Talaraine, (edited ) do gaming w Mechwarrior 5: Clans. It's wonderful. But I've hit a snag.

Hahah that's the EXACT mission I'm stuck on right now. Been watching videos and reviews that rave about the game but nobody talks about it.

For future searchers, the mission is called Disciplinary Action

RangerJosie,
@RangerJosie@lemmy.world avatar

Reviewers never made it that far.

Talaraine,

Found a couple references on Reddit this morning. Some are suggesting that you take a heavily modified TimberWolf just because the captured mechs are so fast, and to use different strats with your Star as a firing line just to take on the rest while you leg the targets.

I wasn't keen on modifiying the mechs as I'm not fond of the mech bay, but I guess if I wanna progress I'm gonna have to roll up my sleeves.

And apparently Executioners aren't the best mech in this sitch. Too many fights, too little ammo.

For myself I made it to the final battle a couple times, but just got wrecked in it. See if you can park your firing line in the water in various places, maybe mod them for ER large lasers and take advantage of the cooling.

RangerJosie,
@RangerJosie@lemmy.world avatar
Talaraine,

Let me know how you do!

RangerJosie,
@RangerJosie@lemmy.world avatar

I won. Somehow.

Played it real conservative. Held back. Used choke points. Positioned my star in water so they could go nuts without overheating.

Tried the same thing at the next cliff after the choice. Didn’t work out.

Talaraine,

Outstanding. My turn xD. Wish me luck.

Talaraine,

Success!

RangerJosie,
@RangerJosie@lemmy.world avatar

Congrats.

If I might offer some advise for what’s coming. Keep the play style that let you beat Disciplinary Action going. It’s gonna serve you well in missions to come.

And hit the Sim Pod for mech xp and to level up your star. Cuz you’re gonna need every edge you can get.

silverchase, (edited ) do games w Are there any apps or sites that collate all the patch notes for games?
@silverchase@sh.itjust.works avatar

If patch notes are announced in an official blog, it’s likely that it has an RSS or Atom feed. You can subscribe to the blog from an RSS reader and it’ll appear in the feed.

And if you haven’t heard of RSS readers before, welcome to the world of being able to subscribe to almost any website you want! The news and webcomics come to you, not the other way around.

Update: an example.

I open my reader (Inoreader), select “Add feed”, and enter https://www.teamfortress.com/. It detects the TF2 official blog and I select “Follow” to add it to my feeds. Now, when TF2 updates and patch notes are posted, I can refresh my reader to see the latest patch notes.

rockerface,

Do you use an RSS reader on mobile as well, by any chance? If so, which would you recommend for Android?

silverchase,
@silverchase@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve been out of the RSS metagame for a long while, so I don’t have any particular recommendation. I’ve just been using Inoreader on mobile as well for the past several years since it works for my purposes. There very well could be better choices out there but there’s no urgency for me to switch.

Dark_Arc,
@Dark_Arc@social.packetloss.gg avatar

I’m happy to say, IMO, you’re still using the meta RSS client haha

rustyricotta,

I haven’t gotten around to using it yet, but I’ve seen a lot of people recommend Feeder

I use Inoreader on both desktop and mobile (they have a very feature rich app, synchronize your experience up, and have a generous free plan).

SepulchravesLibrary, do gaming w What game do you wish you got into as a kid?

Definitely the Silent Hill series for me. We were more of a Resident Evil household growing-up

Chozo,
@Chozo@fedia.io avatar

From what I've seen, the SH2 remake looks really good. Honestly, it's a fine starting point if you want to get into the series as SH1 is pretty inconsequential to the rest of the games, so you can definitely just skip it and not really miss out on much.

I really hope that Bloober gets the greenlight to continue remaking the rest of the series. I'd love to see a modernized SH3.

petrol_sniff_king,

SH2 remake is sooo good. I’m in disbelief, honestly—and I’m still not convinced Konami will take Silent Hill f seriously enough. God willing.

But yes, if you’re interested, play SH2 remake.

SepulchravesLibrary,

Thanks for your replies! I’ve started playing SH2 remake just today and I’m thoroughly enjoying it thus far. Bloober Team really surprised me with this one.

