannot easily replicate due to the PS2’s unique ability to quickly process huge numbers of transparent textures; only recent PC hardware can replicate this through shaders; it was impossible at the time. That’s why all ports of GTA San Andreas look dull and lack the complex effects of the PS2 original, even if they are better in some regards (like shadows). Mods can replicate this sometimes, but in case of San Andreas, this was only achieved in recent years - and I’m not aware of any other game having received the same treatment by modders.

This also applies to the Sands of Time trilogy. PS2 versions are better looking than other console versions and the PC ports. The best experience with it is through emulation. You get the high frame rates and resolution of the PC version, but the unique atmospheric effects that are only present on Sony’s system. Higher-res textures alone can not make up for this, let alone the ones you linked to, which just deliver ugly AI upscaling noise instead of actual detail.

bullshitter,

I already have a special place for ps2 in my heart. Furthermore all the prince games were developed firstly for ps2 and then ported to other platforms. I will try them on pcsx2.

Any settings guide for pcsx2 and reshade

Hi! Sorry if this has been answered, but this uses the phone’s built-in pedometer, right? So, if you’re running you’d get more steps/hr (without triggering anti-cheat)? Thanks! Looking forward to trying it!

schamppu,

Yes, indeed! Currently supporting only phone’s built-im pedometer, and wearable support is coming when Google fixes Health Connect.

Running is fine, and you indeed get better steps/hr due to the increased cadence.

Do you want emulate the games or play on real hardware?

bullshitter,

Emulation

thingsiplay,

I can’t tell you which version is the best for you (and your hardware). The first thing I would lookup if the particular version for the emulator is working well (have in mind, the reports are not always up to date): Dolphin for GameCube, PCSX2 for Playstation 2 and Xemu for Xbox.

DdCno1, (edited )

Xemu is by far the least desirable option. Immense hardware requirements and relatively limited compatibility. It’s a miracle it’s functional at all. I would only use it for games that you cannot play through any other means - so the small number of Xbox exclusives that were never ported to other systems and don’t work through backwards compatibility on newer Xbox consoles. Midtown Madness 3 comes to mind. I’m glad I finally got to experience this forgotten game by the Battlefield developers - but it was barely playable at 640x480 on a Ryzen 5 5600. The experience reminded me of very early PS2 emulation and not in a good way.

PCSX2 is usually decent and has made immense strides in recent months, but it usually runs multiplatform games worse than Dolphin, which is the gold standard for console emulation. However, not all ports of games are better on Gamecube. While the console is more powerful than the PS2, the limited amount of storage on the system’s proprietary discs resulted in quite a few compromised ports (edit: and the PS2 has a few hardware tricks up its sleeve that no other system of the time can replicate, particularly in the effects department). Still, it’s usually the best course of action to try Gamecube/Wii emulation first and resort to PS2 emulation only if you’re noticing downgrades. There’s also the little issue with PS2 games that some rely on the controller’s analog face buttons for certain mechanics (e.g. short jumps, long jumps, throttle/brake, certain attacks), which are not present on newer controllers most people are likely to be using. Sometimes this can be rebound reasonably well, e.g. to a modern controller’s triggers, but not always.

All of the above also applies to AetherSX2/NetherSX2 and the Android port of Dolphin, by the way. On mobile devices in particular, the lower hardware requirements of Dolphin are worth keeping in mind - although lower-end devices are likely to struggle with Gamecube and Wii games anyway. This is not an issue on PC anymore; even basic PCs from over a decade ago will run Dolphin flawlessly, whereas PCSX2 can be punishing even on modern CPUs with certain games at higher resolutions. The original PS2 version of Shadow of the Colossus for example is so demanding that it’s actually a better idea to emulating the slightly enhanced PS3 port through RPCS3 instead.

For a good overview over current emulators, I highly recommend this wiki: emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

thingsiplay,

Nice write up. It depends on you hardware too (if its strong enough). Some games might be best played on Xbox, so it makes sense to try Xemu. I personally prefer Dolphin and PS2, because they are integrated into RetroArch as cores (in Linux). At least he is looking for the best graphics, and that should be the Xbox versions. But I didn’t try the Prince of Persia games yet.

bullshitter,

If asked to choose between dolphin or pcsx2 , what would be your choices?

thingsiplay,

This depends on the hardware you are playing on, the version of the emulator and the specific game. I don’t have any experience with Prince of Persia games, so cannot make a recommendation. I personally play on RetroArch, which means the PCSX2 core is renamed to LPSX2 and is a little bit lacking behind the standalone emulator. So I would tend to use Dolphin for Gamecube emulation instead. But if you are using standalone emulators, then it might be different story.

