borth, w PS Plus price hike: We'll all pay for a subscription-based future | Opinion

This article is talking about how Sony’s service is “only a year old”?? What are they talking about? I thought this was about PS plus, which I’m pretty sure I had bought many years ago, not 1 year ago.

capt_wolf, w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games
@capt_wolf@lemmy.world avatar

I fell for his Populous reboot flop, Godus. Haven’t trusted a word from him since.

drspod,

Same. What a disappointment that was. Mobile-style time-gating and microtransactions in a PC game.

cooljacob204,

Honestly I don't trust any game info that comes from creators anymore since cyberpunk. Until I see a review video I take everything with a massive grain of salt.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

since developers have stopped making demos i simply take matters into my own hands to try games before paying for them…

all-knight-party, w Rockstar is selling Cracked Game Copies on Steam
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

I don't quite understand, provided that's true... Why would they do that?

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Low effort so they don’t need to bypass the ancient DRM and still sell it

Nighed,
@Nighed@sffa.community avatar

Either lost the source code, or didn’t have the expertise/time to fix it properly.

sugar_in_your_tea, (edited )

I’m pretty sure they just don’t care. This was easy and made money.

vlad76,
@vlad76@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Nintendo did the same thing. I don’t remember the exact details, but they took a pirated copy of NES Super Mario Bros and were reselling it on another platform. As much as a dislike Nintendo and Take-Two/Rockstar for their business practices I can understand that it’s probably easier to just take back “stolen” and modified code and use it for themselves instead of repeating the process of getting around old copyright BS in order to resell the game.

It’s scummy, but I get it.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

No, Nintendo didn’t.

Tldr: Nintendo outsourced the work for dumping NES ROMs and developing a NES emulator for GameCube and that contractor added the standard headers to dumps they made from original cartridges provided by Nintendo. Someone saw the headers and drew conclusions.

Long read: resetera.com/…/tomohiro-kawase-mightve-been-hired…

RS888,

The video linked in the Twitter thread explains it near the end but I'll summarize.

Rockstar used securom for the original disc release
Razor (an infamous piracy group) cracked the game shortly after release but only for Windows XP (Vista didn't exist yet)
Rockstar released the game on Steam "without securom" but in reality is just using Razor's crack
Fans eventually (like a decade later) realize there's Razor signatures in the executable on Steam
Rockstar pushes an update with a new executable, however this wasn't properly tested and is broken due to how the anti-piracy acts.

The game launches but similar to Arkham Asylum's "broken" grappling hook or Serious Sam's invincible scorpion enemies it messes with the player and doesn't function correctly on purpose.

Really interesting video and once again brings up the ethics of stealing from pirates' works as other comments have mentioned.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

The ethics are about releasing broken games and then not fixing them while still taking money.

OptimusPrimeRib, w DF Weekly: Is FSR 3 frame generation viable for console games?
@OptimusPrimeRib@sh.itjust.works avatar

If the fsr3 upscaler us remotely as good as dlss 2 I’m happy. Dlss is just good enough to use while I really don’t want to use FSR because of the shimmering.

ABCDE, w Stray is being turned into a movie

With a lot of fleshing out it could be good, with no need to follow the loose story the game has.

ricecooker, w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games

Being able to say this out loud is a big step. +1 emotional maturity. +1 admitting he’s got a problem.

I’ll not deny that he has passion, but someone really should have reigned him in. It only hurt the game when it inevitably never delivered. Who comes up with game features on the spot to the media? No respect for the people who actually have to make the game, sheesh.

eltimablo,

The last time someone reigned him in, we got Spore.

tonamel,

Peter Molyneux didn't work on Spore, that was Will Wright.

donuts,
@donuts@kbin.social avatar

Frankly, I'm offended by the comparison on Will Wright's behalf.

eltimablo,

Wait seriously?

GreenMario,

Maxis, not Lionhead.

Molyneux released Black and White at around that time.

Here’s a link to the thread on nitter in case anyone can’t view Twitter.

But holy cow, that’s uh… I’m not even sure what to say about that.

Edit: Apparently the link breaks for some mobile users and Kbin users due to the underscores, [nitter.net/__silent_/…/1698345924840296801](I believe this one should do the trick).

DarkWasp, w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games

Seems too little, too late. I’ll never forget the showcasing of “Milo” for Kinect which seems almost undoable even today.

simple, (edited ) w Coming to Xbox Game Pass: Starfield, Solar Ash, and Lies of P

Despite the fact that I complained on release that Solar Ash isn’t nearly as good as Hyper Light Drifter, I think it’s a really underrated game. The atmosphere and visuals are incredible, and the platforming is really fun. Hopefully now it’ll get some recognition.

Excited to play Lies of P when it comes out. I’ve been wanting an actually good soulslike for a while.

fraydabson, w Game Pass subscribers are snapping up Starfield’s $35 early access offer (extra on top of game pass)

This paired with the Xbox play anywhere system is nice. 2 years of game pass.

CADmonkey, w Baldur's Gate 3's companions were overly horny due to a bug

My first character I tried to make, I was wandering around poking everything and getting into fights (and losing) while Shadowheart and the green woman who’s name I can’t remember how to spell follow me around being catty or outright hostile to each other.

The second character I started after I basically got stuck in a position where I couldn’t advance, and every door our of the area I’m in was met with a “This is going to be bitterly hard for your sad weak little party” message on my first character. I spent some more time wandering around the crash site, which made me realize I needed to spend more time wandering around the crash site looking for people.

Monomate, w Tim Sweeney says Epic Games Store is open to devs using generative AI

Allowing games that use AI is one thing. But in case of lawsuits, will they defend those devs’ right to keep their games published?

Etterra, w Baldur's Gate 3's companions were overly horny due to a bug

I thought it was a feature.

SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE,

How do I keep the bug? I like the horniness! There should be a switch in the options to enable extra horny.

cdipierr, w Witcher TTRPG Going on 'Disappointing' Hiatus During The Witcher 4 Development - IGN

There are lots of options for roleplayers who want to bring the Witcher to the table in the meantime, of various levels of complexity. There’s On the Path for something fun and streamlined, or Vaesen and Ironsworn for a bit more meat. You could use Monster of the Week or Bump in the Dark if you’re willing to move the setting into a more Witchery direction.

And if you’d rather stick with a system you’re more familiar with, there are supplements like Into the Wyrd and Wild or The Perilous Wilds that allow you to put your players through dangerous evirons on the trail of unique monsters.
