Just started animal well myself. Seems extremely solid so far. Excited to see what else the game has in store. Also has me excited to see what else big mode releases in the future if this is the bar of what they’ll publish.

Some more modern run and guns - Blazing Chrome and Huntdown. Both of those are a good time.

I really like Gunlocked, which is a more short-form and arcadey roguelite shmup

Sunset Riders is a great run and gun.

Shmups, I’m only a beginner but I have a few suggestions:

  • ESP Ra.De. - somewhat slower bullet hell with pretty interesting scoring, the “Psi” re-release has a lot of useful QoL features.
  • Espgaluda II - you could think of it as a successor to the former, it has refined gameplay and recent releases have great QoL features. Somewhat faster paced bullet hell?
  • Ikaruga / Radiant Silvergun - Although these are two very different games, they have entirely different mechanisms to most other shmups. Ikaruga feels like a “puzzle” game a lot of the time, while Radiant Silvergun has some light RPG elements. Both are somewhat hard to get into imo.
  • Dodonpachi Resurrection - great starting point re bullet hells, the recent re-release offers a ton of QoL features and the game itself has interesting scoring / gameplay. Soundtrack is awesome.
  • Raiden IV - Super biased, but I love the soundstrack. Pretty great, if simple, game otherwise.

I have many more shmups in my backlog (Ketsui, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Battle Garegga, Rolling Gunner, etc) which I’m sure I could recommend, but seeing as I haven’t played them first hand yet… I’ll leave it there for now.

I made it about 3/4ths of the way through my second play of Lies of P before I decided I had to take a mental sanity break. I don't think I've ever played a game that has made me so angry and frustrated because I can't change the core trajectory of the story.
::: spoiler .
After learning the lore in the first run and actually hearing the King of Puppet's dialogue during his boss fight this time, I feel extra bad that I complained so much about it in my first playthrough. Geppetto can go fuck himself. I am begging this game to let me side with Romeo.
:::

To fill the Lies of P void, I decided to take another go at We Happy Few. I started a playthrough a few years ago and finished the first act, Arthur's story, but never got around to the rest of the game. I don't feel like I got to fully immerse myself in the world last time, so I'm going to take my time this round.

Diablo 4: Season 4 started this week, and I'm going with a fire/ice based sorcerer build. I'm liking the changes that they made to crafting and modifying weapons, and I've already made it to the paragon boards. I also got one of my friends playing with me this season with a similar build, so it'll be extra fun.

stewie410,

If you’d be interested in another souls-like, I can recommend Remnant 2 (or the previous title) – though, not the same combat style by any means.

buedi,

Diablo 4 for me too. I did not play much last season, but this one I enjoy a lot. I like the changes regarding loot and crafting and I see myself finally using the Aspects now that they are not consumed, but can be pulled from the codex as often as I want. Previously I saved my good rolled aspects “for later”… and later was usually beyond my playtime for a season :-)

Oh yeah, this 100%. I did the same thing, where I'd save aspects for when I'd get a "better" piece of armor/weapon. I'm enjoying a much cleaner stash.

Aren’t game purchases enforceable contracts? i.e. “I give you money. You give me game that works.” ? (I’m avoiding words like “good” because that’s subjective and it gets into a whole different discussion)

I played the fuck out of Cannon Spike on Dreamcast

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannon_Spike

But I was a huge SmashTV fan back in teh day. I still play it when I see a cabinet.

I tried to get into the mindset to get good at Ikaruga but I just cannot invest that kinda time.

Dreamcast had so many good shmups.

Guardian Legends and 1942.

simple, do games w [QUESTION] What is the most realistic-looking game that can also run on Linux distros?

Cyberpunk 2077, probably. The game maxed out will destroy your graphics card but the graphics are undoubtedly gorgeous.

Horizon Forbidden West also has really good graphics.

otacon239,

I second Horizon. There are moments where I’m convinced the graphics are pre-rendered when cranked to the max.

I second Cyberpunk, ray tracing enabled or not. That game truly captures a realistic dystopian world in the best way possible.

emeralddawn45,

I just started playing ghost of tsushima on my steam deck and it’s fucking gorgeous even on low settings, so I assume that would be pretty beautiful maxed out too.

I do. Never really got into it but I thought it was a cool idea!

ISOmorph, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of May 19th

I just finished Immortals of Aveum. I really liked the story. Felt like an early 2000 science fiction action movie. It’s gorgeous looking but the shooting didn’t have enough oomph to be really fun, so I stopped playing after the credits rolled. Didn’t feel the need to 100% it.

Donut,

I will look it up but please feel free to elaborate, it sounds cool.

ISOmorph,

It has a lot of Doom-like exploration for new gear and other goodies. Also a handful optional bosses which are pretty hard to beat. But the shooting revolves around basically 3 weapon types (magic types in this case): a DMR, an SMG and a shotgun. The variations thereof don’t feel different enough and the feedback lacks kick, so the shooting doesn’t feel very meaty. It’s still solid enough, but the story is definitely what carried me through the 20ish hours of the game.

ConstableJelly,

Interesting. I heard the main character is insufferable. Would you disagree or is the story good in spite of him?

ISOmorph,

The characters are great. It’s not BG3 obviously, but there’s enough depth there. Like I said, it’s on the level of a goofy action movie plot from 20 years ago. No ones gonna get an oscar but you’ll be entertained nonetheless.

I was playing Rise of the Tomb Raider pretty much non-stop, a lot of fun. Gorgeous game and runs really well on my potato but…hehe Epic Games did something and now ROTR along with a lot of other games just appear as “OS Unsupported” in my library :) and after a little searching on the other site turns out everyone is having the same issue.

Oh well, atleast Epic Games gave away DRM free versions of those games so I can still play my copy

Just beat Slay the Princess twice. Wow, really lived up to the hype for me. Excellent writing and art. Excellent... Format and pacing for a visual novel with a lot of different choices. The themes it explores are incredibly interesting and varied.

I heartily recommend it to anyone who enjoys a VN with a mysteriously intriguing story.
