Xirup, w How to install Starfield
@Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

In the case of Linux I strongly recommend that you never use installers or repacks, which usually have a high probability of failure with Wine in my experience.

I can’t confirm right now because I haven’t downloaded Starfield yet, but try to only use portable versions of games, like the ones Steamrip offers, where you just download a .zip and you’re all set, just run the .exe in Wine and play as if it were Windows.

Although Starfield is currently not available on Steamrip, you can find a portable version of Starfield on Rutracker.

svamp,

The only problem I have encountered using installers/repacks with Lutris is that they sometimes can’t create the installation folder. Creating it manually in the .wine folder is the only workaround I have found.

Duck_Potaaato, w Where are the downloaded songs in your Spotify program files?

Spotify songs stored on your computer are encrypted/unreadable without the Spotify software.

There are tools that you can use to grab mp3’s by feeding it a Spotify playlist though.

retrieval4558, w What are good mullvadvpn alternatives with port forwarding

I use proton with a decent amount of success, although I have had trouble with connectibility.

meiko60,
@meiko60@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

do you find the protonvpn server is quite unstable?

pbjamm,

The speed can fluctuate as users pop on and off a server, but in general I have gotten excellent speeds (100mbps+). If ever I am getting poor throughput I swap to a different random server until I get what I need. I do not torrent with it though so I am not sure how it fares with that use.

retrieval4558,

I have not. Especially with the desktop client, which automatically will switch to another server if you get dropped. As far as speeds, I’ve also never noticed a problem but my bottleneck is my ISP so it’s hard to know.

DetachablePianist, w Sanity Check Setup

I can’t speak to the paid ProtonVPN service, but their free tier doesn’t allow torrenting. They’ll disconnect you with a slap on the wrist error about it.

DreadPotato,

Seems fair TBH, you’re easily sending TBs of data through it, that’s not the intention of the free tier.

Lettuceeatlettuce, (edited )
@Lettuceeatlettuce@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I found that out the hard way lol. Was just a soft warning. Premium tier allows P2P traffic and actually provides torrent-optimized servers too.

JasonHears, w Starfield has been cracked

I love that pirate groups still use ascii text art in their release notes. It’s like a little piece of the world that hasn’t changed in 30 years.

TheCaconym, (edited )

And still include cheesy mp3s playing too loud in retro-futuristic-looking installers

CosmicApe,
@CosmicApe@kbin.social avatar

The music in the installers is the best part about installing cracks

SaltySalamander,
@SaltySalamander@kbin.social avatar

The track included in the Rune installer for Starfield was actually a banger

EuroNutellaMan,

I need to find out how to make these. Mostly just cause I like it.

TheCaconym,

On Linux, you’ll want to install figlet and toilet (both available in the debian repos)

Alternatively you’ve got this online frontend

If you really want to get weird with it you can also play any video in ascii art through libcaca and mplayer. Looks like this

EuroNutellaMan,

I use Arch btw Endeavour OS so don’t have Debian repos but I will definitely check them out. I especially like the fancy dark mode.

TheCaconym,

I just checked and figlet at least appears to be in the arch repositories as well

EuroNutellaMan,

Thanks, I will check it out tomorrow. I uave used pyfiglet in the past tbf so I figured it woukd be available either via the official repos or the AUR.

Catasaur,

On Linux, you’ll want to install figlet and toilet

I know you’re 100% serious, but this sentence sounds so made up and hilarious

Wilker,
@Wilker@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

it’s typically just a kind of pixel art with monospaced fonts¹. any characters you see that’s not typically shown on your keyboard (e.g a filled square) can be found in a character selection program in your OS. anything else related to texts, templating and line breaks you can probably find a program somewhere on places like crates.io or gitlab or write something of your own without much trouble.

¹ a monospaced font is a font where every letter and character has the same spacing from each other, and are the easiest to do ascii art. (ascii is just one character table, but you can also gather unicode chars all you want)

Somehow I expect hackers to do cooler stuff these days. I want hackers to release a Switch version of the game.

adriaan,

mara,

I love that the installer has a cracktro, that’s the real good stuff.

lustrum,

I bopped to that shit for ages.

nova_ad_vitum,

I pirated a cracked version of Adobe Acrobat Pro recently. First thing I had to crack in years. It had a sketchy crack installer , with music and everything. Like it was back in the 90s. Of course it worked perfectly lol.

VonReposti, w Pirating Microsoft Office 2019 on Linux?

This might be a stupid question but now that you’re on Linux, why not use something like LibreOffice or Collabora?

_comfortablyAverage_,
@_comfortablyAverage_@lemmy.ml avatar

Libreoffice is the most atrociously structured piece of software I ever encountered. not only is the UI absolutely dated and god awful trash, it can fuck up microsoft office formatted documents. i possess a special hate for it since it decided to crap out on me when I REALLY positively needed it.

don’t know about collabora, will look into it

luna,

If you dislike the UI, you can turn on an MS Office-like ribbon design in the settings

Catradora_Stalinism, w Starfield has been cracked

Imma wait for the fitgirl repack

Schadrach,

fitgirl repack

Looks like it’s already out.

Catradora_Stalinism,

yass already have it seeded

cows_are_underrated, w Starfield has been cracked

Can anyone give me a full guide on how to get this to work on Linux(Arch btw), since I have absolutely no clue on how to do this stuff.

Contend6248,

There are endless guides already written out there, just search for “Lutris” or “Bottles”.

devious,

It’s super easy. I just added it as a non steam game in my library and it worked. It also works on Lutris using a default wine context. I’ve been playing it and I’m on EndeavourOS (Arch)

mara,
@mara@pawb.social avatar

Did you run into a case where a RX5700 was detected as unsupported?

devious,

No I didn’t face that. And I’m running an AMD 5700 XT

athos77, w 2023 Paid VPN Relationship and Corporate VPN Ownership Map

So what's a good VPN these days? Torrent support not needed, just want a little privacy.

danielquinn,
@danielquinn@lemmy.ca avatar

Mullvad is looking pretty good. You can even sign up for them through FirefoxVPN and then you’re also supporting Mozilla.

JoyfulCodingGuy,
@JoyfulCodingGuy@lemmy.ml avatar

I personally use Mullvad and love it but it is not conducive to helping seed due to port forwarding being blocked.

LazyKoala,

Surfshark worked well for me for a long time. Lots of servers, works well for unlocking region blocked content and it’s pretty cheap. If you’re into full privacy, I recently moved to AirVPN who accept payment through crypto, so you don’t have to hand over user data except for an email (which doesn’t have to be a real one, you can delete it later).

DemBoSain,
@DemBoSain@midwest.social avatar

I use Mullvad. The map says its only relationship is a sisterhood with Firefox VPN (they use the same servers, but different software).

Sharp312, w How to install Starfield

I tried running it with lutris but that didn’t work, I got an error saying I had a non compatible GPU (getting nms release day vibes lol)

In the end I added starfield.exe as a non steam game in steam, and forced proton under compatibility properties and it worked
