Hanabie, w Baldur's Gate 3's success is not about setting a new "standard"
@Hanabie@sh.itjust.works avatar

What devs see is “all those other devs are too lazy to make a good game”.

What players mean is “all those other games are full of micro transactions and sell missing content and features as dlc”, which is not the same thing.

What players want to be addressed is the bad influence investors have on the products. Publishers aren’t interested in publishing good games, they only care about money.

Devs don’t go about making a game only for the money. Most of them would rather do it the same way Larian does it, focus on quality and provide a good gaming experience, but their hands are tied.

So the message gamers try to get out goes to the wrong recipients, and it’s obviously being taken the wrong way.

Pretty obvious and epic communication fail.

sugar_in_your_tea,

And that’s why I generally prefer indie games. Many indie games are made with passion, with money being down the list of priorities. AAA games are made with money first, though there is certainly passion as well, it’s just not the top on the list. As studios and budgets get bigger, so will their expectation of profits.

So if you want better games, buy from smaller studios. Show them that you value passion over high budget.

pory, (edited )
@pory@lemmy.world avatar

But when a game like BG3 comes out, with all the stuff no indie studio can afford to do and it has this level of passion without sticking its hand in your pocket, it absolutely reminds us that AAA doesn’t have to be like it is.

As good as indie RPGs are, Disco Elysium was only able to afford voice acting after being a giant commercial success. No small budget team is going to be able to have mocap work on the level of BG3. These things cost a lot of money and involve paying a lot of workers. BG3’s Kickstarter got to be carried by the name recognition of Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons & Dragons in general, following a huge popularity surge for the latter thanks to the rise of real-play podcasts and such.

Do games need hundreds of voice actors and incredible mocap to be good? No. But it’s something that only AAA studios have the ability to add, and it’s a shame that it’s all going into the next fifa/COD/whatever other money pit GAAS the industry is shitting out.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Agreed. But I’d much rather sacrifice AAA features like mocap, voice acting, and RTX if it means a higher chance of playing a game with a lot of passion put in. Those are nice to have, but not the reason I pick a game.

pory,
@pory@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah. BG3’s exceptional because it doesn’t need to sacrifice that stuff.

sugar_in_your_tea,

Yup. And I wish more AAA titles took more risks in gameplay and storytelling, but those seem to be few and far between.

Starfield is a fantastic example. If you asked me to describe a Bethesda game set in space, it would look a lot like Starfield (but I probably would’ve missed the procedural generation). Usually AAA games are pretty much as expected, with one or two surprises on the side, and that’s it.

BG3 basically delivers on Cyberpunk’s promises (branching storylines, mocap, great visuals, etc), and it did so on launch, which is really rare.

russjr08, w Forza Horizon 5 - Introducing EventLab 2.0!
@russjr08@outpost.zeuslink.net avatar

I’m not currently in a great spot to watch a video, so I asked Bard to summarize the video. In case anyone else is curious / doesn’t want to watch:

AI Generated Video SummaryThe video you linked is a trailer for the EventLab 2.0 update for Forza Horizon 5. This update introduces a number of new features to the EventLab, including: The ability to create custom routes for races and challenges. The ability to add custom props and objects to events. The ability to create custom weather and time of day conditions for events. The ability to share events with other players. The EventLab 2.0 update is a major overhaul of the EventLab, and it gives players a lot more creative freedom to create their own custom events. The update is scheduled to be released on September 9, 2023. Here are some of the highlights of the EventLab 2.0 update: Custom routes: Players can now create custom routes for races and challenges. This is a major new feature that gives players a lot more control over the layout of their events. Custom props and objects: Players can now add custom props and objects to events. This includes things like traffic cones, barriers, and even animals. Custom weather and time of day: Players can now create custom weather and time of day conditions for events. This allows players to create events that take place in any environment, at any time of day. Shared events: Players can now share their events with other players. This means that other players can play the events that you create. The EventLab 2.0 update is a major new addition to Forza Horizon 5, and it gives players a lot more creative freedom to create their own custom events. The update is scheduled to be released on September 9, 2023.

