Donjuanme, do games w What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?

My previous comment seemed to miss the point of this thread.

In the spirit of this thread I would love to find an alternative to “Settlers 7, a new kingdom”. The simplified combat, the urgency of the tech tree, the all or nothing of trade routes, and the really deep 4x in an RTS elements were friggin amazing, but Ubisoft drm really kept me away from trying any other entries to the series, and they haven’t indicated anything new coming out. So where can I guy go to get his settlers fix? If you haven’t played settlers 7, and are ignorant of why ubisoft is synonymous with the devil, give it a shot, it’s a wonderfully fun experience that I haven’t found replicated anywhere else.

Do you have steam? Click on a tag (preferably a more descriptive one, but multiple can be selected on the next screen) of a game you enjoy, but think the soul has been lost from, sort by user review, find something you haven’t heard of before, enjoy the next entry in your preferred genre!

Alternatively go to the games store screen, at the bottom, after “more from this developer” is “users who enjoyed this game also enjoy”

Steam makes it very easy to expand your library, like it’s their business or something.

Edit to add Missing the point of let’s get some community involvement in here rather than turning to our benevolent monopolistic overlords.

Mooching off OP’s post to say: bonus points if the game is 2 player couch co-op 😊

arudesalad,

Dont starve together is a good one like another commenter said, I don’t know if it’s couch co-op but when you buy it on steam, you get a free second copy to give to your friend you’re playing with (at least when I bought it)

The original FFVII game! Figuring out how to get the multiple discs to work from an emulator was a bit of a pain, but afterwards it’s been easy sailing! While it certainly has its problems, I can see why it’s so popular. Planning on checking out the remakes later on to get more of it, but I can’t deny I’ll miss the low-poly graphics of the OG, as I’ve always had a soft spot for that kind of 3D art

Diablo 4 - I feel like I talk about this game every week, but I've been playing it every week, so... working on Season 2. Doing pretty good, already on Slayer chapter, and I'm happy to see a change up in the season journey objectives from last season. Feeling apprehensive but optimistic about completing all them this round, except for the PvP objective. There's like nobody in the PvP areas every time I'm there.
Diablo 3 - season 29. Trying to improve my wizard for Greater Rifts. It's going... meh. I feel like I've hit a plateau in progressing, even though I'm still leveling up like crazy.
Mad Max - I hadn't finished a previous playthrough of this game and was kind of having a shitty week, so I've been revisiting this favorite of mine. Ended up finishing the story while chatting with a friend, so now I'm just driving around in the Interceptor finishing up side quests and taking down camps.

sylverstream,

I’ve recently bought Mad Max, so it’s pretty good? Will start it soon!

CharlesReed,

Definitely underrated in my opinion, and it still holds up graphically today.

Against the Storm! It’s a roguelite citybuilder set in an apocalyptic world where you build settlements in a short amount of time to complete objectives and hopefully survive. While it borrows some mechanics from some city builders, I haven’t played anything quite like it’s unique blend yet. Plus the artstyle is pretty reminiscent of Warcraft but prettier.

It’s in early access right now but it’s basically a complete game at this point.

Modded minecraft, civ (but that might not be the type of game your looking for) and maybe factorio

Adalast,

It is really hard to shoehorn Factorio into a survival genre.

arudesalad,

I did miss the survival part

Minnels,

Gotta survive the biters!

ouch,

The survival part is surviving the game without ruining your life.

Adalast,

Hahaha, that is great! I failed on that one.

I just finished Atelier Totori. Third game in the series I’ve tried, second I’ve finished (after Rorona). I mostly nibbled at this one (did much the same with Rorona, especially early on) but I liked the story and characters a lot more here. I laughed, I cried. The progression system was much more interesting, too. Even with all that, the UI/UX is just plain brutal. I really hope the next game I play in the series is better about this. I’m also quite surprised that I did almost everything with months to spare, considering everything I heard about how strict the time limit is in Totori.

