tal, (edited ) do gaming w What are some games you find yourself frequently coming back to?
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, Dwarf Fortress. Highly-replayable, open-world and they keep being developed, so when you come back, there’s new stuff.

Skyrim, Fallout 4. Same idea, but the modders have added a lot of content.

Some of the city-builders, like Tropico 5. I play for a while, get tired, uninstall, but tend to come back, because the game is replayable.

Chase the Sun and Nova Drift are action games that I have spent some time away from and then come back and played. Nova Drift has seen regular development.

Pinball sims. I think that one can only play so much pinball, but I find myself thinking “I’d like to play a pinball game” down the line and reinstall.

I think that most of the games have some common characteristics:

  • Didn’t live-or-die based on their technology or graphics, because they’re invariably obsolete by the time I’ve come back.
  • Need to be highly-replayable. I’ve played games with story, like Fallout: New Vegas but I don’t really go back to play them for the story (though I’ll concede that specifically Fallout: New Vegas does have multiple paths to explore). They can’t be appealing because of a surprising or tense plot or a plot twist.
  • Often see continued development or modding, so there’s some reason to go back and see what’s there (though pinball would be a notable exception…you don’t go back for new content).

Has to be either free or have a free way to get it

There are good games out there, but outside of a few exceptions you can’t get a good mobile game for free. If you have netflix, the netflix games selection has some good games, I’d especially recommend Into the Breach. If you have google play pass, there are a lot of good games there was well. As far as truly free good games go, Shattered Pixel Dungeon and Hoplite are the only ones that comes to mind.

If you’re willing to spend some money to get something worth your time, I’d recommend Slice & Dice (has a free demo), Reventure, Super Hexagon, VVVVV, Dicey Dungeons, Dead Cells (plays surprisingly well on mobile, play pass includes all DLC), Krumit’s Tale, King of Dragon’s Pass, and Star Traders Frontiers.

Moonrise2473, do gaming w Super Mario Maker 1 is now beaten!

I’m surprised that on a system that was completely hacked and never patched, only a single player cheated on an online game

chloyster,

Well I suppose it depends on your definition of cheated 😛

It’s true that the community did not know a tas existed until today. So really only 1 actual tas (that we know of) was made. There were however a lot of glitches (and I believe some hacks) that made it into levels that either: got deleted by Nintendo from the servers, or became unbeatable due to the game getting patched and the glitch no longer being possible.

A slightly unrelated but also interesting point. A ton of levels that were uploaded to the game were deleted by Nintendo. The reason being that in Mario maker 1 only, Nintendo would delete any levels that didn’t get a star (equivalent to mm2’s “like”) after 1 month being uploaded. The numbers that the team 0% discord reports are:

Total remaining uploaded levels: 10,610,412

Total ever uploaded levels: 68,550,789

So, nearly 60 million levels that were uploaded were deleted

Spiritfarer. Probably one of the most touching games I’ve ever played. What Remains of Edith Finch. Stardew Valley. Firewatch.

BenLeMan, do games w What are the best indie games you've ever played?

Return of the Obra Dinn. City Game Studio. Until the Last Plane and Full Metal Sergeant (by the same dev).

To the Moon - gonna have my partner play it here soon so they can cry from it too

RizzRustbolt, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?

I got the System Shock remake.

Sebastrion, do games w What are the best indie games you've ever played?

The “To the moon” games. They are heavly Story based but they are also one of the few games where I cried like a toodler.

refurbishedrefurbisher,

I only played the first one, and it just dodn’t have as much of an impact on me as I was hoping for. OMORI on the other hand…

Tolstoshev, do games w What are the best indie games you've ever played?

Spelunky. My Vita was basically a Spelunky machine.

Hubi, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?

I bought Project: Snowblind and E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy for a total of 3 Euros. I’ve been replaying the entire Deus Ex Series over the last couple of months and these two games are kinda similar in nature and I’ve been wanting to play them for ages.

Midnight Suns maybe, haven’t pulled the trigger yet

Albbi,

I’m the same. It’s sitting in my cart.

aStonedSanta,

The combat and deck building is fun as hell. The story and everything else can fuck off imo lol

MrBusiness,

Aye, funny seeing it as a jrpg. The downtime gameplay doesn’t really suit the rest of the game. Would have rather seen an XCOM setup with more cutscenes, but also I do love the Abbey itself that place is a dream home.

!Also my favorite team is probably blade, wolvie, morb. Itsa lotta bleed!<

AProfessional,

Just a heads up to those interested, it’s part of this months PS+ Extra too.

ABCDE, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?

Likely nothing, maybe one title if it’s shorter and I’m done with Balatro for a while.

Pra, (edited )

I can’t beat the goddamn black deck, I don’t know what’s wrong with me 😢

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I have managed to beat the black deck. Vagabond for a lot of death cards, shoot the moon to make those death cards queens, and an early triboulet led me to victory. I wish all fellow balatroers a pleasant evening and a lucky night

ABCDE,

I’ve done it on the Magic Deck; I do think it has a lot of luck involved at the higher stakes, sadly, it could definitely do with a bit of balance or engineering to make each run possible (as Slay the Spire always seems).

There is technically an unwinnable sts seed

simonced,

Broooo, that black deck is harder than the next stakes on other decks, it’s insane! I need to try again though, it unlocks a new deck and I want them haha

Blackmist, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

An actual boomer shooter would be like Space Invaders.

But at least it’s got a name I suppose so if you like them you can find them and differentiate them from all your online XP bar tutorial modern bullshit.

I just think of it like boom as in explosions. Boom-boom shooty-shoot; or boomer shooter if you prefer brevity.

peak_dunning_krueger, do games w Favourite developers

Zacktronics

have made a few really really good programming / puzzle games.

Brace yourselfes

made crypt of the necrodancer and phantom brigade , both of which are really good ideas and if you haven’t checked them out, you should.
