Etterra, do gaming w Discord confirms it's moving toward 'becoming a public company' as it hires a former Activision executive as its new CEO

A former Activision CEO. Can you announce “hostility to our users” any louder, Discord?

Correct reaction, good on them.

Moobythegoldensock, do games w The specter of a GTA 6 delay haunts the games industry: 'Some companies are going to tank' if they guess wrong, says analyst

While at one point GTA was my favorite series and I was absolutely hyped for GTA V, I’m not for this one. I kind of feel like I’m getting a little old for GTA.

Maybe I’ll change my mind after it releases and there’s a good chance I’ll play it anyway, but right now… meh.

Yeah. It’s pretty comfy.

And yet- my not caring about a video game enough to know whether or not it still existed is somehow wrong?

magic_lobster_party,

brucethemoose, do games w The Simple Act of Buying a Graphics Card Is the Defining Misery of PC Gaming in 2025

Funny thing about AMD is the MI300X is supposedly not selling well, largely because they priced gouge everything as bad as Nvidia, even where they aren’t competitive. Other than the Framework desktop, they are desperate to stay as uncompetitive in the GPU space as they possibly can, and not because the hardware is bad.

Wasn’t the Intel B580 a good launch, though? It seems to have gotten rave reviews, and it’s in stock, yet has exited the hype cycle.

SupraMario,

I looked for months for a b580 for my wifes pc. Couldn’t get one in stock for MSRP during that time. Finally caved and grabbed a 6900xt for $400 used. The intel cards are awesome, if you can get one. I do hope intel keeps up the mid range offerings at sane prices

Thorry84,

Well the B580 is a budget / low-power GPU. All the discussions going around are for flagship and high-end GPUs. Intel isn’t in that space yet, but we can hope they have a B7xx lined up which makes some waves.

newthrowaway20,

Intel b580 still showing out of stock everywhere I normally look.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

In stock, but not at the right price. MSRP is $250. The cards I’m seeing are $350 and up.

For $250 it’s a good card. For $350 not so much.

kerrigan778, do games w Baldur's Gate 3 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 show that the future of RPGs is in games way more ambitious, weird and unexpected than anything Bethesda and Bioware have to offer

jjjalljs, do gaming w After years of holding out hope, 2024 was the year I finally gave up on BioWare

I’ve been playing it and enjoying it. It could be better. Most games could. I had kind of low expectations, honestly. I’m glad it’s a single player game with no live-service and no season-pass. I’ll probably play it a second time. Runs kind of like crap, so I might play it again in the distant future where I have better hardware.

I imagine a lot of internet duds are mad about how there’s a queer subplot, but they can go fuck themselves. Unfortunately, this creates a problem where if some random guy is bashing it I have to try to suss out if they’re really just mad about queer stuff. It’s hard to tell. And because we’re all just emotional idiots, some people might be mad about the queer stuff and not realize it, and the words that come out of their mouth will be “boring characters”.

But also a lot of their games have problems. Mass Effect 3’s ending is so bad it has its own wikipedia page.

SnotFlickerman,

I think this is an important and distinctive point to be made, and I think it needs some background.

Who else remembers when EA won The Consumerists “Worst Company in America” two years running?

Well, I remember, but I also remember that EA actually placed the blame for winning Worst Company on something else entirely, and we have to be honest with ourselves and question whether this sentiment was real and we ignored it to our detriment.

consumerist.com/2013/04/05/…/index.html

This is part of what EA CEO Peter Moore had to say when EA won “Worst Company” a second year in a row:

In the past year, we have received thousands of emails and postcards protesting against EA for allowing players to create LGBT characters in our games. This week, we’re seeing posts on conservative web sites urging people to protest our LGBT policy by voting EA the Worst Company in America.

I remember at the time thinking this was pure deflection. Now I’m not so sure.

I mean, they won the awards in 2012 and 2013 and then Gamergate happened in 2014/2015. Seems pretty tied together, to me.

ampersandrew, do games w Critical Role's plans to make a videogame have become an 'active pursuit', says CEO Travis Willingham, after almost 10 years of growing a D&D campaign into a full-on franchise
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Critical Role could always licence another official D&D game with Hasbro…but my Insight check’s telling me that they might try and spin up something out of Daggerheart.

Eh, I hope not. I’m not really liking what I see in Daggerheart’s hope/fear system and how it interferes with initiative, especially. Plus it reminds me of that subplot from Donnie Darko.

It’s already a game that uses cards, after all, and I can very easily see its systems making for a solid turn-based tactics game. Or maybe they’re not gonna start small, and just barrel full steam ahead into an ambitious CRPG

I’ll bet you can make a small CRPG for the cost of what their merch store brings in in a year, akin to the Kickstarter era from a decade ago, and that’s if they want to be cautious with their spending. Given the layoffs of the past two years, they’ve likely had their pick of any talent they wanted to hire to realize whatever it is they’re building.

jonathan,

Larian told Hasbro to fuck off for a BG3 DLC and/or sequel, so there’s definitely an opening for someone to pick up that torch. That said, I also think they’ll go with their own system and brand.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Larian told Hasbro to fuck off for a BG3 DLC and/or sequel

That’s definitely not how I’ve ever seen it framed.

I think Critical Role has an incentive to use their own system, but it’s not one that I’m excited about.

Maalus,

That’s exactly how they framed it. They cited reasons as worker burnout and Hasbro / the game system. They wanted to be done with BG3. Studios don’t really announce that the second they finish the game.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

It wasn’t the second they finished the game. It was after working on DLC for months, which was after a 6 year development cycle. That’s not the same as telling Hasbro to fuck off. That’s having the luxury of a war chest that means they can afford to do the less lucrative thing and make whatever is going to keep their talent happiest.

iAmTheTot,

I liked what I played of Daggerheart, and its hope/fear. I just don’t think it would translate well into s video game. They’re very different mediums and I don’t think it’s crunchy enough to play well as a video game.

Ironically, I think a Critical Role game doesn’t need to really be based on any ttrpg. Could just be an action rpg.

Khrux,

Long before ZA/UM closed, I was certain that we’d never see a new game of that quality again from the same studio.

I’m not confident any of these new teams will pull it off, but I’d rather have four attempts than one.

secret300,

Love gog but fuck them for spamming my email. I found out to claim the new games it’ll auto subscribe you to the news letter. So I stopped claiming the games. But still I get emails for promotions and crap. More annoying then freaking scam callers. I’ve unsubscribed every time I get one and stopped claiming free games. I’m so close to just cut my loses and delete my account but I feel like that still won’t stop those parasites

xapr,

How weird, I wonder if there’s something wrong with my GOG account? I don’t think I’ve received an email from them in years?

catloaf,

No, if you claim the giveaways you have to subscribe to their newsletter. That’s all. If you aren’t doing that, you’ll almost never get an email.

xapr,

I see, that makes sense. Thanks!

secret300,

Ye that’s why I stopped claiming games

bread,

You should not be getting promotional emails if you opt out, so something is wrong with your account/settings specifically. Contact them or filter your emails.

That’s what I figured… Some bug on their end or something because every time I get one I unsubscribe. I plan to just delete my account and go back to a mix of pirating and steam
