DioramaOfShit, do games w Celebrating 25 Years of Diablo II with David Brevik

Best game of all time. Flawless

Laser,

Nah, the game has plenty of flaws and design issues.

Example: defense. It’s completely different from most games that came after it and unintuitive (it works like in Diablo I). It rather works like evasion in newer games and it’s basically the defensive version of attack rating. Either it negates all physical damage or nothing. Not to be confused with chance to block. Which does the same, but with blockstun. Oh, and while running, your defense is set to zero. Which again isn’t explained anywhere (but you can check it by keeping your stats open and running). Walking is fine.

Hidden stats: so more defense is better, right? Not necessarily. First, you have the strength requirements which are visible; second, there are hidden armor classes that impact your character’s movement speed, which is why stuff like Archon Plate is so good.

So there are four resistances (fire, lightning, ice and poison). Just kidding, it’s actually six because physical and magic damage can also be modified in the same way (though that attribute is rare for players, but it exists). But they’re not shown on the resistances page, but rather under all stats if modified. This is how monsters gain their “immune to physical / magic” property.

Then the game doesn’t really explain itself most of the time. Take “Amplify Damage”. The in-game description is “Increases the amount of damage received.”. So let’s guess what it does: probably amplify the damage regardless of type and then apply resistance? You couldn’t be more wrong, it lowers physical resistance.

Talking about skills, the skill trees could use some improvements I think. I’m not a big fan of synergies because it can force you into dumping points into practically unusable skills.

Items are also a bit of a pain point. A lot of uniques are straight up unneeded because they’re only relevant when itemization doesn’t matter yet and then just fall off. Their effects are often not as unique as one would like. But this is excusable because the game pioneered a lot of this stuff.

Where it gets ugly is when none of the items matter (be it rare, set or unique) because of runewords. The biggest offenders are Enigma, Infinity, Insight, Grief and Spirit. Infinity and Insight usually go onto your mercenary, so they’re not competing with personal equipment slots. But just double Spirit is really good. Paladins, the first or second best class, can use this even earlier because they don’t need to wait for Monarchs; their exceptional shields can have four sockets, in addition to very good resistances. They stand above other classes with the sorceress. Or did until Mosaic was introduced.

Oh, and did you know that “+X% enhanced damage” behaves differently depending on whether it’s on a weapon or on another piece of equipment?

Still love the game to death. But it’s not flawless

This looks completely unappealing, and I say that as someone who likes 3D platformers. There’s even no replay with all of the attempts at once, I’d argue that gimmick did a lot of heavy lifting.

There is, whoever's playing is skipping it. See 11:08 for one time he didn't.

I really like this game but nobody to play with :(

Not really a game you can play solo

philophilsaurus,

It’s the eternal problem of this game unfortunately…

Katana314,

Would be great if the matchmaking world could set some criteria restrictions.

PlayStation controllers have a mic built in; make an expectation people will use it, and speak English. If people matchmake games, and then leave those games 45 seconds in, penalize them and prevent them from joining new ones.

I know those things are idealistic, but I also think with a very dedicated effort an online network could create that space.

Zahille7,

I’ve had decent times soloing in the volcano area of the map in the past. Idk about recently though.

Blisterexe,

I have the same problem, a shame, because when i did play it with someone it was very fun.

The last Black Ops I cared about was 2. I could almost feel the developers of that one screaming that they wanted to break out of the COD mold. It actually had a lot of cool, if underbaked ideas. There were the sidemissions where you commanded an NPC squad ala Brothers In Arms, there were the pre-mission loadouts where after beating a mission set in the past you could go back and load up with future guns, there were multiple endings driven by choices in the missions.

There was a lot of stuff going on in that game which if it had been given a longer development cycle than the COD treadmill, and more freedom to stray from COD mainstays could have been something interesting. All of the above features could have really been pushed and refined beyond the small implimentation they ended up as. BO2 also tied the setting back to the cold war era roots, which makes it far more interesting that the cutout metal angular girder future design that is just the most generic looking thing ever. Call Of Duty Advanced Warfare was forgotten for a reason and it’s disappointing that Black Ops ended up eating all its aesthetics.

None of this matter of course, since no matter how many story trailers they release or how much people like me talk about what could make single player good, in the end the series is kept alive by tweaked out multiplayer addicts so I suppose it is all just a waste of time to think about.

VerilyFemme,

I’ve been playing through Black Ops II again recently, what with it taking place this year. The story is such a step up from 1. From playing as Menendez to interviewing Woods, it feels like the main actors on both sides are fleshed out. The story is insanely prophetic.

I mean, if you had asked me if BO2 or MW3 was more realistic back in the day, I would have said MW3 hands down. Yet Black Ops II’s plot centers around advancement in tech due to rare earth minerals mainly owned by China, mass scale drone warfare, and a cult of personality grown through YouTube.

Realizing there were multiple endings was major for me as a kid, and I honestly get chills with every time I play it.

This one is a lame attempt to recapture what people loved about the first two games. That’s what 5 and 6 were as well. Plus, the return of Menendez really dampens any excitement I would have had. If they can barely write Woods well, how are they going to write Menendez well?

pycorax,

I think Black Ops 6 did a lot of really cool things for the story with a few open ended levels and a really cool segment in the middle won’t spoil. Story wise I think it is actually one of their better ones, it had the potential to be almost as good as Blops 1 if the ending wasn’t so rushed and failed to tie up the plot lines properly. I have a feeling it’s so that they could reuse the characters in Warzone which is a huge shame.
