The site that you’ve linked blocked me for some reason, and cost/benefit in Malta is bound to be different from the one here in LatAm, but I’ve recently built a midrange-ish computer, so might as well list what I bought for reference.

  • CPU - Ryzen 7 5700X3D. Good cost/benefit ratio, and rather good performance. I had to buy a third party cooler as the CPU doesn’t come with one, so keep that in mind. I considered the Ryzen 5 5600 for budget reasons, too; it might be an option if you want to make the build cheaper.
  • Mobo - Gigabyte B550M Aorus Elite. If coupled with the above you need to Q-Flash update the BIOS, but that was relatively painless. So far it’s working great, can’t complain about it.
  • RAM - I went for 2*16GB instead, mostly to future-proof my build. The brand is Apacer Nox, I didn’t find people complaining about it and it had a reasonable price.
  • SSD - Adata 480GB.
  • PSU - Gamdias Cyclops M1-750B, 750W. Frankly my method to look for a PSU was to look for 700~800W ones in a local forum, with the word “porcaria” (rubbish, shit) alongside it so I could see complains, then I found people actually praising this one.

If I convert my overall costs from reals to euros it was around €500, but keep in mind that I didn’t buy a new HDD or a new GPU. GPUs in special are relatively expensive here, I’m hoping that the prices go down next year.

sleepybisexual,

Thank you

Gamers_mate,

The site blocked me as well. Probably to protect it from being overloaded since its a local shop for malta and probably would have trouble handling traffic from all over the world?

Duke_Nukem_1990, (edited ) do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of October 20th

I recently started playing WoW again. This time on Turtle WoW and it’s really impressive with how much care the devs expanded on vanilla. Love it, really.

Also started playing OSRS again since I hate my job and will only do the absolute bare minimum going forth. In between it’s time to grind lol

DrSteveBrule,

I love Turtle WoW! It feels like one of the last MMOs that really encourage working with other players

Duke_Nukem_1990,

Welllll I am doing a hardcore run so my grouping up is limited ^^

If you haven’t tried them, give Ori a go. I finished Ori and the Blind Forest, it was amazing. Then I went on to Ori and the Will of the Wisps which builds on the first one. So in the first one you’ll be unlocking stuff and in the second one you can still do all those things and some extra stuff you’ll have to select according to the situation.

Beware though, some of the things they expect you to do can be challenging.

Play on PC if your monitor supports HDR, otherwise Switch’ll do fine.

Hydra_Fk, do gaming w Can anyone help me identify this Xbox controller?

Did the game dark souls have a combo release?

theskyisfalling,

Not that I knew of and apparently it is a custom made one as per the other responses. Til

Dark Age of Camelot, heard it was one of the best MMOs of its time. By the time I heard of it and had a PC I could play it on, most of the player base had moved on to other games.

Zahille7, do gaming w What game do you wish you got into as a kid?

Careful, if you play Morrowind and the other Elder Scrolls games, a lot of other RPGs won’t feel nearly as satisfying to play.

There aren’t many games where you can see a thing and just walk to it, or go into a random house and see (and interact with) all the shit they have from forks and plates to baskets and books. Speaking of books, how many other games are there that have actual books you can read in-game, that explain lore and have poems and plays like we have IRL?

And that’s not even getting into builds and play styles. You can be a tanky heavy weapons expert who just steamrolls everything in a couple hits, or you can be a glass cannon archmage blasting dudes left and right; you can also be an entire mix of all the things if you want. Be a magic tanky stealth archer that takes what they want when they want. Also you can kill essential NPCs in Morrowind (in the later games they just get knocked out).

I love the Elder Scrolls games, jank and all. They’re absolutely fantastic at putting you in an atmospheric world that feels lived in.

Tarquinn2049, (edited )

Yeah, they get alot of shit for how buggy they are, but they are trying to do a thousand things well. They probably have literal millions of bugs along the way, but only manage to solve the 999000 easiest, quickest, or most obvious ones before launch.

There is a reason they are still consistently best sellers.

dwindling7373, do gaming w What game do you wish you got into as a kid?

DotA and Counterstrike for sure.

I tried the first but it was unapproachable, the second I think I had to pay for so it was a no-no.

To expand a little I’ve been playing moba for more than a decade now, but I wish I played them for even longer (and not waste time on that slob that is wow), and I like CS, but played it very little because I’ve never played anything fps and so I can’t enjoy it the way I’d like to.

