Disney speedstorm has solid gameplay…. At the expense of being pay to win in most modes. I played enough to “unlock” split screen and politely explained to my kiddo he can only be one of like 3 characters. Damn shame the game has a slot machine barrier. As soon as this sonic game drops though I’m grabbing it.
That Nickelodeon Kart series is not too bad too, maybe it doesn’t look or play as well as the Disney one, but at least you get the characters with the game
Thanks for the suggestion! I think I have one of those from a humble bundle, I’ll have to check it out again (it’s been a while). The main thing I’m looking for is a kid friendly “auto steer / auto accelerate” mode that still gives him some sense of control. I noticed a lot of Nickelodeon, licensed games don’t include any voice acting, which irritates me, but the kiddo probably won’t mind.
We’ve only seen 2 seconds of gameplay, how can you be sure it’s not a rogue like or something? Did I miss it being stated somewhere or you’re just guessing?
Also, this comment reminded me how ridiculous I find it that we have genres such as “metroidvania” and “souls like”, “auto shooter” , “survivors like” and etc. Yet we can’t come up with subgenre names other than arpg which can describe everything from Bastion, to Horizon Zero down, to path of exile. What’s up with that?
I’ve never seen Horizon Zero Dawn called an ARPG but that does seem to be the consensus. I’ve always considered games like that or new God of War to be “adventure games”.
We need more subgenres! What do you call breath of the wild or the spiderman games in that case?
Imo god of war/ horizon are aptly named because they’re action focused RPGs.
We need new, better name for the “diablo-like” games, however. I feel like those are different enough that there’s not enough “rpg” left in them beyond the character building elements. Survivorslike aren’t RPGs despite them having character leveling and stuff so why should diablo 4 /Poe be called rpgs?
Video game genres are one of the few fields in which I’m not a prescriptivist. But survivorlikes only aren’t called RPGs because Vampire Survivor is embossed on the whole subgenre. The suite of mechanics rose to high prominence on the back of one game (or franchise, in the case of Soulslikes) rather than refined through years of experimentation.
We aren’t going to get more, simple names unless they’re similarly derived from a single, famous ancestor like your “Soulslike”. But you can always just be descriptive. Diablo/PoE are “top-down gear-grind RPGs”; it’s jargony but all subgenres are.
Survivorslike is just one option, auto shooter is the same thing and doesn’t use vampire survivors’ name.
And well, in this case, I just saw op say that this game was gonna be an arpg and because I play a lot of PoE, last epoch, etc. I was expecting something in that vein. Then I open the link and I see 2 seconds of something that looks more like hades or god of war and I was disappointed. So if me wishing we had better terms for various genres makes me a prescriptivist, I guess I am one, in this case.
Also tdggrpg is too complicated of a subgenre name, I feel xD
Yeah, it’s not trendy but I don’t think we can do trendy unless we do like I said and derive from standout games with identifiable suites of mechanics. You just have to be descriptive or accept heavy overlap.
“Auto shooter” is not very descriptive. In 10 years, someone would be having this same conversation about that term. Asteroids is basically an auto shooter because there’s no reason to not always be shooting, it’s effectively a QOL change. Some bullet hells too.
There already is a Steam page and the description says co-op action RPG.
I mean, perspective matters, I suppose: you could use isometric/top down and 3rd person to make a distinction between PoE and HZD, but then again I don't play either, or ARPGs in general, so that's as nuanced of a take as I could have on this.
Nah, that wouldn’t be enough to differentiate PoE to hzd, imo. It’s like comparing Max Payne to CSGO. Or I dunno… rocket league to Football manager… or Mario party to street figther… trying to cover as many bases here to cover the games that you might be more familiar with. xD. Point is, in both games you get a character which you level up and customize by doing quests and killing mobs, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end, as far as the gameplay, mechanics and goals of fans go.
And for the record, despite this also being called an arpg, it’ll be very different from both PoE and hzd. ARPG seems to be as vague as “driving game” or “shooter”.
My experience with Code Vein was briefly playing it on game pass, but couldn’t get past the weeb bait waifu chick. Like seriously, first cutscene and her boobs are waving in the breeze while she’s standing still, like they’re fucking flags or something. It was downhill from there when the gameplay was mediocre and I was supposed to somehow connect with and protect said waifu as my motivation.
Uninstalled in under an hour. Wife and I jokingly refer to the game as “Code Titty-Flap.”
It looks interesting. The Summer Gameshow said it was inspired by Silent Hill and DDLC, so it’s an interesting concept. The character models are a little jarring with the game world, but it could be intentional for all i know, and I’m excited to give this a shot.
It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if it’s actually set in a more anime-style world, and that the “real” looking one in the trailer is imaginery or something.
That’s objectively incorrect though. It’s an entirely new chip based on a different architecture. Switch 1 games are actually run through a translation layer, which is why a small number of them still don’t work on Switch 2 currently.
On weekends it’s too much to ask, yes. Monday to Friday is perfectly ok. If we could reschedule this until Monday at the earliest, that would be greatly appreciated.
oh heck yeah! as a patapon fan i finished the demo and i absolutely adore it! it feels like the natural evolution of patapon, we skipped a few games that’d make the transition smoother but the soul is there
I didn’t expect it would enhance framerate at all without a game patch to be honest.
I was expecting something like new 3DS, where all games that were not specifically patched for it ran exactly the same. But I guess the difference is that new 3DS must have run in pure hardware old 3DS mode for those.
I felt DQB2 was already somewhat playable, but I probably never did very crazy builds. I remember people warning that destroying mountains on the main island for example was a very bad idea, because they were supposed to limit how much of the island the game had to render. Maybe I should check my old island on Switch 2.
It’s kind of the point I was trying to make though. They could have unlocked CPU speed for O3DS games by default, and they chose not to. I assume they didn’t because of all the games, there will always be the odd ones that behave unpredictably when they’re running on unintended specs. So they went for 100% compatibility unless the game was specifically patched for N3DS.
Even though this time it’s software emulation, they could have played a bit safer by emulating exactly a Switch 1, including clock speed. Turns out Switch 2 seems to have very good compatibility, with only a couple problematic games they are working on, so in the end, good that they did it that way.
I think it’s because the market changed around them. When the 3DS launched they were one of the only companies providing decent BC. Now, everyone does it and people expect games to actually play better on the new devices.
Still a surprise that Nintendo got the message, but with the dozen first party games that got free patches it was clear this was a new era for them. I’m playing Pokemon Violet right now after beating Scarlet a few years ago and it’s like a whole new game on Switch 2, all the performance issues are just gone.