Keep in mind, since I haven’t watched the video, I can’t confirm the accuracy. For example, the video description says the update releases September 12th, but Bard thinks its scheduled for today, September 9th - so take it with a grain of salt.

AdmiralShat, (edited ) w [Rumor] Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly uses Nvidia's DLSS to boost frame rates

While there’s a current DLSS thread, am I the only one who actually likes the aesthetics of DLSS, regardless of FPS? It adds a softness to the whole image that reduces eye strain for me and make the game more cinematic almost.

RonSwanson,

From what I understand, DLSS is also the best anti aliaser there is. No jaggies makes everything easier on the eyes

Send_me_nude_girls,
@Send_me_nude_girls@feddit.de avatar

The recent versions are much better. But it also depends on the engine. I haven’t played Cyberpunk2077 since release, but there the trailing shadows of moving people and cars were very visible. Hopefully these issues are a thing of the past.

AdmiralShat,

I remember the Witcher 3 had some pretty shitty interactions with DLSS, too

Amir,
@Amir@lemmy.ml avatar

There’s “DLAA” which has the DLSS softness without the upscaling part. Some games support it, would recommend checking it out.

AdmiralShat,

Noted, thank you

Is anyone else done with Nintendo? I bought the switch when it first came out after buying every other dang console for years and it just snapped in me finally that many of their flagship games are the same lifeless thing every time and not even as close to fun as their predecessors that I can still play today. Mario party was such a fucking let down for me. The only game I was able to get into so far was smash bros and it didn’t last too long. Tried that animal crossing game during pandemic but it was so bad you were just a manipulated slave to animals getting you to put chairs in your house…it was Soo boring. I tried Zelda too but man I didn’t enjoy weapons constantly breaking. I think the last straw for me was the new Pokemon games and how bad they ran. I came to the conclusion what’s the point of buying this thing when I just have way more fun on PC for way cheaper price for games overall? Can’t even play with anyone on Nintendo anyways without paying for access to their servers while also having to have Internet. Even if you get a ballin PC overtime the game library is way more extensive and less expensive for the most part with sales and steam key sites. Nintendo never budges on pricing for anything.

smeg,

Mario Odyssey was the best Mario game I’ve every played, so not all bad. I just borrowed a Switch to play it though. Nobody is forcing you to pay the Nintendo tax!

theragu40,

I’ve played the switch more hours than I think any previous console. For all its flaws the switch is home to so many quality Nintendo experiences at this point that if someone finds that this is the generation that they’ve tired of Nintendo then it’s possible they simply don’t like Nintendo style games anymore.

Mario Party indeed was a pile of shit. But there are so many incredible games.

And009,

I like it

I also think it will probably flop.

xcxcb, w Skillup: Guild Wars 2 in 2023 (inc. Secrets of the Obscure) - Review

Personally, as someone who returned recently after a long break, the new maps absolutely suck with the gimped ass mount they give you. Even after unlocking a bunch of masteries it’s still a massive chore to navigate around the map. You mostly go around doing limited time events and especially rifts (which could point you to a part of the map you can’t directly travel to) where if you don’t get enough “contribution” before the timer ends it doesn’t count.

Absolute garbage map and mount mechanics design for this expansion sadly and I’ve already put it down for something else.

Damn. That seems excessive. Then again, online cheaters are vermin.

otter,

Sounds like it was because of they were selling cheating software (and maybe versions of the game that allowed cheating?)

So the amount might be related to how much they made from doing that

xcxcb, (edited )

They way it reads is that they were actually playing and circumventing bans, possibly selling accounts too maybe. They were streaming their exploits on Twitch too.

Paper Mario. I actually have the original game and the N64 to play it, but play on the switch instead. I really enjoy it. I also tried Palia on PC, but it doesn’t feel right.

nek0d3r, w What do you think is a good required completion time for video games? What examples come to mind of games that felt just right?
@nek0d3r@lemmy.world avatar

I just want to have fun, no matter the length. I love Titanfall 2’s campaign and it only takes a couple hours to complete, even shorter than most shooters. People complain that it’s too short but I think that’s its strength. But a lot of AAA games I’ve played just feel stretched and bloated like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, where it’s just not fun at all between all the tedious things I have to do.
