Marketing games in 2023: "We're very excited to announce that we have an announcement to make next month!"

More seriously, not the biggest GTA fan, but I hope it lives up to expectations. People have been waiting a decade at this point. Also looking forward to seeing how many times Rockstar will be able to re-release GTA 6 over the next decade.

Damage, do gaming w Official: New Grand Theft Auto Trailer Arriving in December

Who cares at this point

Especially as a PC player

gk99,

Oh boy a slow moving camera panning over some NPCs to show the scenery and some cutscene shots of a game launching a year from now, two years if on PC.

I’m Rockstar disillusioned, that’s the problem with waiting over a decade to put out a sequel, I went from 15 to 25.

upstream,

You should have been older in the glory days.

GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas - in rapid succession.

Followed by GTA IV

Followed by Red Dead Redemption (which I only played after RDR2, because I assumed they’d make a PC-port)

Followed by GTA V

2001, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2013

Then it took until 2018 to get RDR2, and at best we’re seeing GTA VI in 2024.

And let us not forget that we had GTA and GTA2 back in the 90’s. 1997 and 1999.

Up to 87 hours warts and all. Have played through some great quests. Also found plenty of bugs and annoyances, but overall it’s great. The random procedural quests are a nice addition, a call back to Daggerfall. The space combat is an ok addition. Bases are the big waste of time here, but you don’t really need to do one. There are lots of nice shoutouts to your character after doing certains quests, including NG+. (Few things that don’t make sense, and they could’ve pushed it farther -

spoilerlike does it makes sense to join the Crimson Fleet in the Razorleaf, better to have cut out that questline for that play thru IMO

) Overall quite satisifed and i’m enjoying it a lot. I can see getting to 100 hours easily without mods.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

After 80 hours, I encountered a clear bug.

None of the security guards had armor, just walking around shirtless.

Loved it.

TGames, do gaming w Unity Apologizes For Runtime Fee Policy, Promises To Alter Plan This Week

Unity was sold on no revenue share, just paying for your dev seats. That they not only tried to weasle out of this by inventing an “runtime fee” but also applied it to already complete games is a fundermental break in trust. There’s no ammout of walking it back that can fix that unless they’re going to fire anyone who thought this was a good idea. Which of course they’re not going to do meaning things like this remain in the table.

Goronmon, do games w The first trailer for #ELDENRING Shadow of the Erdtree will be revealed in 16 hours. Join us at 15:00 UTC.

To echo what have seen other say, I’m excited about this DLC in theory because I really enjoyed Elden Ring on my first play through and some quick NG+ runs for endings. I actually got all the achievements, which is rare for me.

But after all that, I’ve struggled to play since. I’ll play for a few hours on a character, then take weeks or months before I want to play again. And I’m worried I’ll have the same reaction with the DLC.

There is so much open space in the game that it somehow is overwhelming once you have a rough idea that most of the content isn’t that important, but some of it is crucial to specific builds you may want to run. It’s almost like you spend most of your effort avoiding content because of how time-consuming just playing the game “normally” can be.

rockerface,

It’s almost like you’re allowed to not replay single player games after you’ve done what you wanted in the game

Goronmon,

My point was that I’m worried I’ll feel the same when I try to play the DLC.

Even worse, judging by past FromSoftware games, the DLC isn’t something you do right at the beginning or right towards the end of the game. So, it will likely require a decent amount of playtime to reach the content.

Nudding,

If you’re so worried, then don’t risk it.

rockerface,

Weren’t your feelings positive, though? You did a full playthrough, and you got all achievements - especially considering that’s not something you do usually. I’ve basically done the same, but I don’t consider it a bad thing to not be as interested in the game I’ve already played. And you can use one of your existing saves to do the DLC, considering it will probably be more difficult than the base game, so having a fully geared up build will help

I loved my playthrough of Elden Ring - and I’m happy I got to play it at launch and participate in the zeitgeist and discovery of it at the point where the wikis weren’t even populated etc - but I’m not super keen to play the DLC. Finishing the game was definitely a little more of a relief that it was over than I would have hoped to feel. It didn’t help that the last boss is terrible, so the game kind of ends on a sour note.

Also, FromSoft DLCs are always much harder than the base game. I already didn’t enjoy what they did with Malenia, if they try to top her in the DLC I honestly just can’t see myself having any fun.

EDIT: spelling

Bdtrngl,

As someone currently slogging through dark souls 2, that second paragraph is giving me PTSD.

TheChurn,

The Dark Souls 2 DLCs are some of the best content in all of Souls. While the original game has some level design issues, the DLCs are sublime.

I only buy from gog on the side too since the no drm policy is very pro consumer. And also the porn games are unrated via a free dlc instead of having to download it externally.

Free dlc you say… interesting

I dreamt once that there was a reliable, non-profit yet well funded community that hosted and distributed games with minimal take in an effort to spread gaming as art and history. They even kept a system agnostic achievement system that retroactively added steam, PlayStation and Xbox achievements in one place with community features.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this. I have weird dreams, y’all!

brsrklf, do games w Innersloth (Among Us devs) post statement about new unity changes

Out of the loop. What’s the change?

From context it seems Unity is asking for a new fee per installed game, instead of using what the studio actually earned from the game?

If so, yeah, I get how it would be terrible if your game got a sudden huge install base from gamepass or such.

mordack550,

It will ask a small fee for every install, on top of the royalties. The issue seems that for small studios this fee is not feasible, and it seems that also pirated games and demos would count

Whirlybird,

It’s only once they’ve taken in like $200k in revenue btw. Demos don’t count, neither do game pass subscriptions or games bought via humble bundle etc.

Chozo,

They specified that demos MAY count. There's stipulations to that.

Whirlybird,

Only if the demo is the full game file.

Indicah,

$200k in revenue is pennies to a game developer of any size.

SulaymanF, (edited )

Also, trolls could delete and reinstall the app repeatedly, forcing the developer on the hook for large amounts of money to Epic games.

Whirlybird,

This has been confirmed not true. It’s on a machine level. You can install 10000 times on the same machine and it will only charge for 1 install.

Cqrd, (edited )

It was actually true that multiple installs per user would count multiple times, but Unity rolled back that decision not long after announcing it. However, install bombs will still be possible, I seriously doubt Unity has a fool proof way to accurately identify the same user over multiple installs if the user is reinstalling maliciously to cost the developer money.

flumph,
@flumph@programming.dev avatar

And? It would take a trivial amount of effort to spin up VMs and install the game on each. If I immediately tear the VM down after, I’m sure my cost would be covered by free AWS credits.

Whirlybird,

Why would anyone do this? Most games also don’t give you an unlimited amount of installs.

sugar_in_your_tea, (edited )

Trolls. Competitors. Vigilantes. This is the Internet.

flumph,
@flumph@programming.dev avatar

What? I’ve never played a game that limited the number of times I could install it.

Whirlybird,

On the number of machines you can install it on. Windows store games do this.

MurrayL,

Epic has nothing to do with Unity

Cheers,

But also, what entitles them to even a portion of the games proceeds? Adobe doesn’t get a cut for every digital piece you create. Dundermifflin doesn’t get a cut everytime you write a new contract. That’s absolute bullshit and they should get a fine for even thinking they’re allowed to be this big and change the rules like this. That’s a monopoly mindset.

brsrklf,

I guess it really depends how it’s done. I don’t think an actual cut of the proceeds is fair either, but stuff like having a low entry point and scaling your tool’s cost a bit according to the project success can be a good idea.

That said after they’d try to pull a stunt like they did I definitely wouldn’t trust them anymore.