The following are incoherent rambles pls don’t bother to read/don’t be mad

I’m finding this hard to articulate without rambling but despite enjoying it, I’m not feeling truly immersed in the moment-to-moment gameplay as much as I’d like to be. The reason being this is my first exposure to SH2 and I personally feel like I’m trying to retroactively “catch-up” on almost 20 years of missed themes and nostalgia, therefore I’m trying to absorb & consider every element of the story a li’l too much.

Phenomonal sound design btw.

I want to smash every window in the town

petrol_sniff_king,

Yeah, that’s a tough one.

I’d say “well, don’t,” but that’s pretty obviously useless. :p

I think I can say this much, though: Silent Hill, being so metaphorical, it’s kind of built like a big puzzle? It’s okay to “not get it” while you’re playing. Most of the stuff I know I’m pretty sure I picked up from fan wikis later on.

So, easier said than done, but: try not to think so much, haha.

The remake is also a little better about explaining its own plot, I think just by being a little more obvious. So, by the end, some things might click into place a little more.

And yeah, the sound design, (minor early game spoiler) have you noticed that >!the radio!< >!is a positional sound?!<

!Normally, you hear it kind of left and behind you. My instinct that the sound is supposed to be telling me where to look was so strong that I kept turning away from enemies I knew were right in front of me. That’s so genius I almost feel it must have been an accident.!<

SepulchravesLibrary,

You live up to your name, thank you King! I’m going to try to put that critical part of my brain away, just enjoy the ride and worry about having a deeper delve & thinking about the themes after my first run-through.

I’ve recently upgraded TV and sound systems and that li’l detail about the radio is genuinely so helpful.

petrol_sniff_king,

Oh hell yeah. The perfect system for Yamaoka’s industrial scrape music.

Let me know how it goes. I’ve been real excited to see people experience this for the first time, haha.

Metaphor! I’m at the third town and loving every part of it.

I’m kinda struggling with the difficulty on hard, so I might turn it down a bit, as the resources feel a little too strict and stressful, but it makes finishing a dungeon more satisfying.

been playing Callisto Protocol since i got it free from the Epic Store a little while back. I’m really enjoying it.

ConstableJelly,

So close to great. I wish more developers were making environmentally detailed, high production value, single player linear games like Callisto Protocol. Just that little bit better executed to round out the total package.

Paradachshund, do gaming w Favourite puzzle platformers?

If you want to double down on the puzzle aspect, check out Toki Tori 2. It’s a metroidvania side scrolling puzzle game. The wild part of it is you basically only have 2 moves, but you have to figure out how to use those moves to solve puzzles in the environment to progress. There are no actual hard walls like in a regular metroidvania, it’s just your understanding of how you can manipulate and influence objects in the world that gates you from getting to new places.

Kolanaki, do gaming w Can anyone help me identify this Xbox controller?
!deleted6508 avatar

The “you died” text on it makes me wonder if it was some kind of special Dark Souls thing. But I don’t remember any special Dark Souls release on Xbox.

It could have been custom made back when they were doing that if you bought directly from MS. Not sure if they still do that, but I rememeber it being a thing back in, I think, the XB360 days.

theskyisfalling,

Yeh it was the text that was throwing me. I’ve customised my own controllers with different coloured buttons etc before so that part was easily explainable but the text is professionally added and I never knew that was a thing people did (seems like a waste of money to me)

Turns out it is a design labs custom one as per the other responses though. Learn something new every day!

All of these mods were (are?) available to people willing to fork over extra cash to have their own controllers made via Xbox Design Lab.

theskyisfalling,

Cheers man for the reply. Yeh it seems like this is the case I just didn’t know that it was a thing.

I’ve bought coloured buttons and modded my own controllers before but it was the text on the bottom that was throwing me as it has been professionally added! I didn’t know that design lab was a thing :)

Hydra_Fk, do gaming w Can anyone help me identify this Xbox controller?

Did the game dark souls have a combo release?

theskyisfalling,

Not that I knew of and apparently it is a custom made one as per the other responses. Til