A friend and also just finished our Baldur’s Gate 3 multiplayer campaign (her first run, I had a lot of hours in it before she started). Amazingly I still don’t think I’ve fully gotten the game out of my system yet.

WarioWare: Move It! comes out in a few days and I’ll likely be picking that up right away. Other than that, I’m not sure. Maybe I’ll finally pick up Phantom Liberty.

I’m prepping for my next BG3 playthrough by playing through divinity original sin 1 and probably 2 after. I’ve never played either and I’m really enjoying the challenge so far. I’ve really been into that genre since BG launched, we will see how long it lasts!

ThatWeirdGuy1001, do games w Would you prefer if games had a separate difficulty setting for boss fights?
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

I prefer games that use reactionary difficult (idk what the proper term is) where the difficulty changes based on how well you do.

Kicking too much ass? Here’s more enemies and they hit harder.

Getting gangbanged at every turn? Fewer enemies and they’re easier to kill.

This seems like the best way to make sure everyone playing has a fun experience

rivalary,

I’m the complete opposite. I don’t want to feel like the game is letting me win. I want to earn it, at least a little.

avatar,

I don’t know if I want to be punished for doing well

simple,

I hate that. Nothing is more enraging than dying and having the loading screen say something like “hey, it looks like you suck, do you want to go back to normal difficulty?” No, no I don’t. Difficulty is part of the enjoyment fot me, having a feature that takes it out of my control would be a turnoff.

Let’s add this to the list of shitty anti-consumer choices that big tech corporations have implemented this year.

IIRC Microsoft still hasn’t reverted on their asinine choice of locking their console players into their overpriced branded SSDs.

Why9,

I don’t think it’s as black and white as that. Not to say that Microsoft isn’t dubious at times, but it seems they’re trying to weed out dodgy devices here.

Give companies free reign to create third party devices and they’ll create things that can be considered borderline cheat-y, or create things that are so bad that they affect people’s experience of Xbox consoles.

All this error code seems to be doing is requiring third party hardware to go through proper checks to verify hardware.

Aielman15,
@Aielman15@lemmy.world avatar

All this error code seems to be doing is requiring third party hardware to go through proper checks to verify hardware.

Translated: They want third parties to pay for the “Xbox seal of approval”.

Why9,

I mean I get it, it sucks for third party developers to pay a fee to develop for Xbox

But if you look at the quality of third party hardware available on PlayStation, Apple etc, it’s usually at a much higher quality and that gives people a perception that the hardware is better overall, even though Xbox series X and the PS5 are direct competitors.

If Xbox controllers cost $70 and crappy Chinese knockoffs are retailing for $20 and have no quality control, have cheat-y turbo buttons and break easily, they’re losing money that would have done to official controllers and also losing their brand image.

They’re not outright saying that third party devices are no longer allowed, but it does seem they want to manage the quality a little more

echo64,

You’re looking at this from a “what is good for microsoft” position. You won’t find much purchase for that thought process here. People care more about what is good for consumers and real people over companies.

Why9,

Absolutely! Who wouldn’t want to look at it purely from a consumer’s point of view?

It’s easy to just look at it from the consumer’s POV but the best plan is to check Microsoft when it’s actually being scummy, and not when it’s trying to just keep in line with every other company.

Sony issued takedowns of companies trying to sell PS5 faceplates, because they wanted to sell theirs at a premium. Apple is insanely notorious for proprietary hardware, to the point where the latest iPhone 15 even has its back glass fitted with a ribbon wire, so your iPhone won’t even start unless you’re using an iPhone certified back glass and it’s fitted by an iPhone tech that can enable the flag that lets your back glass work.

In a world like that, it makes no sense for Microsoft to put up with cheap knockoffs of its products especially if those products suck and are ruining its brand image.

Capitalism sucks but it is what it is. What we should do as consumers is vote with our money and not buy any accessories like this until these companies allow more third party developers to sell their parts. It just doesn’t work that way though. People keep buying this stuff no matter how high the prices go

echo64,

You’ve now taken the stance that these other companies did scummy things so it’s okay for Microsoft to do scummy anti consumer things. This will also not find purchase.

