First and foremost it’s bold to put this out before Drag x Drive releases which is just weird enough to become its own thing. Second, even the owner Epic doesn’t even seem to know what to do with Rocket League because they seem to be trying to make it part of Fortnite. Thirdly, esports are everywhere, sorry not all of them look like legacy sports but that’s not a problem for people playing the games
Look man, as someone who thought Switch 2 mouse controls were a gimmick and has sunk 17 hours into Civ VII, I don’t feel confident enough to tell all these people that they are wrong. If I had been in college and was told people could get scholarships for NASCAR Soccer I would have laughed in your face. Being that cocky is asking to be wrong
I found it to be a beautifully frustrating experience. There clearly are a ton of layers and puzzles can help you solve other puzzles. I appreciate the effort it took to make it, but it doesn’t feel like it respects the effort it takes to play it. Here’s some of my frustrations:
At a certain point you should get a magic vacuum upgrade to pick up all common items in rooms. Hunting for gems and coins in rooms on my 25th day sucks and adds nothing
I should be able to move at least three times faster. Fuck, navigating the house is slow
It really sucks that the first time you “solve” the primary puzzle you actually can’t progress until you solve a separate other puzzle that is dependent on finding one room and then another, and that is not clearly indicated at all
While footsteps eventually become trivial it’s an annoying resource when you don’t have full control over the layout of the house. So you can build a maze through no fault of your own and then you don’t get the steps to explore them
Eventually there’s a special room you can pick every run. Why do you make me actually traverse to that room? It burns useless steps and again, is slow as fuck
Additionally, the only “permanent” room you can place (to my knowledge) you can get way too early. So if you put that in a crappy spot you just kinda fuck yourself for the rest of the game
Sometimes you will think you have solved a puzzle but need to assemble the rooms to implement the solution. So you can: spam runs and rooms to get lucky and find it, do normal runs and just hope you find it, try to manipulate RNG to maximize the chance of solving that puzzle. None of those are fun when you have a couple of solutions to try and you spend multiple in game days manufacturing that opportunity
The items are kind of crazy. There is a puzzle that requires you to assemble three items in a specific room, then discover a separate other room, then get to that room to use that item. There’s like 15+ items in the game, how are you ever supposed to organically put that together? Also finding a metal detector in my first 5 days made me paranoid that every room was hiding keys and coins on the floor even when I didn’t have it
Some of the puzzles are so obtuse and have so many layers that if you ever happen to solve one that you suddenly think all puzzles could be that crazy. I solved the chess puzzle before the periodic table puzzle and was building this wildly complicated solution to that puzzle when it was actually really simple
Despite my gripes I do think it’s a good game with incredible puzzles and a very unique design. I just think it doesn’t account for people actually playing it. I would bet there’s a really intriguing story under this but eventually I got so hung up on performing solutions I had already discovered I couldn’t be bothered to also discover the plot. I did read a summary after that helped contextualize things. Honestly what I’m looking forward to is when someone else takes these mechanics and refines it into a really cool rogue-like
spoilerI’m aware of the electromagnet. I think it’s ridiculous you need to find a compass, a battery, and a workshop in order to make it work. By the time you have all those are you really going to run around the house to hoover up items? If you want it on another run is that what you’re waste a coat check slot on? Also, it doesn’t collect gems or dice, which is stupid. That’s something you should just get permanently at a certain point
Hi people, I currently have two friends who injured their dominant arm in unrelated accidents and mostly can’t do anything but sit around and watch movies....
The Final Fantasy pixel remasters are all old school turn based RPGs that can be played one handed on the steam deck. Certainly not all 50 games but UFO 50 has a bunch of games made for a non-existent console that are all pretty simple and I would bet a lot of them can be played one handed. Both Crypt of the Necrodancer and Cadence of Hyrule are rhythm dungeon delver games that probably work one handed too, technically so would the new game Rift of the Necrodancer but that requires more skill than I have
Oh, and for the RPG fan Disco Elysium is almost certainly up his alley and perfect for one handed play
Looking for the new Baldur’s Gate 3 subclasses? Although patch 8 has a host of content to be excited about, arguably the most important is the 12 new subclasses. Below, we have a thorough breakdown of all 12 new subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3, their associated abilities, levels and more.
I’ll start by saying I had a bit of trouble wording the title but I’ll try to elaborate on it. I find it can be a bit daunting at times figuring out what a decent entry point is in a series of video games without searching online first. Sometimes there will be ten games released across three different generation of consoles...
Thus my quotes around “dead”. I’m well aware people still play it, it’s just an old design and if there are two Final Fantasy MMOs that someone could play, don’t you think almost everyone would suggest the one in active development, with a significantly larger playerbase, and the one that has had a much better critical reception? Seems obvious to me
I recently watched Flow and with enough care and effort a movie doesn’t need dialog to be impactful and well done. There is often a large gulf between what is possible and what they’re going to do but I’ll be interested to see where this goes
Looking for game recommendations for my 4 year old who just got a Switch for Christmas. He’s having a good time with Donut County, and likes running around the town in Stardew Valley, but looking for something else. Doesn’t have to be super kids-y, but easy, chill, no lose condition or time limits. Thoughts?
