sp3ctr4l, do games w Shortly After Xbox Game Pass Prices Spiked, the Page to Cancel Game Pass Subscriptions Was Overwhelmed

… and here is yet another opportunity I have to post the same comment as I have been doing for the past 6+ months:

People still use Microsoft products?!

null,
@null@lemmy.nullspace.lol avatar

Nope. Nobody uses them.

sp3ctr4l,

I literally cannot imagine why they would, and I used to work for them.

null,
@null@lemmy.nullspace.lol avatar

Hardly anyone does

psx_crab,

Your comment really just shout “i’m living under a rock!”

sp3ctr4l,

Yep, me with my years of working for MSFT, playing their games, configuring their software and using it at large businesses… and then realizing its all fucking overpriced broken garbage from first hand experience, and then replacing it all with open sourcr shit both at home and at work…

Yep, I really am sound like live under rock.

psx_crab,

Nobody care about your credentials though, your “people still use microsoft product” comment is the one that sounds like you’re living under a rock.

whereyaaat,

I think he’s just not an idiot like most of the people who are finally cancelling their subscriptions.

I know, it’s rare to find someone who isn’t eager to be ripped off.

dukemirage,

Unfortunately the only music software I’m somewhat productive in runs only on Windows or Mac, and I really can’t afford Apple’s hardware prices. So it’s either using WIndows, or being very limited at a very dear creative outlet.

sp3ctr4l,

You can run most Windows programs on linux.

WINE/Proton.

dukemirage,

I know, but DAWs are notoriously difficult to run and there are problems with most plugins.

sp3ctr4l,

Thats a fair point, DAWs are nightmares.

Hrm. I would offer a linux alternative, but I also know how people learn a DAW like an instrument and changing to a new would actually be quite an undertaking, and yeah, lots of various effects and such that… really only work that one specific way on your specific setup.

SolidShake, do games w EVE Frontier Goes Public Today with Founder Access: New Era

From the trailer… Why is this game being made? And who is it for? It just looks like regular eve but maybe without skill injections. I’ve also never heard of this game before so I guess I’ll see if I can find more info on it.

tburkhol,

They keep trying to find new ways to monetize the Eve lore, but no one plays Eve for the lore. And the people who are into Eve’s unique kind of economy-battle simulator don’t seem like they’re particularly interested in first-person-view type alternatives. I suspect it will dribble about for a while, then go the way of Dust 514 and Valkyrie.

bogosort,

Frontier is not Vanguard. Frontier is a blockchain based survival game (whatever that actually means), Vanguard is the FPS extraction shooter.

SkunkWorkz, do games w Nintendo Switch 2 Launches on June 5th Worldwide; 1080p Screen With 120 FPS and HDR Support, Docked Mode 4K Resolution Support Confirmed

Bet they priced it that high to get ahead of any tariffs that might affect them. Consumers really don’t like to see price hikes right around a launch. Plus they still want to milk the Switch 1 since they probably have a very healthy profit margin on that machine. This price makes the Switch 1 look very appealing for people who still haven’t bought one.

bluegreenwookie,

It’s about 100 bucks more than the og switch… theres 24% tariff. 24% of 450 is 108. Math checks out for the physical copy of games too.

It’s too close to be a coincidence

samus12345,

Then why does the rest of the world, who don’t have tariffs on Japan, have to pay those prices as well?

bluegreenwookie,

Idk about the whole world. I did look up the price for japan It’s 340 bucks in Japan.

llii,

It’s $515 including tax in Germany. It’s too much for my taste.

samus12345,

Yes, Japan got the only exception because Nintendo knows the price sucks and they want to make sure it sells well in their home country. Mind you, this is a special region-locked Switch that only supports Japanese. A non-region-locked Switch that costs more will also be available there.

samus12345,

Okay, but why are they charging $80 for a digital game, which tariffs don’t apply to?

Lumiluz,

I believe the tariffs do apply to digital goods as well depending where the server is.

Either way, the main reason would be because of digital was cheaper it would cannibalize physical sales.

samus12345,

How could it? It’s just data, no physical goods are being imported. Do tariffs apply to phone calls from other countries?

Lumiluz,

Don’t know, use internet these days, but in ye old days taxes sort of applied to long distance calls in a way so I’m unsure

BussyCat,

It doesn’t matter if it’s data, tariffs are meant to be protectionist so you could easily say that since Nintendo is headquartered in Japan or because the majority of their workers are in Japan or because their name sounds vaguely Japanese that all sales of their product in insert country here has to pay an additional 10% tax

samus12345,

I don’t THINK that’s how tariffs work - I’m pretty sure it’s physical goods only - but I’m no expert, so I guess we’ll see.

BussyCat,

They currently don’t affect digital goods but there is no actual reason they couldn’t make one that does we are in some truly interesting times

Asafum, do gaming w Star Citizen Expose Paints a Fairly Bleak Picture: 'There's No Actual Focus on Getting the Game Done'

“Earlier this year, Microsoft was given a brief presentation for Squadron 42, CIG’s spin-off campaign of Star Citizen that consists of around 20 different chapters (levels) of various lengths. It’s understood that the plan for Squadron 42 is to get it out of the door as soon as possible, with directors of the company hoping the influx in cash will sustain Star Citizen’s development and help to push Squadron 42 as a multi-game series, which will see the game’s story span over several different episodes. As for when Squadron 42 will launch, I wouldn’t want to guess, but it’s understood that the game has only just made it to its “feature complete” stage, despite the claims last year.”

