TL:DR: She was kidnapped by a 29 year old guy. Kidnapper allowed her to bring her Switch. She connected it to the hotel wifi, and one of her friends saw she was online. That friend reported it to the investigators, who were able to get IP location info and track the console down. They surrounded the hotel room and captured the kidnapper on the scene. She was missing for 11 days.

Another reason why anything subscription based is bad

Well… Yeah. Wouldn’t you rather not pay for things? /s

    Dindonmasker,
    @Dindonmasker@sh.itjust.works avatar

I would say subscriptions are bad because they are proven to make people spend more money then they would have normally. That’s why most big companies do it now. Someone buying a game for 30$ and playing it for 1000 hours over a couple years isn’t very interesting for the big guys.

    Kolanaki,
    !deleted6508 avatar

But then how would you apply that logic to things like GamePass, where you will end up spending way less if you are a prolific gamer? I spent $120 for a year of PS+ Premium and it paid for itself in 2 weeks with the cost of buying the individual games vs just having access to the catalogue. And not just things I downloaded, played for 10 minutes and removed. There was plenty of things I would have out right paid $40-70 for and have put 40-100 hours in that I didn’t have to buy because they were on the subscription service. It would have cost almost a $1000 for the value of time spent playing games I got access to for only $120.

    crystal,

For something like a gamepass it’s debatable.

You probably pay more if using a gamepass, but you also try a lot more games.

If you played as many games without a gamepass as with one, you’d pay a lot more.

But without a gamepass, you usually restrict yourself to fewer games.

Whether removing such restriction is worth the (not as significant) additional cost is subjective.

So there’s an actual case for subscription in cases like this.

(The reason subscriptions make some sense here is because digital items are artificially limited. With physical items or services subscriptions are almost always a money grab. But with artificially limited things, such as digital items, subscriptions can definitely be reasonable.)

    halcyoncmdr,
    @halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world avatar

The subscription service is bad because a trial period that has no bearing on subscribers is changing? Okay.

    Fiivemacs,

Found another subscriber that shells out money monthly for items they will never own then complains they can’t afford housing/food.

Subscriptions help no one but companies profits.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

If you only ever play games or watch movies/shows once regardless, it’s just a cheaper way to get content. The only reason I don’t use Gamepass is because it doesn’t work on Linux. That’s it.

I have Netflix and Disney+ because it’s way cheaper than buying the movies and shows I watch on it, movies and shows that I’ll only ever watch once.

    big_slap,

who the fuck even wants cross play this badly? minecraft bedrock exists seemingly solely for cross play , and anytime i play minecraft with someone they specifically want to play java. i’m convinced the largest market share of cross play users is young folks with no real control over what play they play on.

    Lojcs,

What does cross play have to do with this?

    sugar_in_your_tea,

That’s the excuse those companies give for it. There’s nothing stopping someone like Microsoft from making “Bedrock” and “Java” Minecraft versions play together. Just establish an API and make separate clients if needed.

    Lojcs,

Bedrock and java have different behaviors in many things. Not to mention different mod scenes. Those two are very much different games imo.

But still I don’t see what that has to do with always online. Crossplay doesn’t need you to be always online

    sugar_in_your_tea,

And those separate behaviors would be minimized if they supported cross play between Java and Bedrock.

As for cross play and always online, you’re absolutely right that it doesn’t require it, but it makes things a little simpler. If a game requires you to login with the server on startup, that check only has to happen once, instead of happening when you engage with the multiplayer mode. It also makes it so the game can integrate social aspects pretty easily (friend X is online, do you want to play together?).

So if a game offers multiplayer as it’s intended main gameplay, then it can make sense to require always online.

That said, I still hate it. I would prefer companies be forced to support offline play if they offer a significant single player experience. I know it’s something I consider when buying a game (I play with my Steam Deck offline quite frequently), and ideally game stores would have similar requirements as well.

  • aSingularFemboyHooter,

What was promised where? Because yeah, get capable technical team together who are excited to share a project they’re working on, and they are bound to be optimistic about what could be realistically implemented over a long timeframe. Nothing but the official release product information should be considered a promise, and nothing but unsponsored, unaffiliated reviews should be taken as proof.

I highly doubt that any pre-launch ‘promises’ were made with an intention to decieve.

  • aSingularFemboyHooter,

But it’s pretty realistic and happens all the time. I don’t see what’s ‘bootlicky’ about not trusting ‘promises’ by corporations years before release that are not protected under laws like the Trades Description Act.

I don’t know what was supposedly promised, because I didn’t follow interviews and stuff leading up to it, I just bought the game based on what was actually delivered in the end, which is how all purchases should really be made.

Stuff mentioned during development should never be taken as a promise, no matter how trustworthy or honest the developer is. This is just the simple reality of long projects.

It’s also why we don’t hear from devs as much these days, instead it’s mostly PR people, as too much weight is put on off-hand quotes.

Studios like CDPR have nothing to gain, and lots to lose, by deliberately over-promising.

    Tencha,

I would guess of us already moved on. We bought the game on launch, got a shitty, barely working experience. Then after finishing it or not, we moved on. Now, every few months there’s always some posts about about the game finally being good, even years after its release. But I only remember my shitty experience because I moved on. I couldn’t care less about the game at this point.

    Oh well patientgamers always win.

While I loved the cyberpunk's premise, idea and atmosphere since the game's announcement, I sticked to the "no preorders ever" rule and because of reviews decided to just wait them to patch it.

    sciawp,

This is the way. Just picked it up on steam summer sale since I hear the new dlc is coming soon with a lot of changes to the base game.

I have critiques but overall it’s a really beautiful game with good characters and story. The gameplay is interesting and varied enough, too. I’ve still encountered a quite a few crazy bugs but nothing too frustrating.

I hope they do more with this franchise because I really like what they have set out to make and I’d love to see it even more fleshed out in the future

GTA Online could have been so great, but instead it feels like they put no effort into doing anything but selling new DLC. The missions are boring and unrewarding, the motivation to work with others is nil, there is no good teaming system, it’s incredibly complicated to start any business and the guide is lacking to the point where there might as well not have been a guide at all. Then if you say fuck it, I am going to attempt this all on my own someone comes up and frags you with a rocket launcher 3 seconds into attempting to pick a lock.
