GolGolarion, do gaming w What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

I need a high-fantasy dungeon crawl… in the immersive sim genre.

Lowbird,

Oh shit. I’m sad we don’t have this now.

Hellebert,

I’ve wondered the same thing for a while. Procedural dungeons in fully 3D in a fantasy setting would be great and it’s weird that it doesn’t exist at least as a modern game.

Wayfinder kinda is like this but I’m not sure if it’ll fully scratch that itch in the end.

MJBrune,

That’s what the Ultima Underworld series was. Underworld Ascendant was supposed to be a modern revival. Sadly, the studio seemed to bite off more than it can chew.

I'm always juggling 2-3 games of various time commitments for this reason. It's works well for me tbh. I just stopped caring about my "backlog" or finishing a game. Video games have been way more fun for me ever since.

Mereo, do gaming w I used to be concerned about a game being too short. Now I worry that it will be too long.

Welcome to the Patient Gamers world. Now that I’m in my late 30s with responsibilities, I’ll take a short linear game (e.g. Mafia Definitive Edition) with a compelling story over long, repetitive games (e.g. Assassin’s Creed). Quality over quantity for me. Since I don’t have a lot of time, I want to spend some quality time with the game.

forgotaboutlaye,

I don’t really see how what you’re describing relates to patient gaming – isn’t patient gaming moreso to do with waiting until games drop in price, then getting them patched up with all their DLC?

Mereo,

I have to say, it’s also a subculture of it. When I used to participate in r/patientgamers, a lot of people (myself included) realised that we didn’t care about the latest releases because of our responsibilities (and maturity), and many of us preferred short to long.

But it’s not homogeneous.

I’d say it’s parallel to or supportive of patient gaming.

Like, that commentor has less time to dedicate, so they’ll go for games with plots they may have heard were good/engaging which may not always be the latest, pricey, AAA content. They may also return to a game they’ve already bought because they enjoyed it so much.

In researching games that they’re interested in, they’re already making value decisions based on content, so it makes sense that they may add in value considerations based on pricing as well.

ScrivenerX, do gaming w I used to be concerned about a game being too short. Now I worry that it will be too long.

I stopped playing AAA games because there is so much filler. I would prefer if games went for 3-6 hours for playtime with a clean and tight plot.

I don’t read books that have a cool intro, 300 pages explaining how everything works, 1000 pages of characters just doing random stuff for random people, and then a return to actual plot in the last 100 pages.

Dankenstein, do gaming w Any Analogue Pocket Enjoyers Out There?

I was thinking about getting one but then I saw Retroid’s line of products. They run Android instead of using FPGAs so you can play regular Android games (including modern re-releases as well as Steam’s Remote Play) but they dual-boot a stripped-down version of Android for running emulators with better performance.

Was hella fun playing MediEvil on the flight from the US to India and that was with the Retroid Pocket 2, they have a much larger model out now.

The gaming space may have changed but I’d say it’s because you changed.

You brought in your decision the “worth playing”. Is this game worth to buy or is this game worth my time. When you can give your time a value, you can also compare it to what you are doing and if it’s worth to do that.

I tend to not really do that too much, because gaming is a hobby. If I start to compare it to what I could earn, well it doesn’t give the most “value” in monetary gain or maybe knowledge gain. But that is why it is a hobby for me, not work.

On the other side, is it worth playing? What is the comparison? The price? If you like the game? For me, if I can enjoy it, and come back to it, even if it’s very long (Warframe for example is the one where I have the most hours played), well it’s worth playing to me.

Tho some games are very expensive for the experience they give and some are really s* recently (gollum *cough) and those are not worth playing.

And is it worth playing compared to your other games? Maybe, maybe not? If you wait you can get discounts (at least on pc), and increase the value. And play your backlog in the meantime.

I think that playing the most recent games can be enjoyable but not always the best “value”. Tho I still play “newer” even if I have the backlog, which I use as a filler between releases and “patient gamers” style.

GolGolarion, do gaming w I used to be concerned about a game being too short. Now I worry that it will be too long.

I think you’ve nailed it by outlining the worry of kids without an income of their own - if you can’t buy what you want whenever, game length is a plus, but when you’ve got disposable income, summer sales, the odd free game, and new good titles coming out all the time, brevity’s more valuable than each game being a forever-game.

What are your favorite games to play on it? :)

I still have and play games regularly on my original Game Boy but I got to try the Analogue Pocket at a friend’s house, it was really nice!

msprout,

Right now, I am really enjoying Mario & Luigi on GBA. This one somehow missed me, perhaps because I was expecting something closer to Paper Mario at the time.

gromnar, do gaming w Any Analogue Pocket Enjoyers Out There?

What is an “Analogue pocket” for those of us … Out of the loop?

Raincloud,

A Game Boy clone console that can play original Game Boy (Color/Advance) cartridges with a terrific screen and support for many more systems’ ROMs via OpenFPGA.

tombuben,

It’s an expensive high end GameBoy clone, basically. It uses some specialized hardware (FPGA) to run original GB cartridges and can also run other retro consoles pretty well. It’s a bit nicer than most other handheld emulator devices that are on the market right now, although it’s limited in some other ways.