Nonononononono… Microsoft means gutting the game in every way possible to get it to run on the Xbox toaster edition…

As for the end of that, thankfully they gave a release window today (2026) I hope most of this isn’t true though. What they want to make is seriously impressive

Good, it’s the one thing that kept me a long time from finishing the game after chapter 1. I only wrapped up the main story last week, after not having played for like 2 years lol. The main story of the game isn’t even that very long actually, or at least chapters 2 and 3, and the open-world content got repetitive very quickly.

Pxtl, do games w Starfield Is Seemingly Missing Entire Stars (the local 'sun') When Running On AMD Radeon GPUs
@Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

Ugh. A part of me wants to give AMD a chance for my next upgrade and push back against Nvidia’s near-monopoly of GPUs but I really don’t want to deal with how everything kinda-sorta works on Radeons.

ruckblack,

I’ve exclusively been on AMD since like 2015 and my GPUs “kinda-sorta working” has not been my experience at all lol. Literally have never had brand-specific problems. The only brand-specific issues I’ve had were trying to get my laptop with an Nvidia GPU to work properly under Linux.

Sharkwellington,

I have a suspicion that developers do less testing, optimization, and bugfixing for AMD cards due to reduced market share and that’s why more of these brand-specific coding errors slip through for them. It’s unfortunate but I can’t deny I’ve seen some weird bugs in my time.

Pxtl,
@Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh of course. I don’t actually blame AMD for those kinds of bugs. But it’s the reality as a user, at least in my experience… but it’s been like stupid long time since I’ve used a machine with an AMD card.

Indicah,

Some games are built specifically for AMD from the ground up and have been optimized like crazy. Depends on the game and the devs mostly. And let’s not forget that if devs want it to run well on PS5 and Xbox Series x/s, then they better have good AMD optimization.

darkeox,

How can an AMD sponsored game that litteraly runs better on all AMD GPU vs their NVIDIA counterpart, doesn't embark any tech that may unfavor AMD GPU can be less QA-ed on AMD GPUs because of market share?

This game IS better optimized on AMD. It has FSR2 enabled by default on all graphics presets. That particular take especially doesn't work for this game.

Squirrel,
@Squirrel@thelemmy.club avatar

And, being Bethesda, it’s not like bugs are unexpected.

JJROKCZ,

I’ve been red only in my rig for over a decade and the only problems I’ve had are that I play the same games as everyone else perfectly fine and I have more money in my wallet due to not spending as much on parts. That and the bulldozer generation CPUs heated my house like crazy, there’s no denying that lol

XTornado, (edited )

Ugh… the last part is still happening? Like are the new CPUs also so hot or whatever would somebody call it?

I am tempted to build a new PC all AMD for costs alone although the AM4 probably won’t last as long as the Am3 did sadly. But the summer is already terrible with my Intel… no need for more heat.

JJROKCZ,

No bulldozer chips have been gone for like 6-7 years. They last two ryzen generations have been far more energy/heat efficient than intel. Ryzen is the better choice by far right now

ninjan,

Current Intel is worse than current AMD for CPU heat and Nvidia is currently cooler than AMD on GPU. Also we’re on AM5. AM4 lived for a relatively long time, no indication that AM5 won’t be a long runner as well. Intel changes socket more often as well so for longevity AMD is almost always the best, except at the tail end of a socket.

Resolved3874,

Huh. Didn’t even know they replaced am4 until this comment 😂 my am4 ryzen 5 paired with an rx6700xt still does everything I want it to do. And if it starts slacking I have plenty of upgrading left to do.

Frog-Brawler,
@Frog-Brawler@kbin.social avatar

I’ve exclusively used AMD GPU’s since building my first PC 27 years ago. I’m not aware of things “kinda-sorta” not working.

You make it sound like nvidia has never pushed out a kinda sorta works driver.

I wanna see what the price is and what reviewers think of the screen and I might get one and sell my Switch OLED.

However, with these game prices I sure as hell am not getting any games, I‘ll play through my backlog games which I‘ll also check whether and which will get updates. It‘d be really nice if the games I have that play at 30 fps would play at 60 and at 1080p native. Maybe I’ll get physical copies of Switch 2 games heavily discounted later on.

zalgotext,

Maybe I’ll get physical copies of Switch 2 games heavily discounted later on.

Later on, as in, in like 30 years? Assuming physical Switch 2 games don’t become prized collector’s items like every other Nintendo consoles’ physical games

Cataphract,

cough amiibo cough

seriously though, Nintendo knows what they’re doing with their new limited scarcity tactics with trying to stay relevant. I think you’ll be able to find physical SNES games easier than switch 2 games in 30 years.

samus12345,

At $80-$90 for physical editions, I wouldn’t count on the used market helping that much.
