sugar_in_your_tea, w Only Up, one of 2023's biggest Twitch games has been removed from Steam, due to developer's stress

I don’t really understand the decision here, wouldn’t it be better to just put out a notice saying that it won’t see any more updates, discount it, and then move on? A lot of people like it, so I doubt it would require any real work.

Then again, if the OP actually did steal assets, I can understand taking it down to limit liability.

Even if they didn’t steal assets, a copyright suit is a massive pita to defend against

sugar_in_your_tea,

Created by SCKR Games, Only Up was previously removed from Steam amid accusations of copyright violations connected to various in-game assets

It was already removed for that. I’m just wondering if the accusations weren’t satisfactorily resolved, or if this is something different entirely.

Either way, it’s up to them, but I just think it’s a little odd. It seems like a great game for getting some residual income from.

ech,

They’re the developer, or “dev” if you prefer. OP doesn’t make any sense here.

Abrslam, w What do you think is a good required completion time for video games? What examples come to mind of games that felt just right?

Number of hours doesn’t really come into it these days compared with how fun the game is for me. I’m nearly 40, and whether or not a game is engaging is most important. I’ve got about 50hrs into Avernum: Escape from the Pit (a retro style isometric RPG), but I’ve got nearly 80hrs into Teslapunk, my favourite Shmup(completing the game takes about an hour).I Iove Dark Souls 1 and 3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, but eventually got bored of Elden Ring and its open world.

Ultimately how fun a game is combined with how painless it is to get started is what I’m most interested in these days. I don’t have enough free time to be worrying if there are enough hours of gameplay.

@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Woah. I got Gary Oldman confused with Alan Rickman. Rickman died back in 2016… and the article STILL made sense.

That alone makes me think they’ve spent way too long on the goddam game.

    @rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

    TL;DR They included battle passes to a game you already have to pay for monthly. People didn’t like it. They went the classic corporate route of empty phrases while including a subtle poke at the people who now boycott it, which made them like it even less (seriously, did this ever de-escalate things?).

    zaph,

    How to ensure they don’t come back even if you manage to fix the original issue.

    The Deck’s AMD Van Gogh APU can’t be had in any other device and is substantially different to any other chip AMD produces.

    Is it really that different? I thought it was basically Zen 2 CPU cores and RDNA 2 GPU cores. It’s not an off-the-shelf SOC, but it’s also not that custom. So this seems a little hyperbolic to me. I’d say it’s pretty similar to the XBox Series S SOC (and Series X and PS5), which uses the same cores, just a different amount of each.

    I also think it’s kind of interesting that they’re jumping to a VR Headset. If it’s a standalone, it’s probably not “low power.” If it’s not standalone, I think they’ll have issues transferring data fast enough to be practical. So my money is on some kind of accessory, like maybe a Steam Link 2 or a controller. Those are low power, wireless, and seem to fit the bill a bit better.

    Then again, maybe it is a VR headset. But I really don’t see them competing at the low end on VR.

    holiday, w Baldur's Gate 3's success is not about setting a new "standard"

    I think I read another user said “they treated the time I have to spend on video games with respect.”

    And that line has stuck with me.

    So while I don’t expect anything close to BG3’s scale or polish but every few years, I do expect not to buy a game and have the game hold its hand out for cash.

    Aurenkin,

    Games respecting my time is something that I’ve definitely come to value a lot more. Quantity for quantities sake, inane things like overly restrictive save points or busywork for people who don’t pay to skip… I just can’t really be bothered with it.

    NuPNuA,

    Save points stopped being an issue when game suspension/quick resume became standard. I’ve left my Series X mid game before, powered it off at the wall and gone away for a week, the game loaded back exactly to the point I left it still.

    Aurenkin,

    Yeah I love suspend/resume on my steam deck. I definitely don’t think it’s stopped being an issue for me though, sometimes I want to turn the device off or if I’m playing on PC I want to quit the game and do something else or just turn it off.

    It’s just frustrating because saving the game is not a technical problem and hasn’t been for decades, it’s a design choice and I shouldn’t need to lean on a technical solution to get around it. Maybe I’m just stubborn though

    Swedneck,
    @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    saves are also important for archiving and sharing game states, maybe i want to preserve this specific game state so i can relive it for the rest of my life? or i want to download a save from someone else to experience something specific they found or made

    Aurenkin,

    Yeah and also, sometimes (very rarely of course) I actually die ingame and need to load. I don’t want to waste a bunch of time when that happens.

    Tar_alcaran,

    That is SUCH an amazing way to put it. No grinding, no waiting for timers to run out, no traveling back and forth to savepoint, no insanely hard challenges or unlocks. Just experiencing it, and (for the most part) even failing forward.

    orbitz,

    Just scores of empty containers to check. I know they can’t all have something but respecting my time would include minimizing having so many empty containers. That’s about my only complaint so far though in that regard so it’s not that bad or anything either.

    SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE,

    So many empty containers but yet I still have a compulsive need to check each and every one.

    I may be a loot goblin but my party has about 1300 spare camp supplies in Act 1 on tactician mode so I’ve got that going for me which is good.

    holiday,

    Hold left alt and the containers worth looting will be highlighted.

    SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE,

    Lol my pinky gets tired holding down the alt key all the time. I need a mod that permanently enables those highlights and I need it to highlight everything including plates, cups, bottles, etc. Because I’m gonna take it all!

    pory, (edited )
    @pory@lemmy.world avatar

    The standard argument here is that you’re not supposed to look in every container for loot. However yep everyone I’ve seen play this game including myself is an absolute loot goblin. What if this rotten fruit basket has a +2 greatsword or boots of elvenkind!

    I think there’s a mod that adds a button you can click to “loot the room” - characters make perception rolls and “find” anything of value and put the items into their inventories. Haven’t tried it but might be your jam.

    orbitz, (edited )

    I completely agree with your comment. It’s a bit of a slowdown from play when you search everything but at the same time if playing tabletop you’d have people trying random things that don’t light up for interaction of a video game. In the end it’s only a slight slowdown anyways and does add to immersion so it’s not terrible but more a time waster is all.

    I haven’t looked at mods yet, I like to do a first playthrough vanilla usually but I completely forgot they were a thing here, so thanks for the reminder.

    PithyPolynym, w Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 Revive Age-Old RPG Debate About Encumbrance - IGN

    Isn’t this just typical of pretty much every game of this type?

    It’s part of the game style, is it not? Any action/RPG-type game I can think of has encumbrance as a mechanic, so I don’t see how this is something to write about.

    Ookami38,

    My issue is, encumbrance is fine if it’s engaging. Limit me to a few weapons and pieces of armor. But if ALL of the junk is going to be lootable, then make it 1. Worthwhile and 2. Not a hassle. If you give me a shiny, so help me imma loot it, and if it’s actual trash, that’s just a big waste of time and disappointing

    PithyPolynym,

    I don’t disagree.

    Just saying I pretty much expect it from this type of game.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

    Not really. Some have space-based inventory instead of encumbrance, some have no limit, and some don’t have many items to pick up.

    Weight-based inventory is relatively rare in my experience, though it’s very common for Bethesda games.

    Just a wireless adapter for the index would be nice, though it would have been nicer 3 years ago. The cable makes the barrier of getting it out of the box pretty high for me personally. Still definitely don’t want the mobile level graphics of a fully standalone headset though.