When researching the web, people seem to talk about the PS2 versions of the Trilogy being the best. So based on that loose info, I would probably tend to recommend that one. But check out compatibility for each game in the links I gave you.

Wizardry was great. I’ll never understand how I lived in one of those ultra religious eighties homes that wouldn’t let me play D&D but wizardry, Ultima, and bards tale were just fine.

HubertManne,

they had no idea what that computer stuff was.

psycho_driver,

They had no idea what any of it was. “Ultra religious” usually means they just believed their leaders when they were told something was bad or good.

HubertManne,

It amazes me the stuff that flys under the radar with them. Close to the time they were boycotting the last temptation of christ piers anthony wrote a book where a woman takes over for god.

Malgas, do gaming w Best way to play the original Prince of Persia Trilogy?

I’d just like to point out, for the record, that that isn’t the original trilogy. Sands of Time is the fifth Prince of Persia game.

lemmyvore,

Isn’t it fourth?

Malgas,

Gah, you’re right. I had it that way at first, but then glanced down a list to check my count and they listed 2002’s Harem Adventures as a separate game even though it’s just the Java phone port of the original.

averyminya, do gaming w Game Dependency Graph of The Curse of Monkey Island (LucasArts, 1997)

I need to get started on this for my game. It will probably be much simpler, but that’s why I should get started now!

xilliah,

Yeah or don’t make it

averyminya,

That’s true, it could be procrastinative instead of actually working on the things that should be done…

I think it would come down to when and how I work on it, I can’t really spend 5-15 minutes on various downtimes learning coding or doing the art, but I could probably whip up an interaction chart and add to it with that short amount of time

xilliah,

Why force yourself to start something big and complicated? Just enjoy your life lol and do stuff that comes to you and feels right. Maybe that’s a game, but no need to force it.

averyminya,

Oh it does :) it’s a passion project that gives me some opportunities to make music and sound effects (something I like to do but don’t always record and save my work), and similarly I love making art but having a strong vision for what I want to make can get difficult.

But I have a really strong vision for the game in its entirety, which helps with the direction for my art and music :) I just need to build the pieces (obviously, easier said than done!) and so far it’s been enjoyable. Difficult, but understandable.

Basically, I save so many notes and other junk, but I rarely save my creative endeavors. This will be a good way for me to not only reach that goal, but to also create a game that is somewhat unique and that would be really fun to play :D

DdCno1,

Just market your game as “retro hard” and you can get away with anything. /s

averyminya,

Wait, how did you know!?

Jokes aside, it sort of is? I’m going for a Smash Melee physics movement meets Revita map design, so retro hard isn’t really too far off!

The game looks great! I really like that you don’t rely on GPS, because of privacy.

schamppu,

Thank you! Privacy is definitely the biggest concern, but also GPS requires apps to be opened to register anything, and it kills the battery quite quickly (and requires active internet connection).

MoonlightFox,

By the way, I got such a good impression that I became a BMAC contributor, looking forward to testing it!

schamppu,

Thank you so much for supporting the development! You should’ve received an email that has instructions to link your BMAC on your account page. When you link your account there, you should receive download instructions either almost immediately (sometimes might take couple of hours for our automated system, but usually faster).

Happy walking, and remember to stay hydrated ❤️

MoonlightFox,

I have the game installed now 😀 I like that all steps go towards a goal of some sort.

Found a tiny typo with the name for one of the hairstyles. If you search through your codebase for “adn bun” you will find it. Its probably supposed to say “and bun” 😊

schamppu,

Thanks for letting me know, and welcome! ❤️

merc,
@merc@sh.itjust.works avatar

Does GPS really require an internet connection? I know it uses the radio, which kills the battery, but AFAIK you can get GPS without Internet access. For example, I’ve downloaded offline areas for Google Maps and have tracked my location that way, while traveling in countries where I didn’t have a SIM allowing me to access the Internet.

schamppu,

Not necessarily, but in order to use map data, you’ll pretty much need it. This is why all of the GPS games require a connection, as they’ll download map data and cache your current surrounding areas

ThePowerOfGeek, do games w RuneScape is increasing their membership price by 50%, and Reddit is trying to censor it
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Not a big surprise on the Huffman Shitshow. A lot of subs over there are insanely toxic. But yeah, a ban for that? That’s crazy.