I’d like to also say Dwarf Fortress but I’m afraid I would have turned out even weirder than I am.

catloaf, do games w Experiencing weird rubberbanding and disconnects on lan connection. [Satisfactory]

You’re going to need to describe the symptoms more.

haui_lemmy,

What happens is that I get rubberbanding (I go somewhere, build something, get set back like 30 seconds and my stuff is not built), loosing my connection like once every two hours or something. My wife plays with me and has similar issues.

The logs sometimes show „tick took longer than anticipated“ or something, which would indicate a performance issue but since the cpu and the ram arent even used properly, I assume it might be limited somehow.

catloaf,

Sounds like your connection to the server is dropping. I’d investigate it from a network perspective.

haui_lemmy,

Hmmm… that makes sense. I‘ll check. Thank you for the suggestion.

MangoPenguin,

Generally tick length messages are purely due to CPU limitations.

What hardware is this running on?

haui_lemmy,

Xeon 4 core, 4 threads, 16 G DDR4 ram, onboard graphics.

MangoPenguin,

Do you know what CPU it is? Xeon with 4 threads can range from something so old it can barely run most modern software, to a fairly recent CPU that’s much faster.

haui_lemmy,

E3 1220v3 3.5 ghz

MangoPenguin,

That’s on the slower end, but I’ve run a satisfactory server on similar hardware before without too many issues.

Is the storage SSD based?

Do you have all 4 cores/threads allocated to the server?

What about all 16GB of RAM? Satisfactory needs a good amount.

haui_lemmy,

I’m monitoring the cpu and ram and so far the server isnt utilizing it except short bursts which dont max out anything. i’ll try and optimize the network first and then go for performance. i suppose its a multi stage issue by now. will update on the matter.

MangoPenguin,

Most game servers are primarily single threaded, so you won’t see all 4 cores at 100%.

Droechai, do gaming w Recommend me your favorite linear games!

The Thief series are linear and awesome. The third game, Deadly Shadows are the easiest to get into (with an almost mandatory patch mod called Sneaky Upgrade) and if the story whets your appetite go back and play the others in order.

MrScottyTay, do games w Are there any recent-ish single player, complete games that are similar to Rise of Nations and would work on Mac or at least on WINE?

I’ve not played it yet but beyond all reason is a new rts that’s free and i don’t think it’s “free to play” free either but i might be wrong about that

While I am not an RTS buff, depending on your internet connection from this Mac’s location, Geforce Now could greatly expand your options (basically most Windows games). You would be playing the games on a cloud server (and could switch to local saves if you ever get a Windows PC)

Brok The Investigator. There are multiple endings, but each different ending has a linear enough progression, even if the first time you have no clue as to what ending you’ll get. The only thing you need to do for different endings is making different choices.

Simple enough game set in a world where the poor, slummers, live in the polluted, rundown slums while the rich, drummers, live under the high quality dome. You play as a crocodile (alligator?) who is a detective, a slummer named Brok who lives with his teenage cat son Graff. Not saying much more because spoilers, even though the drummer and slummer and the polluted world thing are kinda minor spoilers despite learning about them real quick in chapter 1.

The occasional puzzles aren’t too hard to figure out, at least I thought so for all but one. And if you don’t like the combat mode, I’m pretty sure there is a way to turn it off, though I’m not sure how it affects gameplay/choices. Though, the upcoming DLC (whenever it releases) doesn’t look like it’s gonna be linear since it’s all about the games combat system and adding bonus challenges to fights. So I’d probably avoid that if you aren’t playing the game for the combat.

People listed Mirrors Edge, and I would like to also recommend it. It might take some time to adjust to the controls but it’s fun! I replay it a lot. I’ve lost count but I’ve been replaying it since release.

Titanfall 2 was a fun campaign. Also cool movement mechanics.

One game that I think got average ish scores but I enjoyed was Pneuma: Breath of Life. Idk why but I thought the puzzles were kinda fun and it was pretty enough.

The Stanley Parable

Catherine

(Kinda visual novel ish) AI Somnium files was fun.

Arcadium 1 is about as linear as it gets. Its kind of like that game Aero Fighter from the 90s, mixed with Space Invaders. Just shoot the aliens and dodge their shots. On the way, there are gems and power ups that can make your future forays more rewarding.

This is a mobile game – it’s available on iOS and Android.
