Or it’s saying “you’re a loser living with your parents playing video games at 45.”

The ambiguity is part of the subversion.

Edit: I’m enumerating how it could be interpreted, not saying I have a problem with it!

grue,

Whaddya mean, "J"RPG? That’s literally Morrowind you’re describing!

grue,

(of the license to use the software, I know we don’t own “the game”).

No, you don’t own the copyright, but you do own your individual copy. Don’t fall for the “licensed, not sold” self-serving propaganda.

grue,

In the biz, they call that “replayability.”

grue,

Is this about digital downloads vs. physical media for video games, like most seem to be assuming, or is it about video games vs. board games?

grue,

Villains don’t count; they’re supposed to be hated.

grue,

Let’s not pretend that the law somehow requires Nintendo to threaten and bully Garry’s Mod, because that just isn’t the case.

grue,

LTT just did a “console tier list” video with a bit on what went wrong with the Saturn.

I think one of the biggest problems was how Sega decided to split their market between the Saturn and the 32X. They should’ve focused their efforts on making one good console & games catalog instead of two mediocre ones.

grue,

Always has been a blatant motherfucking lie, you mean.

Saying you don’t own a game you bought is exactly as batshit insane as saying you don’t own a paper book you bought. We wouldn’t put up with this shit for that, so we shouldn’t put up with it for games either!

Stop letting the copyright cartel steal our property rights and drive us into serfdom.

grue,

No, it’s not the same; not even slightly! Youtube Music is a monthly subscription, whereas Ubisoft presents the transaction as a sale. Ubisoft has no right to gatekeep your property away from you.

grue,

We need to show up at the FTC chair’s house with torches and pitchforks until he agrees to start enforcing the Doctrine of First Sale again.

grue,

You own the copy

…which is the entirety of the important part. Once the store sells you the copy, that’s it: the copryight holder has no more right whatsoever to say what gets done to that copy. In particular, it does not have the right to dictate to you when, where, or how you may use your property, e.g. by requiring an Internet connection for the fucking thing to run!

The copyright holder’s temporary monopoly privilege should not be allowed to supersede or infringe upon the copy owner’s actual property rights in even the slightest way. Full stop, end of. The publisher’s business model is its own damn problem, not the customer’s. If it relies on destroying the latter’s rights in order to achieve profitability, the business deserves to fail!

grue,

I would, and did!

grue,

We failed to hold the line at the goddamn horse armor.

Caltech Researchers Find Evidence of a Real Ninth Planet (astrobiology.nasa.gov) angielski

Caltech researchers have found evidence of a giant planet tracing a bizarre, highly elongated orbit in the outer solar system. The object, which the researchers have nicknamed Planet Nine, has a mass about 10 times that of Earth and orbits about 20 times farther from the sun on average than does Neptune (which orbits the sun at...

grue,

This hypothetical planet was cooler when it was called “Planet X.”

grue,

I mean, if someone says “Doom and Wolfenstein” without specifying “Doom Eternal” and “Wolfenstein: Youngblood” (which I had to look up, BTW), I’m thinking of Id.

grue,

Why the quotes in the title? That is more legitimately taking a screenshot than saving the framebuffer is!

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world) angielski

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

grue,

They didn’t need updates because they gave you the whole game, (usually) more-or-less bug-free, the first time!

grue,

IMO Morrowind did fast travel best: they integrated it into the world, kept it limited (fixed origins/destinations, plus mark/recall) and gave it an appropriate cost (time, gold, magicka, and/or effort needed to discover transit locations).

grue,

The key differences are that Morrowind does not have microtransactions/paid mods, and does have the Elder Scrolls Construction set – so I’m pretty sure you could mod in a less limited fast travel mechanism if you really wanted.

So you prefer playing as another gender? (quanticfoundry.com) angielski

Well, as a guy, I’ve been asked multiple times why I systematically play games female characters in video games, to the point of skipping a game if I’m forced to pay a male one, with a few exceptions (I really liked Albus from Troubleshooters for example). Whenever there’s romance in a game, I’ll also take the F/F route....

grue,

The point is that the difference between 1^st^ person view and 3^rd^ person view matters.

grue,

It feels like the developer and the publisher not being on the same page to me.

grue,

…what? Morrowind isn’t multiplayer!

(Unless you’re talking about this mod for OpenMW, which is relatively new.)

grue,

The fact that we’re not willing to pay the relative pittance (compared to lots of other shit in the Federal budget) to rebuild Arecibo is criminal.

I got to play Terra Nil, and here is my two cents on it (lemmy.world) angielski

This year I was recommended Terra Nil, a “reverse city builder” as the developer Free Lives call it in the store page. From screenshots and what gameplay I did see of it, my mind raced to games like SimCity 3000 and the potential of destroying a run down, or decaying city and returning it to nature....

grue,

MineClone

The top DDG search result for that (on crazygames . com) looks like a rip-off or something. I’m going to assume the thing you mean to recommend is MineClone2, a mod for MineTest, which is the most prominent Free Software Minecraft-style game.

grue,

Here are some good Free Software games that cost nothing at all:

  • Hedgewars
  • Mindustry
  • Shattered Pixel Dungeon
  • Minetest (with MineClone2 mod)
  • 0 A.D.
  • SuperTuxKart
  • Freeciv
  • FlightGear
  • Battle for Wesnoth
grue,

Relevant article: reclaimdemocracy.org/corporate-accountability-his…

TL;DR: the way it was supposed to work is that entities that wanted limited liability were granted corporate charters in exchange for providing some large, tangible public benefit (and very much not just “shareholder value”, BTW). This post-Dodge v. Ford Motor Co. world where corporations are essentially mandated to be sociopathic is an absolute 100% perversion of what incorporation was meant to be for!

grue,

Nice, I just

spoilergot the achievement.

grue,

Anything to avoid making Half Life 3, I guess.

grue,

Reminder: EULAs are contracts of adhesion (among other problems) and are therefore legally bunk.

grue,

That’s on Valve, not the regulators. Valve is perfectly free to lower the prices EU-wide to what the citizens of the poorer EU countries can afford.

grue,

🤷 Still not the regulator’s fault.

grue,

Sure, in the same way it’s the government’s “fault” for removing your option to, say, run a protection racket, or agree to a contract of indentured servitude, or sell baby formula with melamine in it. There are lots of abusive or exploitative business models that the government removes your option to engage in! And the government is right to do it.

grue,

The cost of producing something doesn’t change depending on who you sell it to. Charging anything beyond cost + some reasonable profit margin is unethical profiteering.

grue,

is there anything I as a non-developer can do about it?

Choose to play games written in Godot instead.
