MomoTimeToDie, w Xbox introduces new strike system to curtail bad behavior

  • cire,

    That’s strike one!

    conciselyverbose,

I don't see what's objectionable here. This isn't them saying they're going to start scanning every private chat you have to look for anything mildly controversial to take action against. This is saying that when you use their public-facing service and get reported for being an obnoxious douche to other users who are matched with you when trying to play their games, they have a standardized process so you know where you stand.

    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

Because you argue with someone on xbox live and they report you and you now have a strike, it’s been proven they will strike you over the smallest shit imaginable. Not having social features in X games is shit but okay but no multiplayer?

    conciselyverbose,

They have it recorded. If they're repeatedly upholding reports through appeals, you probably deserve to be reported.

And yes, you absolutely should lose access to multiplayer period if they're forced to ban you. The idea that just losing chat access is a suitable punishment for repeatedly being a shitbag is fucking absurd.

    nanoUFO,
    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don’t play on xbox because I don’t support trillion dollar companies who’s founders were friendly with epstein. But I have friends who do and I’ve seen threads on reddit about the subject. I doubt they are trying very hard with the appeal system. Imagine a game banning you for being toxic and then steam banning you from all multiplayer games. Boggles the mind.

    conciselyverbose,

Imagine a game banning you for being toxic and then steam banning you from all multiplayer games. Boggles the mind.

If Valve had the staff and Valve was the one handling bans from games, that's exactly how it should work.

People who aren't consistently making the experience of everyone around them worse don't routinely get banned, and a proper appeals system is more than enough. Being online doesn't mean that there aren't real people on the other end that you're harassing and treating like shit and ruining their gaming experience. "If you make an alt and go online, you lose offline access too" wouldn't be an overreach. It would just be good policy. You don't have a right to harass people with impunity.

    nanoUFO,
    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

You can get banned from forums or the game itself by the gamedevs and you can get banned for breaking no rules I don’t see any advantage to such a system. People would literally get baited into arguments in games and end up getting banned because they argued with someones throwaway account or banned by a non involved third party just because they through the argument was toxic even if it wasn’t and wasn’t even directed at them. This is infinitely worse than community servers now you have another layer of useless abstraction with dubious quality removing access to all your games. If only people who harass people with impunity didn’t already get banned in games and were the only people banned in games.

    conciselyverbose, (edited )

You're conflating two things. This isn't developers. It's Microsoft.

If Valve was in charge of bans, a literal lifetime ban for you as a human being would be entirely justifiable and fair as a punishment for inappropriate conduct in interactions with other players.

    NewNewAccount,

You get in a lot of arguments on XBL?

    GBU_28,

There is no reason to argue 1:1 about a video game. Simply don’t respond / start anything.

Deconceptualist, w where do yall go for your gaming coverage/pods?

It’s been many years and I’ve found very few outlets that consistently resonate with me.

In terms of review quality, I think the best one is Easy Allies (formed by folks who used to work at GameTrailers). They match video clips with a well-written script and professional narration so perfectly. You can tell they haven’t just thoroughly played the game under review, but they know its history among the genre. But IMO they focus too much on console, where I’m PC-only.

I’m also a Linux gamer now. Gaming On Linux and Boiling Steam are good for that, but I’m open to more.

Podcast wise: Rebel FM, though after all these years it’s more just to catch up with them than the actual talking points, but always enjoyable.

For deep dives into specific games Cane & Rinse (full disclosure I have met and consider friends some of the guys involved).

For Indie Games, The Sausage Factory by Chris O’Regan, which these days is hosted by Cane And Rinse is a great way to hear directly from the game devs themselves.

djsoren19, w where do yall go for your gaming coverage/pods?

I get all my news from Lyle Rath on Pregame Discharge. He’s told me it’s the only videogame show, so I’m surprised to hear about all these other shows.

I enjoy listening to these podcasts more for their entertainment value than just trying to get the best information.

Podquisition - The hosts are very entertaining as they go over the games they've played as well as news in the industry. Laura also does a great job at reporting news leaks.

What's Good Games - Industry veterans who run a little too high energy go over gaming news as well as games they've played and often get hands-on impressions for upcoming titles.

The Inverted Castle - Fun retrospectives on Metroidvania games of old.

Square Roots - A Let's Play on classic RPGs that goes into great detail on each game across multiple episodes featuring the hosts thoughts and opinions on the games as they play through each section together.

Yoooo this is an unexpected surprise. Base game was very fun, I’ll have to grab some friends and pick this one up again.

MashedPotato, w where do yall go for your gaming coverage/pods?

I listen to The Besties and Into the Aether, mostly because their tastes align with mine a lot of the time.

giant_smeeg, (edited ) w where do yall go for your gaming coverage/pods?

I’m in the UK, so some of this might be UK centric:

    Podcasts

    • Digital Foundry Weekly, Weekly podcast discussing gaming news/hardware etc (If you know DF you know what this is)
    • The Crate and Crowbar, PCGamerUK used to have a podcast and these guys move to this. Few friends talking about games and it’s decent (not overly technical or in depth, more just mates chatting).
    • IGN UK Podcast, absolutely love the personalities on this, it seems more like some mates chatting with a bit of structure (less like the IGN ethos of pushing as much out as possible).
    • VGC, Again a few mates chatting about games, good production values and I value their opinions.

    RSS feeds

    • Eurogamer.net features, similar to DF, but they cover decent articles about games.
    • Uppercut - Features, doesn’t post often but has well thought out articles about games and they’re a joy to read.
    • Polygon - Feature, interesting articles about films/games. I don’t read them all just ones interesting or relevant to me.
    • Rock Paper Shotgun features, PC Gaming articles that explores interesting questions about newer/popular games.
    • IGN Feed, All the feeds above are features where it’s not just regurgitated news that spams your feed, they’re well thought out. Well IGN isn’t features, it’s just gaming news. I hardly read the artcles, just scroll the titles.
    Conningemu,

A bit related but do you like using RSS? I've never used it before because it never seemed like it was worth setting up. Do you recommend it/ is it worth it?

    giant_smeeg,

    Yes I love it.

Pick all your favourite news/content/podcasts/youtube and set them up in an RSS app.

Then it’s all in one place, no visiting multiple apps/websites. It’s just there ready to go. You can then easily keep track of what you’ve read, haven’t read and saved.

    peasinspace,

first off, beautiful formatting! Jeff Grubb of current Giant Bomb has Andy Robinson from VGC on his morning show pretty frequently, I enjoy him. I do catch DF content and pods time to time as well.

I’ve never set up an RSS feed but might look into it, something to scroll on the can/ when i have a few mins of downtime would be nice. google’s served articles arent cutting it. Left the thing that previously filled this gap behind a few months ago.

    giant_smeeg,

Definitely setup RSS. Can just keep everything in one place. Lemmy, YouTube and Mastodon also support RSS feeds

If only it came to Xbox :(

I could play on my Deck, but I want to play this one co-op. We still have the Divinity games, which D:OS2 is apparently very similar, but I wanna try this!

If you can connect your Xbox controller to your Deck, you can still play it in Coop, just ignore the gaphics and you’re good to go

Still looking for good written coverage, though

Next time use the cross post feature please.

    soyagi,

I did use the cross-post feature. Many apps do not recognise or acknowledge cross-posting yet which might explain why this article may have appeared multiple times for you.

    wccrawford,

It does say it was cross-posted (to 3 places) at the top on the web.

thorbot, w where do yall go for your gaming coverage/pods?

I honestly don’t watch or listen to stuff about gaming. I just read my RSS feeds about upcoming games and pirate them and if I like them, I buy.
