E3 2004! The HYPEST

We met Reggie, who’s about kicking ass and taking names.

And the DS is revealed…and it COMES OUT THAT YEAR?! Whaaaaaa

I was so hyped. I started saving my pennies right away.

The multiplayer experience was unbelievable. No cables, no square box thing to play more than 2 players. And you didn’t even need multiple copies of the game! Just all play Mario Kart!

The thumb strap was a neat idea, but not the easiest in practice. Though I did find it great for aiming in the Metroid FPS game, much better than the stylus.

And OF COURSE it was backwards compatible!

Loved it. Beautiful machine. I still have 2 DS Lites that work.

Does Fortnite count? Playing against cracked out 10 year olds, who build a fortification faster than you can say “fortification” is stressful as fuck

Don’t know if it counts: Factorio on deathworld. I thought it’s impossible until I saw dosh beating it and Mods even worse than that.

I don’t even play the game and I panic while watching

pipariturbiini, do gaming w What are the scariest games you've played?

It’s gotta be Penumbra: The Black Plague and Amnesia: The Dark Descent back when I played them 12 years ago. Not many games have created the same amount of tension for me while playing.

by tradition we don’t talk about the game and instead tell people to play Outer Wilds

    Megaman_EXE,

Outer Wilds is probably one of my top 5

It’s probably my favorite game that I’ve played in the past decade

N0x0n, do gaming w What are the scariest games you've played?

F.E.A.R (the first one only) was absolutely scary and psychologically nerve wrecking…

The multiplayer was amazing though, the nail gun was something else !

    Megaman_EXE,

The nail gun was so satisfying! The AI was cool! The way they would flank was pretty good for the time! The light and shadows were really great. Lots of tension mixed with the gun fights. In a lot of ways, Condemned reminds me of it, too.

    N0x0n,

The AI was cool! The way they would flank was pretty good for the time!

So truee ! Yeah I remember that was something really unique to FEAR ! Never had seen a similar AI in other games :/

    Megaman_EXE,

Yeah now that you mention it, there really haven’t been too many releases similar to FEARs gameplay style since then. It was a very unique combo of fps and horror. I would love to see someone tackle that style again

    djsoren19,

It’s a shame that I’m a quivering pussy, because I think the combat against the replicants in FEAR fucking rules. The shooting feels awesome, slow-mo karate is awesome, the game feels awesome to play.

…and then the game goes quiet after the shooting stops, and it delivers some of the spookiest atmosphere I’ve experienced even after two decades of age. A single light fixture moves suddenly, showing the shadow of something just behind me, and I jump out of my skin and have to take a break from playing.

And it was the only one able to fully hold a Game Boy Advance cartridge!

    vaionko,

Could’t the Lite too? Or is my memory this bad?

Ah, I skipped over the fully part

This was my early high school days. My friend and I would play Mario 64 DS wirelessly across the hall because we were in different classes but close enough for a WiFi connection. Great times. Also, the Metroid demo included with the console was a fun multiplayer experience.

The friggin’ dogs in Resident Evil.

I have a kind of funny story about that. I was too young to be playing RE when it came out, but that didn’t stop me from sneaking it out of my dad’s collection of grownup games to try it anyway.

So there’s this well known jump scare, probably in the first fifteen minutes as you say where you’re running down a hallway and suddenly some dogs jump through these glass windows. I screamed, fumbled the controller, and was eaten by dogs. Might have been the first jump scare of my life.

So I hadn’t hit a save point, so you have to start the game over. So I decide to just leave the mansion through the front door instead of going out that way. And you get a cutscene where a dog jumps through the door and you have to wrestle it away.

I still haven’t played the game since.

But my wife and I are a big fan of the series, so eventually we decided to marathon them on the condition that she plays RE1. She’s playing the remake and goes into the room where the dogs jump through the windows and I’m holding my breath waiting for it to happen. Only it doesn’t.

So I’m a little disappointed, but I figure it’s a remake so maybe they’re switching things up a bit and going to put the jump scare somewhere else in the mansion.

Sooner or later you have to backtrack through that corridor though, and on like the third time going through this “safe” corridor the dogs jump through the window. She screams, fumbles the controller, and is eaten by dogs.

Seven-year-old me was vindicated that my adult wife also got punked and I’m not alone.

it’s the dogs! i love dogs, but having them jump through the window destroyed me.

shirro, (edited ) do astronomy w Elon Musk destroys astronomy

I have not heard a car for a few hours. Not even the rumble of traffic in the distance and I can see the night sky without light pollution. It is a very privileged experience in some ways and while it has its advantages we are measurably disadvantaged in most human development metrics: health, education, income etc compared to people living in urban areas of our own country. The disadvantage is real and pops up everywhere from cancer survivability to suicide rates. Equitable internet access is more important than many people appreciate. If we can improve services to everyone AND protect radio astronomy that is a worthy goal.

    jmcs,

Fiber is dirty cheap, just saying. If you consider externalities, much cheaper than starlink. You just want us to subsidise your lifestyle.

    palitu,

Maybe they are farmers? Apparently they have to live quote remote.

I have family that use it as there is nothing else available

Edit: fiber is cheap, but the land and labour required is not.

    ShepherdPie,

How does fiber being cheap help them if no ISP is willing to dig miles and miles of trenches to lay it and connect to their home? I live in the middle of suburbia and don’t have access to fiber.

Your comment about subsidizing their lifestyle doesn’t really make sense. What are you subsidizing exactly? This tech is also useful in poorer countries that don’t have the infrastructure at all.

chloyster, do gaming w let's discuss: non major systems

I have a bit of an obsession with handheld systems. I’ve always been on the lookout for cool handhelds. Probably started with some leapfrog devices I had when I was a kid.

Some of the more interesting ones include a piboy. A raspberry pi 4 stuffed into a gameboy dmg like shell to emulate games. More recently I’ve been very into my analogue Pocket. I play a ton of stuff on that as it can accurately recreate a ton of older systems. I’m also quite interested in getting a playdate at some point, but have yet to justify it.

I also have some modded GBC and GBA systems. With USB c charging and nicer screens

    sleepybisexual,

    Nice :3

I do software emulation too. I used to want a GBA as a kid, little me would have loved emulation :3

    GammaGames,

I haven’t thought about my leapfrog in years! Was a fun little thing.

The Piboy looks great! I’ll have to put it on a list of gift ideas for my partner

    chloyster,

Fair warning. If you are looking at the piboy by experimental pi, their website has been mostly down for months now. They seem to have abandoned the project :(

    GammaGames,

Dang, maybe I’ll go for the Analogue Pocket instead. Thanks for the tip!

    sleepybisexual,

That’s an FPGA thing. Youneed carts for it. If you into ROMs I can recommend most new ambernic stuff

    GammaGames,

Now those are fancy! I really like the joystick support.

Related, do you have any recs for an SP-style emulation handheld? I love the clamshell for tossing in my backpack

merthyr1831, do games w Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread

We had to convince my brother in law (13yo) to not spend his birthday money of £85 on Genshin impact skins. Kids are fucked by advertising man

    Buttflapper,

Report that shit to the EU or your government. At least in Europe they care…

    merthyr1831,

China has announced a ban on Gacha game mechanics (and lootboxes, predatory discounts, and gambling) which should hopefully ripple out to Europe and the US soon.

A lot of these mechanics were adapted from the Chinese gaming market and I think the same will likely happen in the reverse.

    BruceTwarzen,

I’m no stranger to people paying for skins and all, but when i first heard that kids want vbucks as a Christmas gift my stomach kinda turned.

Baikal i Radicale to proste do postawienia serwery CalDAV.
