Also, the security manager sold his shares right before making the public statement about banning Schlepp. Isn’t insider trading even more illegal than child slavery?

Honytawk, do games w Games Where Nothing Happens (SPOILERS for various game plots)

The Last Of Us.

The entire plot is about getting this girl to a location, only to get there, kill everyone and leave again. They could have stayed at home and the result would have been the same.

Same with The Mandalorian, the ending in Boba Fett completely invalidated the entire show. But that isn’t a video game.

Englishgrinn,

I mean you’re right, but it makes sense in context in both cases because the plot, or maybe better to say the driving motivation for action by the characters, isn’t the real story.

TLOU isn’t the story of two survivors trying to reach a goal- thats set dressing. It’s the story of a man who lost his daughter being given a chance to confront his grief and grow close with another young woman who would be the same age. The relationship growing, their mutual guilt and relief and joy in finding that familial connection in a dying world IS the story. And the climax isn’t Joel shooting 50 more people, it’s when he chooses her over the whole world. Even when thats obviously the wrong choice.

From a plot view, nothing has changed. What actually “happened” was entirely between Ellie and Joel. But lots of stories are like that. If you released a movie where a grieving man connected with his adopted, formerly abused or neglected, daughter- that could be a good movie and you wouldn’t say “nothing happened” because it would be honest and upfront with its stakes. But fewer people would play that as a game so they have to obfuscate their actual story with apocalypse and zombie trappings.

Blueberrydreamer,

Didn’t play TLoU, but if you didn’t catch it from the start, the point of The Mandalorian was clearly always about Grogu becoming ‘the Mandalorian’. Just cause it didn’t go the way you expected doesn’t mean nothing happened.

pirateKaiser,

I think this highlights the big problem with Op’s question: it’s not all about plot, character development can be as satisfying and as important even if the world objectively doesn’t change.

Edit: by this i mean your point on The last of us

prole,

The Last of Us was more about Joel and Ellie’s relationship growing during their travels.

Had the hospital scene occurred within the first like ten hours of the game, Joel would have had no problem sacrificing her for a potential cure.

Doing the right thing for the wring reason if you ask me. I don’t think it was ever a good idea to sell incest games in the first place, but banning them because they make payment processors uncomfortable ? Fuck that.

I don’t want payment processors to be the arbiters of what we are allowed to play !

Gaylactus,

While I personally have absolutely no incestual relationship desires, the only rational reason be against incest is really because there is the consanguinity issue, which can result in genetic deficiencies. Same-sex incest is for example, legal in Ireland and Germany.

Morally speaking… I too find it icky, but I’m pretty sure this is the result of how we were raised to think of it as being icky. As long as everyone involved able to legally consent, and there is no abusive power dynamic in the relationship, I really don’t judge. To each their own! Just don’t involve me in it! LOL

kungen,

Even opposite-sex incest became legal in Sweden a couple years back. The law previously said “forbidden to have sexual intercourse with a sibling”, but they changed it to “forbidden to have vaginal intercourse with a sibling”. No idea if it was the (right-wing) government’s intention to legalize gay-brother-sex at the same time, but here we are.

paultimate14,

After the last decade or more of people complaining about greedy publishers forcing devs to release half-baked messes too early (Cyberpunk, No Man’s Sky, etc), it feels like I’m living in a bizarro world to see so much criticism for a publisher delaying a game to (allegedly) make it better.

drmoose,

Subnautica 2 must be in a pretty dire spot for this to happen. I guess we’ll see as the story unrolls and early access comes eventually but I’ve met many successful people who stopped caring after they made it big (which is fine but then just quit) so I really wouldn’t be surprised if the publisher is right here.

pory,
@pory@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah. If this is a case of “publisher buys out studio, replaces leadership, runs game into the ground” or “leadership of indie studio sells out, coasts on gold parachute, provides no leadership to the game’s dev team” or anything in between… The game won’t be good. It certainly won’t be good in early access. It’s an easy “skip unless it turns out to be completely mindbogglingly phenomenal on launch” for me. A downgrade from its prior status of “the only thing that’ll prevent me from buying this after early access is if it’s complete dogshit”.

onslaught545,

You do have to remember that the devs had just as much of a reason to push out a half-baked game as the publisher did for delaying the game.

The bonus situation makes this case different from the others. Both scenarios are equally likely.

paultimate14,

Also a great point.

I’m not ruling anything out at this point. It could be a classic case of a greedy corporation pushing out the real artists in order to exploit the art. It could be that the devs (specifically the 3 guys involved in the lawsuit) got lazy after they got paid. It could be both, neither, something else entirely. Honestly with how things go these days I’m just grateful there hasn’t been anything distasteful enough tl give me qualms about playing Subnautica.

Is that why they left “from” out of the title?

    r00ty,

They didn't close it. They provided an answer early. That as they see it, existing trade and consumer law should cover games and they don't plan on carving out extra legislation for it but they will "keep an eye on it".

Now it is over 100k, it doesn't actually mean anything more than they "might" debate it in parliament.

