Glowstick, (edited ) do astronomy w Northern lights predicted in US and UK on Monday night in wake of solar storms

Anyone got a map? Saying “as far south as the midwest” is a pretty useless descriptor of where this might be seen

EDIT

map

swpc.noaa.gov/…/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomor…

Krrygon,

Thanks for posting the map! Looks like here in central washington, I am out of luck haha. Better luck next time, I s’pose!

Glowstick,

The red line is the “view line” so you might see a glimpse way off on the horizon

stoy,

I have the Aurora Pro app on my iPhone, it sends me alerts when the forecast predicts northern lights in my area (around stockholm)

cmbabul, do games w Is Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 just another ‘lazy’ addition to the franchise?

It’s crazy to me that COD is still doing the exact same thing they’ve been doing since I stopped enjoying them ten years ago.

Screen_Shatter,

It seems lazy to take this long to call them lazy. I think I dropped off around MW3 maybe? Just remember feeling like too much of a rehash back then.

Tall_Chilchuck,

BLOPS 2 had good gameplay, iirc. I kept on that game for a few years instead of getting any of the later installments.

chloyster, do gaming w The disturbing online misogyny of Gamergate has returned – if it ever went away

So that was a thread huh?

Sorry to have to lock the post and clean up some comments, but I think it’s safe to say that gamergater apologia is not cool on the gaming community here.

Please do not downplay death threats, especially when they come from a site absolutely known for sending them out. Think what you want about SBI, but to deny Gamergate and other harassment campaigns and the damage they have caused is dangerous and also absolutely does not contribute to making beehaw a safe place.

Thanks ❤️

Edit: and thank you to everyone who reported!

while i think "old bad new good" is an overly simplistic way to look at things, i do appreciate this fire in SEGA's eyes again. i hope they can find a way forward to expand their horizons creatively without alienating their existing players

stardust, do games w Chinese video games are on the rise, but I wish they got more respect

If they want respect it’s going to have to be through quality Sony or Nintendo type single player titles that don’t have a gacha model that gets critical acclaim. Their own Breath of the Wild or Last of Us type game that holds up critically as opposed to being a game where “gacha mechanics can be ignored” in a best case scanerio.

But, most of the games that are well known games embody the perfect spirit of capitalism meant to try and squeeze as much money out of its users over years. Mobile gamers may give it a pass with how they don’t bat an eye to how predatory mobile games are, but the gamers that the writer is asking respect from are less likely to give those practices a pass.

    @alternative_factor@kbin.social avatar

There are a few great Chinese single player games out there like amazing cultivation simulator, but they are all indie games. The Chinese government restricted how Steam works in China so I have no idea how indie Chinese games are getting out there, if at all.
    https://www.pcgamer.com/steam-china-launch/
I played a little Genshin after it first released but was put off by the underage characters being portrayed sexually. The sad fact of the matter is that its a great game made with passion, and many Chinese games have a """lolicon""" issue. I tried the game Mahjong soul after getting into Mahjong from Final Fantasy, and it has the same issue.
And when I say """lolicon"", I mean kids as young as 11-13, maybe even younger. it's disgusting. Otakus seems to run the industry there as far as I can tell, or at least what makes it to the west because to know real stuff about Chinese culture you have to be at least kinda a weeb for Chinese stuff. I got into Xianxia from my love of manga which lead to Manhua. The Xianxia scene has a lot of problems but """lolicon""" hasn't been one of them.
TL;DR The chinese video game industry is run by otakus, at least for whats made it into the west. The worst part is that HoYoVerse WAS an indie developer whose motto was "by otakus, for otakus" they aren't hiding what they are about, but unfortunately have become #1 for pandering to the lowest possible denominator

acosmichippo, (edited ) do games w Four wheels good, two wheels bad: why are there no exciting cycling games?
    @acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

look i’m not a ICE apologist or antyhing (these apply to EVs as well) but it’s not hard to figure out why car games are more popular. Also I’m not saying these are universal rules, i’m sure some disagree. But I think it’s safe to say these apply to most in the gamer market.

    1. more power and speed = more fun.
    2. Games are as close as most people will come to driving an expensive car like a BMW, let alone a Ferrari, or even actual racing cars.
    3. Even if you argue people are just not culturally conditioned to aesthetically enjoy bicycles, could you even really appreciate them in the same way in a video game? you’d barely see them.
    4. Cars are much more complex machines and that leads to each having a more unique character than bicycles, and that allows a greater variety of gameplay. For example, mid/front engine, ICE/EV, NA/turbo/super, FWD/RWD/AWD, etc. And usually in games there’s a progression from lower performance cars to higher performance cars.
    Drewmeister,

Instead of leveling up your vehicle, you level up the infrastructure as you progress the game. By the end, you’re just taking the public transit system to the finish line.

    redhorsejacket,

There’s the kernel of a pretty good 3 minute YouTube skit in here.

    Katana314,

Doesn’t this touch on the premise of Death Stranding?

    horse,
    @horse@feddit.org avatar

I don’t know, bikes are incredibly diverse vehicles too. A tricycle is nothing like a cargo bike, a full suspension mountain bike, a road bike, a time trial bike, a BMX, a fixed gear etc. and they all feel very different to ride.

And while there might not be as many moving parts as on a car, a lot of engineering goes into the design of high end bicycles. If you’re into bikes, it’s very easy to appreciate the beauty and functional design of a well designed bicycle.

The fact that they are at their core simple machines which basic function hasn’t changed since the invention of the safety bicycle in the 1880s, yet have been innovated on ever since to arrive at the bikes we have today is what makes them fascinating imo.

Some people enjoy cars and some people enjoy bikes, but there isn’t really anything that makes one more inherently interesting.

I mean, I played it when it came out, and it was fun and all

    CosmoNova,

I haven‘t played it but it‘s arguably the least discussed Metal Gear Solid game. At least people talk about 4 and 5. 3 literally just sits in the middle and sort of… exists.

    TheThrillOfTime,

Idk what you’re talking about. It’s generally thought of as the best game in the series.

    DragonTypeWyvern,

Best mini games in the series, and I’ll fight about it

    CosmoNova,

That could be a reason to not discuss the game, though. It‘s probably not as rough or memeable.

I’ll blame the former guy all day long for his failings, but the Staggers Act deregulated the railroad industry in 1980, and was signed by Jimmy Carter. This mess has been a long time coming.

[false claims that] journalists gave the recent PS5 game Stellar Blade (pictured below) bad reviews because its female characters are too hot

That seems an inadequate way of summing up the Stellar Blade controversy which on the whole was considerably more ridiculous than that.

    Silverseren,

The Gamergaters really wanted the game to get bad reviews so they could use it to fuel their self-victimhood.

evasive_chimpanzee, do astronomy w Nasa Peregrine 1 has ‘no chance’ of landing on moon due to fuel leak

Peregrine 1 is not NASA’s. NASA paid for some payloads on the lander, but the lander itself is from Astrobiotic. It’s an important distinction because it seems like people are trying to blame NASA for whatever went wrong.
