  • Freshly Frosted - Puzzle game. Seriously, I don’t remember the last time I felt so encouraged by the narrator. If you’re in a bad mental state, I do recommend this one.
  • Lost in Play - Two siblings go on an adventure through a fanciful wonderland of their imagination…or is it?
  • Spiritfarer - A chill management game where you’re Charon ferrying souls to the Everdoor. This one deals with death and saying goodbye to loved ones, but it does so in a very thoughtful and sensitive way. It definitely changed my paradigm.
  • A Hat in Time - Cute 3D action platformer. Silly fun.
  • Little Inferno - Despite its simplicity and obvious satire of consumerism/Capitalism, this has a very cozy feel and fun characters.
  • Tinykin - Adorable collect-a-thon platform puzzler with no enemies, only obstacles.
  • Gorogoa - Puzzle game with an interesting story that unfolds with each puzzle.
  • Doronko Wanko - You’re a cute doggo making a house as messy as possible.
  • Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People - Fun, silly point and click. I also recommend the show.
GammaGames, (edited )

Little Inferno can be beaten in ~3 hours and… let me check… yes, it’s on mobile! It’s by the people that made World of Goo, don’t sleep on it

Hat in Time is a great modern 3D platformer, movement was fun and I liked the variety of characters across the levels. The Murder on the Owl Express quest was my favorite!

Well, I personally have several “types” of game that help me feel comfortable when things are tough:

  • Puzzle Games: in relatively small doses, a good and somewhat challenging puzzle game can help by requiring focus, while not being stressful.
  • Deckbuilders: Slay the Spire and Monster Train are similar games that require mental engagement, without being to stressful.
  • Immersive Games: Games with an interesting mystery or otherwise immersive experiences. I am currently playing Killer Frequency and Hacknet, both for that reason.
Haraknos,

I think you should try “outer wilds” as it is a puzzle game and also quite immersive. I am not done yet with this game (only 15h or so) but it is a master piece. If you never heard of it, do not look any video or guide on the internet !

knokelmaat,

It is literally my favorite game of all time ;) great suggestion though!

wizardbeard,

If you like hacknet, you should give Uplink a try sometime. It’s the inspiration for the series, and a wonderfully immersive hacking game.

There’s also a modern UI mod for it.

Might I recommend Journey and Abzu? They’re both wonderful experiences with a healthy dose of zen if you decide you want to just pause and appreciate the environments.

moonlight,

I'm not sure if I would really say it's that uplifting, but if you like puzzle and card games, you'll love Inscryption

The warriors of the resistance to the AI-pocalypse will wear red sneakers and wisecrack like it’s 1994.

ICastFist, do gaming w Let's discuss: Final Fantasy
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Tactics is my favorite by far, possibly because of how grounded its story feels compared to most other Final Fantasy. The tactical combat is also amazing, unlocking the jobs from playing and leveling up different combos instead of at set points of the story (FF3, FF5) was very engaging. There was a lot to discover and teen me didn’t access GameFaqs often back then.

Anyday now I’m going to spend “decades” playing just to get the child prince into his teen years. I’m 99% sure the texts of the game won’t change, but it’ll be funny nonetheless.

Eggyhead,

Tactics was actually my first introduction to FF as a whole. I was intimidated by the numbers attached to the titles of all the other ones, so tactics seemed like a good place to start. I still love the music and the atmosphere of Ivalice, and I feel like so much is left unsaid about that realm.

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I love how the 3 first music you hear are one of inner calm, with Ovelia praying, suddenly changing to tension with the arrival of enemy soldiers and finally one of the best combat music of the game

whelk,
@whelk@lemm.ee avatar

Vagrant Story takes place in Ivalice as well and is the only game I’d say I love as much as Tactics when it comes to sheer vibe/atmosphere. The opening gameplay sequence is amazing.

fx3,

Thanks to Tactics I hugely got into XCOM later, and I still hope for some kind of proper remake or sequel.

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Hopefully one where they don’t fuck up magic effects and summons dropping FPS because of shitty code that the community figured a 4kb fix on the PSP

aStonedSanta,

We have been spoiled a bit with games recently yet I still crave a FFT full remake.

whelk,
@whelk@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah dude, Tactics was incredible. Art style, music, gameplay, story, just the vibe, man. My only beef is that it had the typical FF ending feeling of getting too sort of “out there”. Went from a very human story to the typical third act of oh now there’s some big weird big bad I have no emotional investment in to pose a more serious threat I guess.

Agrias remains one of my all time favorite characters.

Screw Algus.

@luciole@beehaw.org avatar

I hope you feel better soon knokelmaat!

I only played Animal Crossing on the switch right into the pandemic. I was sick in the first wave and that strain was wild. The whole world was in a state of panic and AC was a cute little haven while we bunkered down. I played every single day until two llamas got married and I was hunting for little hearts… then I had a moment and I never touched it again.

It’s funny that that franchise shares the same acronym as Assassin’s Creed.

Did you write the alt text or is it from an AI? No offense, just curious, because Firefox added alt text analyzed by (local) AI.

theangriestbird,

I’m writing them myself. Been trying to make a habit of it, at least over here on Beehaw.

thingsiplay,

Very nice and descriptive! I wish more people (me included) would write (meaningful) alt text.

theangriestbird,

thank you, i appreciate the acknowledgment! I think it’s also good for me to have this very minor barrier to posting, so i don’t just mindlessly flood beehaw with every meme i see elsewhere on the internet. lol

Human beings may not be perfect but a computer program with language synthesis is hardly the answer to the world’s problems

I find myself appreciating Deus Ex more and more with the years…

… But also utterly unable to replay it because it’s too close to home now.