Club House Games is an easy recommendation. 51 games that are classics around the world. You probably know how to play the majority of them already. Likewise a Nintendo switch online subscription is the price of a game for a year and comes with N64, GBA, GBC, SNES, NES, and Dreamcast games. Pokémon stadium 1/2, Ecco the dolphin, Kirby super-star saga, Kirby dream course are all good
Yes but a big difference is Call of Duty is an M rated video game whereas Fortnite is rated T. Fortnite doesn’t feature blood, death, or swearing. Does it matter that the same kids probably play both? That’s for the parents to decide
Epic’s official language for the game never features death. Characters are eliminated, you can meet the god of the underworld, but no character ever actually dies. Apparently the ESRB says it’s ok
I imagine Epic cares less about what the ESRB thinks and more about what the CCP thinks, seeing as Tencent has a major stake in Epic. China is generally anti-death in games
At first I thought “yeah but you’re not polishing that off in a weekend” but that’s basically the equivalent of 2 fifths of booze which isn’t really a ton for a alcoholic or a hard partying college kid
I know I associate with a few degenerates, but some of my heavy drinking friends could absolutely pound 2 fifths in a weekend. They’d be goddammed miserable on Monday but honestly that’s par for the course. One of my buddies in college used to put away a case of beer over a weekend which is 30 beers, not much less than 2 fifths which is about 35 drinks
I suppose it depends on how one defines the weekend. If you start the weekend on Friday night then it’s way more reasonable, say 8-10 on Friday, 12 on Sat/Sun is an intense weekend in Vegas. But if you drink 1.5 drinks per hour for 12 hours on Saturday/Sunday that’s 36 drinks. Which I don’t think is crazy for either a hard partying college kid or an alcholic
Correct. 60% of the alcohol consumed in America is drunk by 10% of the population. Honestly most people fall into 1 of 2 categories: non/light drinkers, and heavy drinkers. For heavy drinkers this is not crazy and I don’t think a light drinker is purchasing 90% abv absinthe
A fifth used to be a fifth of a gallon. Stupidly as the world became more globalized bottle sizes followed and so the bottles we still call a fifth are actually 750ml. What’s worse is that the next unit up is a handle which is 1.75 liters! So it doesn’t even follow mathematically
The dev says this is one of three big announcements. One could possibly be a release date for the mobile version, but I’m not sure what the third could be.
For plasma specifically I’d focus on high additive chip jokers. While that’s normally bad advice, consider how crazy good a card with +50 mult on it would be. Now consider that a +100 chip joker is effectively a +50 chip/+50 mult (I know that’s not technically true but I’m illustrating a point). Also eventually you do hit a point of diminishing returns because plasma prevents you from having a super high multiplier or chips, so like every build, total score multipliers are the best
Generally some good advice is that Balatro is a math game first and foremost so you want to focus on things that raise your score the quickest. So adding chips is ok, adding multiplier is better, and multiplying your total is the best.
For example let’s say you are playing straights and you have a 10-6 with level 3 straights. So you’d have:
10+9+8+7+6=40
(40+90)x10=1300
So let’s compare how jokers impact that score:
Devious joker: +100 chips if you have a straight
(40+90+100)x10=2300
Crazy joker: +12 mult if you have a straight
(40+90)x(10+12)=2860
The order: x3 mult if you have a straight
(40+90)x(10x3)=3900
You can see those are very big differences! It’s also helpful to pay attention to the order of your cards. Generally Balatro cards are scored left to right. The most important thing is to take any card that multiplies any part of your score on the right so you can add as much to the score as possible, then you multiply that number
So in short: multiplier jokers are best, additive multiplier jokers are good, additive chip jokers are ok, and pay attention to the order of your jokers/played cards
It’s hard to offer strong heuristics for Balatro because you could theoretically build up to a point where you’ve got a crazy high multiplier but if your chips are low it doesn’t matter.
For example let’s say you’ve got a face card 4 of a kind build going with: Pareidolia, Zany, Smiley, Trio, and Family jokers. These give you (respectively) all cards are face cards, +12 mult for 3 of a kind, +20 mult for each hand (all cards are face cards), x3 mult, x4 mult for a total of 384 multiplier! On base 4 of a kind this is
60x([7+12+20]x3x4)=28,080
However if you were to drop smiley face (+5 mult per face) for scary face (+30 chips per face card) which by almost every heuristic is a bad decision your score becomes:
(60+120)x([7+12]x3x4)=41,040
Which is a way bigger score!
So while people can offer general advice like stack high chips on plasma, always go for total score multipliers, etc. sometimes you just have to evaluate your specific build and figure out the best play
Finally outside of decks like abandoned and checkered which are specifically made to get certain hands, there isn’t a “best” hand to go for. The highest possible scores I’ve seen all come from high card builds but most normal players won’t get those. I’ve won two of a kind runs, flush 5 runs, straight runs, flush runs. You just have to evaluate your deck and tarot cards to see your options
I prefer Sci-fi background noise so Surviving Mars is my favorite. Mass Effect is ok but I find it gets a little too cinematic and bombastic at times. FTL and Into The Breach, or really anything by Ben Prunty is good too
I would like to remind people that this is corpo speak. This is likely counting mobile shovelware monopoly, my little pony, trivial pursuit, clue, etc stuff. Plus there’s Transformers and we don’t know if they count only their own games or do they count something like the Fortnite crossover as a video game project? Hell I can name 4 active magic the gathering video games off the top of my head. It’s entirely possible they count certain magic expansions as their own thing if they’re complex enough (MH3, Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy)
My point is that this doesn’t say anything of substance, don’t read it as a reaction to anything in particular
It’s kind of dumb but honestly fun as hell if you can find a working peripheral: DJ Hero honestly still rips. The music rocks and you can change the music on the fly
On a more accessible side Hades does a good job increasing in intensity as things get more chaotic
Yeah, it’s available on basically every video game platform. This will likely be the only way to play it on mobile though. It’s an amazing game. I’d highly recommend it
