Never forget how it started. In the beginning, steam was as hated as uplay, origin and epic combined

    Probably because Black Flag is fucking revered and people would eat that shit up on the pedigree alone. It's an open world pirate game, which doesn't have much competition.

    AC3 stands to gain more from a remake, but it would require some good faith from the community to buy into it, and it's not as unique of an overall experience from the initial premise compared to Black Flag which instantly forms a picture in your mind of a free booting high seas adventure with some light assassination.

    Delusional, (edited )

    I’d kill for that game but more centered around pirating. Maybe have your own fleet with more ship customization and be able to take over and build a city on an island that becomes thriving over time and then have to defend from attacks by the British navy or something.

    Kichae, do games w Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag can’t be bought on Steam due to a “technical issue”, not an incoming remake, Ubisoft insists

    Well, you see, the technical issue that's stopping them from selling it is called "canibalization of sales", which is technically an issue for their marketing department.

    Katana314, do games w Google, Netflix, Apple and Amazon are the "barbarians at the gate" of the games industry, says ex-Sony boss

    The only way they can actually disrupt gaming is by putting out something people want. Once upon a time, Microsoft and Sony seemed like “Bizarrely unfamiliar foreign invaders of gaming” but slowly settled into understanding what their customers wanted.

    As the article points out, tone-deaf or imperfect offerings have really bounced off. Heck, this is an age where many of Sony and Microsoft’s signature ventures have failed.

    dangblingus,

    Gamers don’t know what they want half the time. On one hand, posts like these seem to elicit the idea that gamers are united against predatory, bad publisher fuckery. But we aren’t. Activision Blizzard still make the most money in the entire industry shitting out garbage. People line up in droves to play the latest Assassins Creed. And mobile games have never been more popular. Many people play games simply because it’s in front of their face, not because they understand the nuances of game design or have any investment in the industry itself.

    steakmeout,

    No they don’t. Apple far and away makes the most money in gaming - by an order of magnitude.

    Bernie_Sandals,
    @Bernie_Sandals@lemmy.world avatar

    That’s simply not true.

    Apple made 18 billion dollars off gaming in 2021

    Yet Sony made over 20 billion dollars from gaming

    And Microsoft isn’t too far behind either of them. Apple makes a lot of money for sure, but it’s not the most, and it’s definitely not orders of magnitude more.

    deus, do games w Google, Netflix, Apple and Amazon are the "barbarians at the gate" of the games industry, says ex-Sony boss

    Amazon are also rumoured to be working on a Steam competitor, called “Vapor”

    Oh great, yet another launcher.

    slumberlust,

    Don’t worry, they havent made a game worth playing yet.

    Neato,
    @Neato@kbin.social avatar

    I'm not worried. They literally titled it "Vaporware". If that doesn't show how insanely out of touch they are then nothing will.

    Dozens of companies have tried to make storefronts and launchers to claw back some market share but none have come close to feature parity with Steam.

    Nipah,
    @Nipah@kbin.social avatar

    The main problem is that its not enough to be competitive with Steam at this point... you need to put out something so good that it give people enough of a reason to leave the comfort of Steam... you need Steam and then another layer of goodness on top of Steam.

    This is the same issue that a lot of MMOs had when trying to become a WoW killer. You not only needed to have pretty much everything Blizzard put into the game, but more on top because otherwise why would anyone bother to leave the comforts of Azeroth to play something that is maybe marginally better, or a possibly worse experience?

    BudgieMania,

    Yeah... A new store would need to have a handful of killer apps and significant feature superiority over Steam, all on release, just to have a chance at being a successful competitor. And it would probably need to maintain that momentum for a decent amount of time, and it would probably also need a fuckup on Valve's part.

    Freakin EA didn't achieve it, freakin Sony didn't bother trying it, Epic dropped a fuckton of cash just to barely move the needle. I can't imagine what it would take.

    Neato,
    @Neato@kbin.social avatar

    Well, maybe? A Steam competitor could try what Epic did and offer better deals. This time to publishers and players if they actually want customers. Or they could try to offer things Steam doesn't. Or they could just try for parity and see if it works? We haven't seen a platform with parity yet so maybe people would want a new option?

    SandLight,

    But if Amazon does it, it will be a rushed out steaming pile with half the features and twice the price, as is their custom.

    szczuroarturo,

    The thing is Amazon dosent exatcly need to be competetive.heck they could make it basicaly a Amazon prime semi-exclusive platform for games basicaly competing with xbox game pass instead of steam or with both of them at once

    Hadriscus,

    Obligatory xkcd

    Earthwormjim91,

    Could they be any less original?