I didn’t even know RuneScape had a subscription! I think I briefly played it about 15 years ago. Good game, I just don’t have the time to play it, unfortunately. I assume you play? What’s the community like over there?

I just looked up their pricing and it makes sense for them to have an optional subscription. $14 a month is in line with other similar games (e.g. wow). Would be nice if they had a couple of tiers of subscription. Maybe a $7 and a $14. But that might complicate things. How much can you do on the free mode?

ImplyingImplications,

My brother has been playing for years and has a few paid accounts. Here’s how he explained it to me. All paid accounts had their prices locked in until you cancelled them. His first, and main, account had a price of $5 a month because he first bought it 15 years ago.

There are also “ironman” modes that exist in the main game. It’s an option at character creation that will restrict your account from trading with other players forcing you to obtain all items on your own instead of just buying them from the trade board. Since you need to make a new character, this is also another payment. My brother has two ironman accounts.

There are “leagues” which are new temporary servers where the rules are different and XP gain is incredibly fast. You’re given tasks to complete before the “league” ends and are awarded cosmetic items based on how much you complete. This requires its own paid account to play. My brother has one of these too.

In total he spent about $20 a month on the game for his various accounts. This change to the subscription will set every single one of his subscriptions to $14 a month raising his monthly payment to something like $56 a month which is ridiculous. He plans on ending all of his subscriptions since there is now no incentive to stay subscribed (the price is no longer locked in). So my brother, a long time and devoted customer, will play the game less and give less money because Jagex is hoping most people like him won’t go through the hassle of unsubscribing.

He, and lots of other long time players, are hoping that Jagex does what other MMOs do and allow multiple accounts for one subscription price.

pimento64,

You don’t need a separate account to play Leagues or any other temporary game modes. You are correct however that you do need to pay a separate membership for each character unless you’re okay with that character only being able to do F2P activities.

Nythos,

Which is absolutely wild and I’ve no idea how Jagex (🦀) have gotten away with it for so long

ThePowerOfGeek,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Oh wow, that’s a huge monthly increase. Thanks for explaining the pricing system.

Omegamanthethird,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

20 years ago it was $5 and maybe like 10% of skills were locked behind it. I noticed very little impact from it. But I’m pretty sure end game stuff was locked. IIRC, dragon armor was locked and may have been the best armor.

I’d be surprised if that general model changed significantly.

wizardbeard,

The model hasn’t changed, but as development of new content has continued, 95% of new content is subscription only.

That said, I can’t speak for Runescape “proper” aka Runescape 3, the current “main” version. I’ve heard a lot of concerning things about all sorts of mobile game style predatory shit going on there.

I’ve only played Runescape 2, now called “Old School Runescape”, which is a fork of the game from (I think) 2006.

Essentially, right around that time they completely overhauled combat, stat progression, and a bunch of other stuff, and called it Runescape 3. A lot of people didn’t like the changes and started hosting custom servers from before the changes.

Eventually they made an official version, called it Old School Runescape, and have been developing it side by side with “normal” Runescape since.

Old School isn’t predatory in my opinion. Outside of occasional “leagues” on special servers with specific challenges applied, there’s no FOMO. The f2p game has plenty of content enjoyable on its own. The subscription just unlocks a mountain of more content, including alternative ways to level up through early game. Technically you can advance faster with a subscription, but that’s due to having more options to turn into an over optimized plan, not some shit exp multiplier or something.

vodka,

Look up YouTube videos on fastest max level on RS3. You can get all your levels to max level with micro transaction loot boxes in a very very short time for a very very large amount of money.

Valmond,

Runescape is nice and all but it’s not WoW IMO.

That's not the original trilogy. The first Prince of Persia was 1989. But all I can tell you is that Sands of Time was awesome on the PS2. I don't imagine it would've felt as satisfying without a controller if you didn't have one on the PC back in the day. The combat mechanics seemed made for it.

I remember from an interview that the first JRPG, Dragon Quest, was heavily inspired by Wizardry (as with other CRPGs of the time). Most others copied that design, including Final Fantasy, so in many ways we can thank Greenberg for helping lay the groundwork for virtually all RPGs, not just CRPGs.