I profoundly enjoyed UberDanger’s “Journey from 1-60” . An adventure though WoW Classic full of insanity, grinding and virtual gambling. Nothing like it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dXLG-Wf93s

I did this for the Witness - it really helped to think out some of the puzzles if scribbled possible solutions down. Oh and Obra Dinn to an extent - mostly things like ‘I saw this guy hanging around in this memory - could he be X’?

chiz,

Yeah, I did this for the witness sort of. If I got stuck on a puzzle and was finishing up a session, I’d take a photo and then draw over the top of it as I went about my day, so I’d come back to the game with a solution.

Hellebert, do gaming w What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?

A zombie building game like 7 Days to Die, but with the emphasis on building and not pogs per second on Twitch to drive sales.

Also No Man’s Sky but built from the ground up for PC with HOTAS support and far more varied and better procedural generation.

  • Gekkonen,

Been a while since I watched SGF. I really like the obscure games he brings to publicity, like MODE and the Philips CD-i interactive medias.

    wieders,

I loved his dearly premonition lp, will have to check out illbleed :) Thanks for the tip.

thepiggz, do gaming w FFXVI - Am I crazy?

This. The reviews never seem to add up for the FF series. I thought the same thing about 15. Not sure who all these mega fans are nowadays, but it’s not those of us were playing FF2 on snes back in the day and whatnot. I’ve wondered about review manipulation on Square Enix’s part though I could just be majorly out of touch. It is possible that people genuinely are seeing something there that I’m not.

    catfishman,

I don’t know if I count as a mega fan, but I’ve been playing the FF series since FF1 on the NES. I loved FF1-FF9, but then I sort of lost interest in the series. I kept trying each new game, but they never really clicked for me.

Then I tried FFXV when it came out, and while it was a big departure from what the series was before, I loved it. It wasn’t perfect, but it finally clicked again for me. Same with FF7 Remake. I haven’t played FF16 yet, and I won’t until it comes out on PC, but I have a feeling I’ll like it.

I guess my point is, there are plenty of long time fans that are into the new games. And plenty that aren’t! I think the new direction is pretty polarizing.

    @thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@catfishman I'm a long time fan (6 & 7 my favorites, I know not very unique opinion) and have no interested into the newer games. From the reviews, looks like 16 is not for me (as 15 wasn't). Did you play 12? That is a very traditional Final Fantasy.

    catfishman,

I played it a little bit of FF12, but I may not have given it enough of a chance. I remember losing interest when I had to set up all of the gambits for my party.

    thepiggz,

I wrote a longer reply on someone else’s comment. Mostly, I’ve been a fan since I was a kid and I’m less thrilled with the creativity, heart, innovation and originality in the series as of late. Tho, as you get older I suppose lots of things start seeming less exciting haha

    Addfwyn,

It’s kind of a long standing quality of the series, since they are always trying new stuff that will resonate with different people. Outside of like actual FF2 (I assume you are talking about IV since you mention the SNES) I think I have heard people make a case for every FF being their favourite. Which is great, I am glad they try to shake it up every time.

Both of the projects Yoshida has been involved with I have been pretty lukewarm on though, so I am just a bit concerned if he is going to be the proverbial face of the series moving forward.

    thepiggz,

Yes, that was a ref to the weird choice to brand 4 as two in the US. Which I as a kid only later learned was what has happened

I can believe it. I’ve kinda figured I might just be settling into old person syndrome and thinking everything from my younger days was somehow better. I loved the series changing styles, vibes, characters, stories, worlds, etc., while some themes and elements remained the same. Nowadays tho, little changes and the stories and characters seems less and less compelling.

    Coelacanth,
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

The thing with Yoshida is interesting because I feel exactly the same way, but I also changed opinion on his works over time.

I don’t know what changed, but Heavensward era FFXIV was pretty cool in both gameplay and story, and Stormblood too has some great moments (primarily in the 4.X patch quests) while being even better, gameplay wise.

Since then the gameplay has been going in a direction I really don’t care for, and the same goes for story (though Shadowbringers had some great moments). I couldn’t make myself finish Endwalker.

I’m curious if you experienced this shift as well or you just didn’t care for FFXIV from the outset.

    Addfwyn,

I wasn’t a massive XIV fan at the outset, but there has definitely been a trend in the game design I didn’t like as it moved towards later expansions. They continually moved away from any kind of player agency/customization, so everything is super homogenized now (or at least when I last played). I stopped around the end of Shadowbringers, never actually got into Endwalker content.

They used to have cross-class skills and things like that, so it really felt like a FF job system where you would play different classes to unlock skills for your main. I think any FF player should be pretty comfortable with that. They have since simplified that, which I am sure is great for newer players but I don’t really like it. Now, if I am a level 80 warrior I am exactly the same as every other level 80 warrior, except for the number next to my item level. That kind of customization is a big part of both MMOs and FFs for me, usually.

Killer soundtrack though, Soken does good work.

    Coelacanth,
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

They have definitely gone further down the path of homogenisation and simplification. I don’t actually mind customisation being sacrificed for better encounter balance, but many classes started to lose their identities as features and mechanics got scaled back, Dark Knight and Astrologian being two examples. And of course what they did to healers in general. Personally the removal of Hissatsu: Kaiten from Samurai was the last straw.

Killer soundtrack though, Soken does good work.

He does produce some bangers, but I’m such an unabashed Uematsu fanboy. I actually felt Soken did some of his best work remixing, building on and riffing off of Uematu’s themes and melodies, which is another reason I enjoyed the earlier expansions.