    Their competitor to Steam is just… another word for Steam.

    drmoose,

    My guess it’s just an internal name to boost morale, inside joke sort of thing. Many software projects do that. Would be funny if that was the name though

    SgtAStrawberry,

    They already have one where the put most of the prime games called “Amazon Games App”. So if “Vapor” is something new it is more of another another launcher.

    If they however just update the game app to also be a store front, it be fine I guess. I’m not thrilled about everyone needing there own launcher, but Amazon already has one, so can’t really blame them for spicing it up a bit, to be at they other launchers level.

    pory,
    @pory@lemmy.world avatar

    Amazon already tried, with a Twitch branded game launcher and included game licenses for that platform in Amazon Prime.

    PeterPoopshit, (edited ) do games w Starfield Steam Deck performance report: a frontier too far

    As a die hard Windows hater that games (I haven’t had Windows installed on any pc I own since 2015) all of the AAA games always get absolutely dogshit performance when they first come out. It was like that with Cyberpunk and it was like that with Hogwarts Legacy. Today, those games play just as well on Windows as on Linux. I’m sure they’ll eventually work it out

    nanoUFO, (edited )
    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I remember seeing a video where they compared linux to windows starfield performance and it was basically the same on average fps but the 1% lows were less prevalent on linux so it might actually work better on linux.

    Ah here I found it www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC6fb889qo4

    PeterPoopshit, (edited )

    I bet it works fine on amd gpus right now. If you’re on a 10 series Nvidia card you’re fucked. If you’re on a newer Nvidia card it’s still kind of bad though but not every protondb report involving Nvidia 3xxx or 4xxx cards is complaining about performance. I suspect there exists some kind of performance fix for later Nvidia cards that is not yet well known.

    The latest driver is 537.13 I think. Most of the time they only bother to put every multiple of 5 driver version in Linux distro repositories. Someone that was familiar with how exactly the low level parts of this worked could manually get driver 537 working on Linux probably. No idea if that would work or not but I haven’t seen someone claim to have tried it yet.

    As someone playing on Linux desktop, yes. It’s fine*.

    *as fine as it can be, because it needs some general optimization

    Edit: and yes, I’m on AMD (it’s the obvious choice for Linux gaming; drivers are in the kernel)

    FrankTheHealer,

    To be fair, Cyberpunk’s performance was awful for everyone at launch, Windows, Linux and consoles.

    At one point I remember seeing someone on Reddit show that the game was less likely to crash on Linux than on Windows. In that regard, one could argue the performance was better for Linux users when Cyberpunk launched. Mind you, the games was still a buggy mess at launch too.

    circuitfarmer, (edited )
    @circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

    Cyberpunk’s performance was awful for everyone at launch, Windows, Linux and consoles.

    But it wasn’t? There were a lot of bugs, to be sure, but PC performance was not among them. Hell, I was on a 970 at the time, and it was still fine.

    The console versions specifically were a shit show.

    But in regards to running better on Linux, a lot of it tends to come down to shader precaching. Lots of stutters on Windows are the first time a shader loads. That was definitely the case with Elden Ring.

    mods aren’t for everyone but the Steam Deck Essentials mod boosted me like 10 fps in most areas and I’ve had a pretty good time

    HidingCat,

    This is hilarious, a mod released within a week of the game's launch boosts it by 10 FPS. Why can modders do it but not the dev team?

    PutangInaMo,

    Because they’re free and can be counted on.

    dyma,
    @dyma@lemmy.world avatar

    I’m gonna give the devs the benefit of the doubt and say maybe they don’t want to ship compressed textures by default since plenty of people will need them to play on ultra settings, but a modder can cater to the smaller, dedicated fanbase on the steam deck. but idk I’m not a dev

    moogs,

    Most likely because it makes the game look more potato than the Devs were willing to allow

    FrankTheHealer,

    What do you use to stream game pass games on Steam Deck?

    I have a ton of older games in my Xbox library that I’d love to play on Steam Deck

    Anyone else just getting to a point where, given the writing on the wall, they feel gaming sort of already peaked? Amazon gaming? Netflix gaming? Apple? Yeah. No thanks. None of those companies are game companies. All of their offerings are going to be excessively monetized. All of it is going to be about data gathering instead of engaging fun games. It’s going to be AI driven. Yuck. Good thing I still have Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 3 to play.