Now, don't get me wrong. I signed the petition, and I think they SHOULD look into it. But, my old cynical bones tell me that even if they do have a debate in parliament. It will be at a time when there will be 5 MPs in there, who will have nothing to say on the matter and it will be swept under the rug with a further canned statement drawn up by some civil servant in whitehall talking about consumer law just like the statement before.

Most western governments are on the side of industry, and that includes game developers. I cannot imagine they care about this subject and will do the bare minimum lip service to move past it.

    I hope I'm wrong.

I do have a bit more hope for the European parliament. Just a little. They do seem to be a bit more pro-consumer. That is the one that matters most IMO.

    Rentlar,

If the EU petition makes it, then it will provide the UK petition support too as part of whatever debate goes on about it.

    echodot,

The UK petition ends before the EU petition so my guess is that they’ll give us some canned response before the end of the month. In their heads that will end the discussion.

    Rentlar,

Parliament will have 7 days after it closes before their planned summer recess. You think they will work that quickly to churn out a boilerplate debate?

No, it’s misinformation and people who uncritically repeat things without verification.

I’ve had the game installed for years and have to manually apply updates, there hasn’t been one. e: I just checked, last update in Steam is dated 2022

All they’ve done is make their TOS universal across all of their games.

e: adding this from last post. TL;DR: People are spreading misinformation

So, let’s look into the claims.

    Here’s the TOS:

There is nothing about root level access.

In addition, if you look at the patch history for Borderlands 2 on SteamDB, you will see that the last update for the game was 4 August 2022.

So, to be clear: There is nothing in the TOS that requires you to submit to a rootkit and there is no spyware that has been added. The comment in the OP is simply wrong.

Poopfeast420, do games w Doom the dark ages...
    @Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I’m currently playing the game, got like a handful of levels left. It’s a good game, but with the way the Doom games have evolved and changed over the time, I don’t think you can really say “if you like that Doom, you’ll like this Doom.”

I definitely enjoy the gameplay of Eternal more, but Dark Ages is really good.

The feel of running around is great. You sound massive, your jumps create shockwaves and kill enemies. If you’ve played Boltgun, it’s like that.

The shield is feels great. The charge is awesome, just like the Meathook was in Eternal to get right next to your enemy, and fodder demons just explode on impact.

Parries feel good, but are extremely easy. The timing is super forgiving and the range is massive.

I think a big thing, that not many people are talking about, are the difficulty sliders. You can change so many things, but ID just ignores 90% of them with their presets. You can change so much stuff, and make it feel like a completely different game. Crank up the game speed and just zoom around. Increase your and the enemies damage, so it’s all about dodging, or you get one-shot. Make the projectiles slow, but a lot more deadly.

There’s still some ammo management, but it’s not like Eternal, not even like 2016. Your melee attack, that you can use for the execute drops ammo, just like the Chainsaw, but you’re using it regularly anyway. Some guns also have upgrades that shooting demons with it also drops ammo for the weapon.

The game is a lot more story heavy, but just like in Eternal you can just skip it and not read the Codex entries.

The mech stuff is alright, but pretty basic, but also really short segments. The dragon is cool in theory, but I really hate these parts, and they just drag on for far too long. Flying around just isn’t fun.

Weapons are pretty good, and I have some favorites. The normal Combat Shotgun with upgrades is great this time and not just outshined by the Super Shotgun immediately. That Ball-on-a-Chain gun is also really nice, with some cool upgrades. Because you don’t really have any ammo issues if you use the melee regularly, I’ve just used one gun for long stretches of time, because there’s just no reason real reason to switch, and you can just use what you want.

The devs always said in Dark Ages you’re like a tank, but with default settings on Nightmare difficulty, you’re made out of paper. Projectiles are extremely dangerous, and enemies like to spawn behind you and shoot you in the back. The game is actually not great on telling you where you’re getting attacked from, and there’s just always tons of enemies around and some deaths can be kinda frustrating.

Then there are also some minor UI/UX issues. You get small icons in the middle for your melee charges, but they don’t show the progress like in Eternal with the Blood Punch. There’s no dedicated Map button, just open your Dossier, which remembers your last screen, which is annoying, because you want that map 99% of the time. Sprinting has this terrible vignette effect around your screen, and you want to sprint all the time, but you can only disable all screen effects, which includes some stuff I’d like to see.

For some dumb reason, the Fast Travel option, at the end of a level has been removed, so if you miss a secret, you’ll have to play the level again. There’s also tons of points-of-no-return, so you’ll have to stare at the map constantly, to make sure you haven’t missed anything, which makes the lack of a map button so terrible.

After I’m done with my Nightmare run, I want to do another one, where I play around with the sliders a bit. I want to turn up the game speed, but will probably lower the damage and projectile speed to compensate.

    Paradox,
    @Paradox@lemdro.id avatar

Fwiw it shows the charge % to the next pip down next to the ammo counter

    Poopfeast420, (edited )
    @Poopfeast420@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yes, but it would still be nice to have in the middle.

I went back to check in Eternal, and I was wrong about that game showing the progress on the icons in the middle of the screen. Just like Dark Ages it just shows charges that are ready to use, and the progress in the full HUD on the edges of the screen. Seems like I just need to get good and look at the full HUD, like I did in Eternal.