Why9,

Dude, my personal stance is irrelevant here.

I’m not saying that that’s my stance. I’m saying Microsoft is one of the largest companies in the world. You’re not going to change their mind by saying “I don’t like it”.

All I’m saying is “this is how businesses work”. If we don’t like it, we need to protest, vote with our wallets.

If you must know, my personal stance is the same as everyone else’s: it sucks that they’re forcing us to pay for first party/verified third party hardware which usually comes with a price rise.

But I thought I’d inform people what Microsoft’s position is in all this. They’re not going to stop taking massive losses just because some people on Lemmy said “that’s not nice”. Reality is that every company wants to make a profit and retain a positive brand image, especially now that Microsoft spent 69 billion dollars on Activision -Blizzard.

echo64,

Yes yes we all know that big companies are going to do bad things, you aren’t revealing new information here. And we know that leaving a comment on lemmy isn’t going to change anything, this is not new information.

We don’t really like this whole “big companies do bad things and we should expect that and not say anything about it” thing. should we just never talk about anything because big companies are big, so do what they want.

Why9,

Yes yes we all know that big companies are going to do bad things, you aren’t revealing new information here.

You’re finding it extremely hard to understand the concepts of this conversation and still have the gall to be sarcastic and patronising. It’s surprising when you’re clearly misinformed.

We don’t really like this whole “big companies do bad things and we should expect that and not say anything about it” thing. should we just never talk about anything because big companies are big, so do what they want.

No one’s said you can’t talk about it? How are you so confused? I’ll break it down for you since you’re obviously struggling:

Companies sell products. Companies like Sony have a tighter control on their third party hardware. Companies like Microsoft are much more lenient, but it causes cheap knockoffs to flood the market and reduce their brand value and first-party profits. Microsoft will now implement a check to control third party hardware. People on Lemmy get upset. It’s hypocrisy.

You’re either upset with the whole system or none of it. Getting upset the moment Microsoft does it makes no sense. At no point is anyone saying that you can’t talk about it.

echo64,

do you really think people are just upset now? and aren’t upset when other companies do bad things?

Waluigis_Talking_Buttplug,

Wait, you can’t buy regular drives anymore? That’s actually kind of fucked

Omegamanthethird,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

You can, but you can’t play Series games on it. Only previous generation games. Same as on PS5.

echo64,

on PS5 you can buy any brand SSD drive and it will work. only microsoft locks the system to use authorized hardware

Omegamanthethird, (edited )
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, I took “regular” to mean external drives, not non-proprietary internal drives. Last gen you could use an external HDD to expand your storage without any issues. This gen you can still do it, but its use is limited.

Omegamanthethird,
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

Their SSD prices dropped significantly this past year when they allowed another company to start making them. But it’s still nowhere near as cheap as PS5’s SSD expansion which isn’t proprietary at all.

pHr34kY,

I threw a 1TB aftermarket SSD in my XBox One S and there was absolutely no attempt to stop me.

As with every time I leave it alone for a while and come back, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is like a completely different game. I booted up the latest experimental and started a new mall start character, something I do every time to get into the groove of things. Suddenly zombies are all powerful grapplers, frenzied humans listening for gunshots prowl the halls, and dodging/blocking/stunning are all a lot less reliable.

Im scared again! And a little frustrated lol

Haatveit,

I know it won’t happen, but I keep imagining CDDA getting the “Steam” treatment ala Dwarf Fortress. Both games are amazing… Should play CDDA again myself. Always such a pain to remember HOW to play though, and by the time my muscle memory gets good enough that I can actually fluidly play the game instead of staring at keybinds, I’ve kinda run out of gas 😄

Amazing game, and I say that as someone who generally doesn’t care for that style of game. It does take a little to get it’s feet, but when it gets it’s hooks in, it doesn’t let go. Give it a shot!

So what are you playing this week?
