I am pretty sure in Witcher 3 I missed like half of the combat features - flasks, signs, rolling lol.

I think it’s great that you’ve fostered a discussion where no one’s really angry, but there’s definitely confusion. I have a rough idea as to what you’re referring to, but without concrete examples of games, this seems more like a well-intended but uninformed rant that needed more time in the oven.

For some reason sequels are extra eager to walk into this trap, thinking the energy field and the virus are what made the original so compelling, so this time let’s have the story revolve around 3 energy fields and 8 viruses.

Side note, but this perfectly describes why I liked the first John Wick, where the world of the assassins is an interesting background element, and hated the sequels which are exclusively about the assassins and their weird rules and traditions

Saving this post because it’s right up my alley so now I have many new games to check out. Project Zomboid is still going strong for us, but here are some others that our group has enjoyed:

Heave Ho: super crude 2D graphics, but absolutely hilarious gameplay

The Ascent: beautiful cyberpunk-themed isometric shooter

Broforce: very entertaining pixel-art 2D platformer/shooter - we played this through to the end, which is rare for us

Overcooked: very entertaining 3D game, not sure what I would even call the genre - a “work” game?

Unrailed: similar to uncooked, but a different kind of “work”

SWAT 4: old 3D FPS, but still good

I didn’t realize metal gear rising had a block/parry mechanic. The tutorial talks about countering enemy blows with your own barrage of attacks so I figured I just had to stagger them and steal health regularly. Monsoon is the first fight with no minions to heal off of, so I got stuck and finally checked online.

Not a game but some of the stories here remind me of the time I discovered I could draw stuff on the screen with Omicron Basic on my Atari ST and I painstakingly entered every square by hand dozens of times to make squares move across the screen…until days later I discovered the magic of the for loop. I must have been maybe 10 or so at the time.

Kotor, but mostly the second one. With the restored content it’s so much better than anything else that it feels unfair.

Skies of Arcadia. Two words: sky pirates. Coupled together with a beautiful overworld filled with hidden discoveries, charming characters, fun ship combat, and excellent music. You can’t go wrong with either the original Dreamcast version (higher quality music, VMU minigames) or the Legends remastering on the Gamecube (an additional story quest, less frequent random encounters - the original is somewhat relentless with these).

No experience with it, but…

  • Founded in 2018
  • Copyright date says 2020
  • Still says “Join as a Founder!” in 2023
  • Appears to be tied up in crypto nonsense

Signs point to untrustworthy.

As an 8 year old without much of a guide at all, I was a very proud Magician on MapleStory… one who dealt violence with her trusty magic wands and staves… physically.

I didn’t understand what skills and hotkeys were until several years down the line when reading comprehension and life experience improved.

plopo, do gaming w Could we build a Pokémon trading community on Lemmy? An alternative to /r/pokemontrades and /r/svexchange

I don’t play much Pokémon anymore, but r/pokemontrades was the reason I was able to finish a living dex for gens 7 and 8, so I would love to see that community flourish here too. It’d be a great resource, especially when Lemmy eventually gets big enough to have a sizable Pokémon community.

„Robinsons Requiem“, available on GoG.

It’s a survival horror first person rpg with a semi realistic health system. It’s creepy and hard and so goddamn good. I’m am actually surprised that it gets mentioned so rarely because I would not know of any other earlier game with those now so ubiquitous survival mechanics.

Ultima Underworld 1 and 2. These are ancient RPG games going right back to the dawn of PC gaming. The first one was the first PC game with a true 3D world where you could look up and down and there were two slopes rather than just steps. The control scheme takes a little getting used to as it was before WSAD+mouse look had become established. Spells are made by combining runes which you find about the place. It also has things like repairable weapons and armour, the need to sleep and eat as well as the normal RPG stats and levels.

This is fairly recent, but I was playing through a good chunk of Zelda TotK after the training area without the glider. I thought going towards the castle was supposed to be towards the end, so I wound up crawling up the great plateau to the old temple of time hoping to find it.

I was trying to play without spoilers, but luckily a friend set me in the right direction
