BonerMan, do games w Corporate greed is killing RuneScape

I think your need to do some inflation adjustment, their costs increase a lot as well. And raw “record profits” aren’t meaningful when not inflation adjusted.

Everything is getting more expensive, thats mostly not corporate greed (some of it is tbh) its just the general world economics being in a very big crisis from multiple world effecting events, covid, Russia attacking Ukraine, the fucking Suez channel ship thing (yes that shit actually effected world economics), the comeback of terrorism, the right wing people playing Russian spys for their own gains in all of the western world (super left as well, but they don’t have much power gladly) Chinas entire economy is going down the drain for many internal reasons. The World economy has long covid, untreated epilepsy and very bad hemorrhoids all at once basically.

Buttflapper,

I think your need to do some inflation adjustment, their costs increase a lot as well. And raw “record profits” aren’t meaningful when not inflation adjusted.

They added microtransactions to both Runescape 3 and Oldschool, bonds never existed back then, so now you can buy gold in game, which is huge insane revenue amount for them. World of Warcraft has never had to increase costs even once.

BonerMan,

eurogamer.net/world-of-warcraft-subscription-pric…

WOW did increase costs, is heavily monetized with micro transactions and thats basically state of the art for mmorpgs right now. The server and development costs are huge for such service games and a company needs to make profits, i don’t say there is no greed involved, but i do understand some of the decisions.

Buttflapper,

Ohh darn you’re right. I misremembered. Thought it was always 15. But yeah, I get the cost of running the game and all that stuff. Totally valid points.

BonerMan,

Yeah i also understand you that pushing micro transactions sucks for the players.

Buttflapper,

It’s honestly crazy how horrifically they monetized RS3. You’re spammed with login notifications for your free gambling opportunities. Idk what it is now but it was squeal of Fortune, then some weird chest opening game you get two keys from or you get them from just playing the game and at random. Met a guy who spent $3600 on getting his skills up. Unfathomable to me

BonerMan,

Oh wow, didn’t remember it being that bad. Sounds like its getting close to Diablo Immortals territory…

suburban_hillbilly, do games w Corporate greed is killing RuneScape

You do realize you’re the probelm right? The only vote that matters is the one you make with your wallet, and you voted the subscription hikes are ok.

BonerMan,

Typical .ml moment.

Buttflapper,

I don’t subscribe anymore. I unsubscribed with the other people who left when the subscription increase was announced

Meanwhile in osrs team they have open communication with the community, new content is released only if accepted by vast majority of players, no mtx or other major enshittification of games, the developers clearly very much care of the game and want to keep it running.

You can’t say that for vast majority of the game developers

Buttflapper,

Hmm idk… The community is mad half the time at the devs. The voting is awful and simply doesn’t work at all. They’re not a tight knit company anymore either, they’re owned by an investment company

DarkCloud, do gaming w Mechwarrior 5: Clans. It's wonderful. But I've hit a snag.

Can you eject from your mech like you could waaay back in Mech Warrior 2?

No. Unfortunately.

ClassifiedPancake, do gaming w What game do you wish you got into as a kid?

I played so many games back then I can’t really say I’ve missed too much. Maybe I should have looked more into games like Jagged Alliance or X-Com but I wasn’t into turn-based games back then. But I also didn’t care much about puzzle games as a kid and now I am and that’s ok. These days I don’t care about multiplayer games anymore, which I used to love.

AgentGrimstone, do gaming w What game do you wish you got into as a kid?

StarCraft. I played it, I liked it but never really invested time to get better at the game. My friends were really good and they would include me by putting me on the opposite team so I can backstab later in the match 😅

That’s actually same as me. I did play Diablo 2 tons of time. But that was just to finish the game with different characters and different skills combo.

Like one time with Amazon with bow skills, then next time with Amazon with Javelin skills. Also, since I couldn’t afford many games back then, I would just re-install it every few months or year or so, and play through it once or twice.

Though, to be completely fair, I didn’t even know you could keep playing after finishing the game. Thought it was some glitch that game restarted again 😀

So, not exactly same as you. I want to play with all the characters. At least once.

I'd honestly love to see them try a different take on Diablo. It won't happen since Blizzard is all about live service games these days, but I'd love to see a single-player, traditional RPG version of Diablo. Imagine if Larian got the rights to make a Diablo game.

RangerJosie,
@RangerJosie@lemmy.world avatar

I was talking with a dude last night about what I termed a “Diablo themed Skyrim”

Imagine going through Sancturary during one of these hell uprisings in first person. Would be wild.

Chozo,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm kinda surprised that there hasn't already been a Skyrim mod that does exactly this.

Hammocks4All,

That would be awesome. It’s funny to think how somewhat similar Diablo is to Skyrim except Diablo is bird’s eye view and Skyrim is 1st person.

tissek,

Have yet to play it but Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous does have some similar themes. If you haven’t looked at it already give it a glance.

Trail,

Path of exile is like a spiritual successor to d2:lod. Can play solo only, but requires online connection. Huge amount of content and complexity.

SanitationStation, do gaming w I can't enjoy Diablo anymore.

I can recommend Grim Dawn if you haven’t played it yet.

cordlesslamp, (edited )

Can you “grinding for better gears” in Grim Dawn? Or the loot doesn’t matter and you should just stick to the quests?

SanitationStation,

You can definitely grind. It’s not necessary for beating the game, but it’s helpful.

But I’m just halfway through my first run, so I’m not a expert. But it’s definitely a good replacement for Diablo so far.

Almost any, but I wish I had played Star Wars Galaxies in its prime. But any, really. I was not allowed to play almost any video games growing up. Except for Detective Barbie: Mystery of the Carnival Caper. And Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. Of, and Oregon Trail 2! Not 1. 2.

I played SWG as a kid, and I can tell you that it sucked. I think it would have been more fun if I’d played it as an adult.

RebekahWSD,
@RebekahWSD@lemmy.world avatar

A girl who have me a spork told me how her friend played the game and he was a hair dresser in game and once watched a battle between two jedi, when I asked her if I could be a chef in game.

I might have liked it, back then, but my tolerance for things was very high. Paying for a subscription was very veery low, being a young teen.

tetris11,
@tetris11@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve read this a few times and my brain just cant process what you’re saying. Do you write for Eric Andre?

RebekahWSD,
@RebekahWSD@lemmy.world avatar

I do not write for Eric Andre, but it sounds fun.

I am recounting an event that happened when Star Wars Galaxies was around.

A friends of mine comes to me and we start talking about Star Wars Galaxies. She tells me about her friend who plays, and the character he has who is a non combatant because I ask if I could be a chef or any other non combatant role. She says I can, using her friend as an example. She gives me the gift of a spork. Because we’re teenage girls and it’s random times.

I then explain I wouldn’t mind if the game is grindy or slow because my tolerance for that as a teenager was very high. But my ability to play the game at the time is hampered by my lack of money so I can’t pay the monthly fees. Or buy the game. Because I’m a kid.

tetris11,
@tetris11@lemmy.ml avatar

I think the spork through me off, but yep I get it now - thanks!

I have done several D2 playthroughs, but end up stopping part way through the barbarian tundra chapter, it’s somewhat boring.

Now I listen to Diablo 2 soundtrack, when I miss the game, especially the wilderness music, it slaps!

Blizzard make money extraction software now, not games. The lifecycle of their products starts with a complicated system of overlapping, interrelated components like events and currencies and battlepasses and sales and shops and services and items and subscriptions, and then they dress it up to look like a game.
