Ultimately, the world is not a grid. So while grids may be great for pure strategy games like XCom (and I really enjoyed XCom, not knocking it at all), I think a lot of people would say that for more story-focused games like RPGs, they break the immersion. Thus, BG3 (which I’m also really enjoying) does not use one. Neither do any of the party-based RPGs that I can think of off the top of my head. For me personally, it depends on the game. I am perfectly happy without one in BG3. But I enjoyed having one for XCom, and more recently for Warhammer 40k Mechanicus. I would offer that as a suggestion if you are looking for a gridded turn-based strategy game.
I’m really confused as to why everybody’s saying BG3 doesn’t have a grid. It’s not visible, but it’s there. BG3 is obviously built around a grid of hexagonal prisms as its basic building block and it shows in everything, including combat and level design. They’ve done a great job with graphics and animations to make them smooth and make it seem like the grid is not there, but it is.
Of course the ground itself needs some kind of abstraction, there is no actual computing in the real numbers. Thats not the kind of grid OP is talking about though, they mean a grid where a character uses up a single tile.
I always hate it when certain characters and quests in games don’t have as many options as other ones. It feels bad when you can’t save or help a character you really like, especially if there’s 100% a way it would work in the story, if it had been written in.
It seems to happen more often with animals and beasts. I really like dragons too, so it sucks that the only dragon isn’t able to be saved. I haven’t played BG3 yet. I remember being able to help a dragon in Divinity II, and not too far into the game either. If you haven’t played that, you could give it a try.
I feel you. I REALLY feel you. I’d say more to commiserate, but everything I’ve got to say on the matter is already up there, and while I’m upset, I don’t want to rant everyone else into being frustrated. Best of luck to you finding someone you can save in your games?
I could, but after getting burned so badly in BG3, I’m very much feeling cautious about touching anything else this studio’s made.

There is at least one other dragon that you can talk to who doesn’t have a bad ending. Just because one got a raw deal in the game doesn’t mean the rest did.
People don’t typically do dragons well in general tbh. Even when dragons are secondary to the plot, opting for wyverns the no-armed beasts and calling them dragons. It sort of hurts me inside.
But I agree I want more genuine dragons in my media.
(Side note, I haven’t read the OP as to not spoil myself so for all I know OP could be arguing the same thing so sorry for the redundant point if that’s the case.)
Libreoffice is the most atrociously structured piece of software I ever encountered. not only is the UI absolutely dated and god awful trash, it can fuck up microsoft office formatted documents. i possess a special hate for it since it decided to crap out on me when I REALLY positively needed it.
And it has VR too! I think NMS and having actual Daggerfall doesn’t leave me any room to particularly care about Starfield. I don’t get the hype at all.
The NMS gameplay is really only a tiny part of Starfield. It’s an RPG. Like, an actual, proper RPG, with tons of actual quests. If you were only interested in the NMS part, flying from planet to planet to scan wildlife and gather resources, sure, you don’t need Starfield, NMS will do ya just fine, but there is a fuckton more to the game than that.
I actually like exploring the universe, but I’ve been pretty disappointed from what I’ve seen so far. They tried to add space-sim elements to it, but did a half-assed job at it. To make things worse, the planets are mostly barren and not worth exploring either.
In saying that, it is a Bethesda gene, so I’m expecting some beefy mods that add more content and immersiveness to the game, and once that’s done, I may consider buying it when it goes on sale.
In the meantime, I’m really looking forward to finally playing Cyberpunk as it was meant to be, with the new Phantom Liberty DLC.
Finally finishing gears of War 5. Bloody good gears game, bit I had a big break in playing and can’t quite remember what the story was. Still enjoying it.
Surprisingly, Baldur’s Gate 3. I absolutely love D&D, but I tried playing through the Pathfinder video games, Pillars of Eternity, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and nothing stuck with me. I just wasn’t a fan of the CRPG genre, despite me playing in-person tabletop RPGs multiple times a week.
I bought BG3 thinking I probably wouldn’t get hooked, but I didn’t want to miss out when literally every one of my friends is playing it. Well, I am absolutely hooked and have 40 hours in the game and will likely do multiple playthroughs, and I kind of “get” the genre now. I know PoE, PF, or DOS2 may not be as good, but I feel a lot more confident at the prospect of playing them now.
I’m in the same boat, I’ve been playing Death Stranding and a few other indie games once every weekend or two… or three. Now every one of my friends and coworkers are talking about hundreds of hours in BG3, I’ve bought and downloaded it last night to catch up.
The genre itself appeals to me, but the amount of time and concentration it takes me to get into a game nowadays, maybe this gets a kick start.
Fallout 3 was one. I had just transferred to a new college and was dorming. Several of the guys were playing FO3, so I decided to get it, even though I knew almost nothing about FO games. But I knew it’d be something to talk about with people. And it worked, even though I didn’t get that far into the game. Made friends; some that 15yrs later I still talk to on occasion. As far as the game itself, I haven’t played another FO since; just generally not my kinda game.
My gaming buddies now, who I’ve known them for several years, have the attention span of goldfish, so I’ve largely stopped FOMO games purchases. I can’t keep spending money on games they’ll play for a week or two, or less. Though if it appears there’s some longevity, then maybe I’ll jump in. Barotrauma and Project Zomboid are a couple where the FOMO eventually won out, but it did pay off. We’ve sunk hundreds of hours into each game over the last 2-3yrs.
Fallout 1 and 2 are 2D isometric turn based games, while 3 and later move to a first person perspective so you might enjoy the classics… Unless you just don’t enjoy the setting - in which case fair enough.
Really? I do enjoy turn-based games, so that’s good to know! It’s definitely the first-person perspective that I think I just don’t care for. The post-nuclear apocalypse setting I’m into. Looking at some pics, I’m kinda reminded of Shadowrun Returns, which I enjoyed. Is that an apt comparison?
Not a bad comparison but fallout 1-2 are decades ago so quite a jump in graphics and stuff. Huge classic fallout fan, and I enjoyed shadowrun so you might like it
Fallout 1 & 2 are absolutely phenomenal classic games, but they are very old school (they’re 90’s releases, after all) so you have to be up for that. Not just graphically, but game design too. If you’re okay with that, they’re really worthwhile experiences, and I might even prefer Fallout 2 over unmodded New Vegas.
As is usually the case with games from this era, look for the unofficial patch and the Restoration Project, too.
